This is the only job opening that would ever make me nervous about Elliott leaving Texas. Hopefully he is comfortable in Austin. The cost of living is way better in Austin. I doubt USC would increase Elliott’s salary at least 50% better than he receives in Austin. Both programs kind of pick and choose in volleyball for recruits, especially Texas. I think you’re safe but I guess you never know.

Swann made that incredible slo-mo catch in the Super Bowl, which probably wouldn't be so incredible if NFL Films didn't capture it in slo-mo and dramatize it with their heroic symphonic music.

And one other thing, while I'm ranting about this horse-s*** move:
If you're going to be an indecent prick and not allow Haley to make an announcement or at least be quoted in the press release, why on earth would you do it only hours before the national championship game on ESPN?
You're taking the disrespect of Haley and adding to it by crapping all over the title match.
Did Swann have an urgent tee-time he needed to make?

Dang, definitely a "statement" to do this on National Championship day. Is Haley in KC?

The question isn't whether this is a great job, but whether there's a really good viable candidate. USC likes to hire within the family, but can't think of any coaches with SC ties who are up to it (Weishoff and who else?). Have a hard time believing that they will land one of the established head coaches--McCutcheon, Elliott, Cook, and would be shocked if they consider Karch.

Wow. Shocking. I don't like the tone of that press release. I hope this was totally Haley's decision. The guy came just one or two lucky bounces from taking his team to the Finals. Read the vbmag article in another thread. Not his decision at all, and an age discrimination lawsuit was in the works even before this. His contract was up and he was told it wouldn't be renewed. The timing was such that he wasn't able to be the one to tell his players. The part where his players and recruits don’t get to hear it from him is really crappy. Sounds like he was at the convention when he found out. He was just win Lanier and Abercrombie at the AA banquet not 24 hours before this.

If Swann doesn't already have the replacement lined up and ready to announce by Monday, then this is an amateur move.
You don't fire a coach of Haley's stature unless you have a killer lined up and ready to go.

I'm absolutely shocked by this announcement. There is no way the resignation was voluntary, but possibly a case of terms that couldn't be agreed upon. My guess would be the length of contract Mick wanted vs what USC offered. I thought this team represented one of Micks best coaching jobs ever, and they were 1 swing away from a final 4 appearance. My hope is that SC has a head coach in mind, and the opportunity was now or never. I don't know the status of Karch's contract, or his interest level, but he would be my first choice. I wouldn't think he'd leave prior to the Olympics though. I don't know who else, but it is a highly desired position. My appreciation and best wishes to Coach H.

Thanks for the years of hard work and dedication, Mick! At 74, this is probably a good time to retire. I'm not sure if anyone is surprised.
Misty would be a great hire, but I don't think she wants it. She's LBC through and through and I can only see her leaving City College for Long Beach State.
Tyler Hildebrand, perhaps....?

You don't fire a coach of Haley's stature unless you have a killer lined up and ready to go. I think Haley is right that this was planned since last spring. If so, I agree they should have a big name coach lined up already. They may wait a little to pretend to go through a search process for legal reasons. Does CA have fair hiring restrictions regarding job postings for private universities?

I think Tyler is a great young coach, but handing him the USC job after just one year as AC in the women's game? It'd be a risky hire. That said, I do think he'll eventually be a fantastic head coach.

One of the best coaches in the country happens to lead a program in the city that Swann once called home.
