Sad the way this all went down, Hayley had a great run, but I’m still a believer that the Pac needs new blood to keep up with the Big 10. It is the right move, despite the execution. I heard rumblings that Owes was possibly wavering on her commitment, does this affect that? Others? That Miner recruit recently relocated to so cal and she has USC heritage, does this put her recruitment back in the toss up category? Does Macaa stay closer to home? Lots to consider here.

Wow. This is huge. You know, Mick Haley shouldn't have to be forced to "resign," he's a legend and still very successful. But, on the other hand, he sort of seems like a guy who would hang on until death's door, so they probably thought it best to bring in new blood before things really start to go downhill (assuming they would).
Anyway, yeah, I know USC isn't on Stanford, Nebraska, Texas, Penn St. level right now, but, it's still one of the very top programs and located in a true VB hotbed. This is a huge opening. I haven't read the rest of the thread yet, but I'm sure it's been suggested that McCutcheon fill this position. Of course USC has their pick of any number of top candidates.

Mick is going to do himself a disservice making this public. He may get the old guard VB community support, but claiming agism just smells like a white guy entitlement. If he felt this spring things were gonna change, then THIS year shouldn’t be a factor. All things considered I don’t really think you can look at the last 5 years of USC ball and see a program befitting of the USC name... drop outs, transfers up the wooza, a 15-15 record, not advancing to the final four despite hosting a regional. USC wants a better more consistent management of its VB program, if they feel Mick can’t deliver that to him he’s gotta go.

Sounds like he was at the convention when he found out. He was just win Lanier and Abercrombie at the AA banquet not 24 hours before this.
Does this look like a man (who has had his job for 17 years) know he is going to fired 12 hours after this picture was taken? yes he knew.. 12hrs...maybe not

Jason Mansfield? He's got more years as an assistant than Hildebrand, and most of it in the Pac-12.

What happened at that banquet? That's what Inquiring Minds want to know.

Regarding the age factor cmon people give usc some slack regardless of how poor the announcement came out Seriously some of you expect an ad to commit to having a 78 year old coach in 4 years? I mean can an entity not factor that in? Would it be any different if he was 84? If you think so then arent you then still discriminating because if age Why are you saying "expect an AD to commit to having a 78 year old coach in 4 years"? Was Haley asking for 4 years? Even at 84 years old, depending on the job description, contract and ability to do said job, then yes, it is ageist. That's sort of the point of age discrimination, it's not about a number it is about the ability to do the job. Dave Shoji is only a couple of years younger (and aside from his recent bout with cancer) is probably fitter and healthier than some coaches twenty years younger than him. Whether or not it was "time" for Haley to retire or not, the timing of the announcement was a completely disrespectful to Haley's legacy. Unfortunately, this "error in judgement" on the AD's part, may help contribute to an age discrimination case for Haley, especially since Haley coached his team to an elite level this season.

I am not totally surprised the U$C wants a change in their program. This is one of their premier teams and they expect to compete for national titles every years. Given their location and recruiting base that expectation isn't totally nuts. They probably felt rightly that they couldn't commit to Haley for another 5 years. The manner of the firing was probably driven by the lawyers. I am sure that U$C wanted a friendly parting of the ways and would have been willing to let Haley resign. But once Haley starts to threaten litigation then the lawyers take over. Haley has every right to sue. I have no idea if he was a case. But you can't both sue and expect a fond farewell. I think this make some sense. Maybe USC wanted Haley to leave, asked him to resign, and he refused. Can any of you think of a different way for that situation to play out?

I'm not familiar with this coach or AD, but unless it was for doing something particularly bad, this is really harsh. Sounds "personal" in a case like this. Again, this type of firing lends itself to potential lawsuits and payouts by the school. AD's who do this sort of thing deserve the same fate as those that they fire.

From a timing standpoint this is a huge PR disaster and a giant F-U to the AVCA Convention and the Finals. Based on the quotes from Haley in the VBMag article, it's clear there were problems. But, even if you can't figure out a way to fix whatever problems there are between a coach and people in the AD department, (which a good AD should be able to resolve), then you at least have the decency to NOT announce this hours before the championship match. That is just inexcusable. If this is the type of management and leadership USC is getting from their so called Athletic Director, then I feel very sorry for every person who works in or is associated with that department. This is a shameful way to handle the departure of any employee, much less an extremely successful head coach. Mick mentioned problems, but he naturally didn't mention the problems he caused. Exactly

The OP should change the thread title. Mick Haley did NOT resign. He was fired on the day of the national championship match while he was out of town. Disgraceful. No this news was spreading before the national championship. The press was released the day of the championship but he learned of it before. Must have been a few days before.
