Florida State: FSU saw a down year. Knuth, Ambrose, and Williams should do well on the offensive end. However, the loss of Kabura, Woie, and Calkins is going to hurt. Berkert and Tiejens will need to build chemistry with new players. DARK HORSE in the conference for 2018. AVCA High School All-American Adrian Ell will be coming off of a redshirt year to set with Burkert, which is expected to help a lot. Plus the addition of the transfers and two early high school grads that are all spending the spring with the team should help to build that chemistry

Doesn't pitt, last years co-champ, return al their significant parts? how can they not be the favorite? UNC returns several star players who were out due to injury last year and welcome in a strong recruiting class. UNC easily has the most talent on their roster and if healthy is another caliber above everyone else. Louisville is beginning to re-emerge also as they have a good recruiting class coming in a good core returning. Notre Dame can be lethal as well if they learn to have a spread out offense. I think that Pitt and UNC have he edge but I think that Notre Dame, Louisville, and FSU can contend.

I agree with your first 4, but IMO NC St. is going to be in the top 5 somewhere between 3 and 5. Yes they lose Bailey and Brown, but Evans was a stud and missed quite a few matches and played sparingly in tournament. If she is in line up full time next year NC State should be a threat every match. They also lose their top middle (Kearney) and the Libero (Harris). Not much in the way of serve return coming back. I am not sold on Florida State and I think Notre Dame isn't a given - so it is possible. I would say ... 1. UNC 2. Louisville 3. Pittsburg 4. NC State 5. FL State

Word out of Chapel Hill is that Joe is replacing both assistants. Any truth to that?

I wish them well and the program well, of course. My take is that both are a little bit out of the box. If this were 2007, Schall would be a prime candidate. He's been in the sport via high level club, but he hasn't coached college in 12 years. Most of Clements experience is at D2 and lower level D1. Both may turn out to be great fits and I hope they do. At the same time, it's not someone who's recently coached in a program that went deep into the tournament or who brought in a recent top ten recruiting class elsewhere. For the time being, the challenge isn't necessarily on the recruiting end, it'll be scouting opponents and training the team. Rebuilding the team's back row and continuing to develop the setters will likely be priorities.

I wonder if this new duo is in line?

ONe thing that I've noticed is that very few coaches are naming their successors these days. The one exception might be Dave Shojii. Other than that, Dunning didn't get to do it, Banachowski didn't, and Mick Haley most certainly didn't get to do it. Russ Rose hasn't retired yet, but that one also hasn't gone to form. Athletic Directors hire the volleyball coach. In any case, the coaches I mentioned won multiple national championships. Sagula's had a long very good run at UNC, but doesn't have that level of accomplishment in terms of national success.

Not sure how the NLI can be cancelled or a student can be released. I don’t know how that works. UNC success is now going to depend on the star freshmen class coming in since there are two big transfers.

I've heard another rumor at a tournament this weekend - that Va Tech is losing one of their big frosh OHs and an incoming setter? Anyone know who they could be? And how does an incoming player leave after the NLI but before they actually arrive on campus? They can leave if the school releases them from the NLI. Where is the incoming setter going?

Well there are only 2 OH from Last year. Losing either one will be a huge problem. Only 1 setter coming in that isn't on campus already and she is probably the better of the 2. No word where either are going or why. Could be another tough season for Va Tech. What's causing the departures? Really like Jill and rooting for her success!!
