www.idsnews.com/article/2018/02/mm-sportspodcast-02-01-18Aird and Vansant talk long term, current IU players, and which playing atmospheres they'd like to emulate with the building of the new arena. This is the first time I'm hearing Aird describe his vision and it has a very "millennial" ring to it. I wish him the absolute best because it'd be nice to cheer for more than 10 wins in a season. Regarding playing atmospheres, Vansant gives compliments and then says some other words about some big time programs, but out of deep respect, I'd assume.

In the podcast, Vansant is described as having been an "assistant" at UW - she was a "program assistant", not an assistant coach. An earlier article from IU said she "oversaw" recruiting - at most she might have made travel arrangements, but had no recruiting responsibilities, whatsoever, other than perhaps hosting the NLI-signees on their official campus visit. Did Aird hire her based on an inflated resume?
One thing that is clear is that Aird is using Vansant's sterling image as a player (but not as a coach) to divert attention from his own wounded image, after having disgracefully abandoned the players he'd "sold" on going to Maryland (many of whom are now transferring out). Why else even bring Vansant onto this podcast, as though she is "Jeff" to his "Mutt"?
While UW had a long article on Jonathan Winder leaving UW to take the Fresno State job, it hasn't released a "peep" about Vansant's departure. That could mean that the departure of a mere "program assistant", in their eyes, doesn't merit the attention, even though they recently hoisted her number into the rafters - or that some at UW are peeved about it. Some here were pushing for her to replace Winder at UW, although I thought the more realistic promotion for her was to be a volunteer or grad assistant. Was Aird's offer a pre-emptive strike against UW hiring her? Regardless, hard to blame her for jumping at the chance of being a full-fledged (not a volunteer/grad) assistant coach at a P5 program, when she has zero college coaching experience and very minimal experience at the club level. I just hope her image isn't ultimately sullied by Aird's crass "salesmanship" and "vision" mongering.

Are you going to spend this much time vilifying all coaches who leave earlier than you think they should or just Steve?

Is Vansant even a good coach? She had an excellent model in JMac (and he's just down the road, if she needs some advice). She should know the GM2 principles, methods, and techniques, which gives her a different knowledge-base than Aird got from Penn State. She knows how to run a "cauldron". She was an all-around player, so knows how to do more than just jump and hit. Her experience of being a coach, on any level, however, is virtually nil. She might be the most inexperienced P5 full-time assistant coach (not a volunteer or grad assistant) ever. Macey Gardner at least coached a year as an assistant at Liberty U before being hired by ASU. You've got to start somewhere - normally, however, that is not at a P5 conference. She's going to have a lot to learn. She is, however, a decent and honest person (which I'm not at all sure Aird is), so has a leg up in that regard...

Aird has to go to Indiana and turn that program into a tournament team within 3-5 years or his seat will warm up.

They have to worry that he's not in it for the long-term, but is only looking for a springboard to the next "lily pad". He left the job unfinished at Maryland, breaking all the promises he'd made. Why won't he do the same at Indiana?
