Every single coach that has ever left a school for another school has abandoned their players. Sorry Aird didn’t spend 40 years at Maryland and retire a Terp... Redbeard’s selective anger makes me wonder... can anyone list names of any big D1 coaches who has only ever stayed at one school their entire career without massive success aka a National Championship? Also based on a national championship, Mary wise lol.

I'm skeptical, not angry. "Vision" is his word. He sold two top-20 classes on his vision, then walked out the door, which makes that "vision" thing ring kind of hollow. Will he still be at Indiana four years from now? Time will tell. Lots and lots of coaches have been at their schools for more than four years.

Just a quick sampling of some coaches who have left their previous teams for what they thought might be better opportunities elsewhere:
John Cook – leaves Wisconsin for Nebraska Mick Haley – leaves Kellogg CC for Texas, leaves Texas for USA Volleyball – leaves for USC Mary Wise – leaves Iowa State for Kentucky, leaves Kentucky for Florida John Dunning – leaves Pacific for Stanford Jim McGlaughlin – leaves Washington for Notre Dame Kevin Hambly – leaves Illinois for Stanford
RedBeard Quotes: “Aird is using Vansant’s sterling image …to divert attention from his own wounded image after having disgracefully abandoned the players he’d sold… .” Calling Vansant “Jeff to his Mutt.” “I just hope her image isn’t ultimately sullied by Aird’s crass ‘salesmanship’ and ‘vision’ mongering.” Vansant is “a decent and honest person (which I’m not at all sure Aird is). “He left the job unfinished at Maryland, breaking all the promises he’d made.”
Volleyguy Quotes: “Aird doesn’t have a good reputation amongst a lot of people.” “Being better than the most horrendous people you’ve met in volleyball is hardly a ringing endorsement.” “…makes my reaction to him like that of a tourist who gets bumped and checks his pockets to see is he’s been robbed…I don’t think of that as transparent, but shady.”
And Aird is not even a "decent" guy? He's comparable to a guy who robs tourists? Leaving Maryland for what he believes is a better opportunity at IU is "disgraceful?" I'd love to hear your thoughts on all of these other elite coaches who similarly left their previous coaching jobs for what they believed were better opportunities!!! That Mary Wise and that John Cook - as shady and indecent as they come...

The difference between Aird and the other examples you cited is that there's a lot bigger sense that Aird is leaving before the job was done. He didn't even get Maryland into the tournament before bailing for another Big Ten bottom dweller. All the other examples you cited left successful programs.

I'm just relaying my honest impression, nothing more, although I've also included reservations ("not at all sure", "I just hope", etc.). I also posted earlier that a possible mitigating factor might have been if Maryland had dragged its feet on promised facility improvements - not a one has spoken up to confirm that however.
As far as I'm concerned, he does have the air of someone selling vacuum cleaners, aluminum siding, or used cars. I'm not at all sure I'd buy a pair of shoes from him.

Indiana did make a better commitment on program support, salaries, and contract length. And iu does have its new full facility while Maryland has a renovated locker room. I'm not surprised any coach would move given those differences.

Im a penn state fan and I don’t really care for the guy. I would never want him as the head coach there.

Ask yourself why would someone be so angry because he left Maryland except a Terp fan, who wanted him to stay. Indiana is on its way back to competitive VB. As a PSU fan you should be worried they don't beat your team in the future.

Crouch left Portland after three years. Where’s the outrage or suspicion? Mendoza left High Point after two years. Schumacher-Cawley left Penn after one. Don’t see any posts suspicious of either.
Gosh, I wonder why...?

Gosh, I wonder why...? Really? Portland --> USC High Point --> South Carolina Penn --> Penn State Maryland --> Indiana One of these things is not like the others.

I hope I'm not so bitter and make personal attacks against Aird when/if he would ever leave Indiana for Penn State - who could actually ever blame him if he did that? And Maryland to IU is not as equal as some think - brand new facility, sweet 16 some years back, firm commitment to volleyball, and a huge salary raise (even if he is making the same as he did at Maryland, it will go so much further in Bloomington). Maryland was atrocious before Aird, which a lot of folks seem to conveniently forget.

Regarding IU's storied NCAA history, 3 trips - 1999, 2002 and 2010. Maryland has been to the tourney 7 times since 1990 (6-7 overall). Also, Maryland was not atrocious until Kruger left after the 2007 season (8 20+ win seasons in her 20 years), IU with the exception of a couple of season has been "consistent".

Maryland was atrocious before Aird, which a lot of folks seem to conveniently forget. They were? Here's Maryland's RPI over the past 10 years. (Technically their RKPI because that was easier to look up) === Tim Horsmon === 2008 -- 201 2009 -- 177 2010 -- 74 2011 -- 168 2012 -- 91 2013 -- 134 === Steve Aird === 2014 -- 150 2015 -- 100 2016 -- 141 2017 -- 51 Aird made them better. But the difference between the two coaches' results has been overstated in my opinion.
