www.tampabay.com/pro-beach-volleyball-players-from-around-world-form-union-ap_sports10f903409bd64ce98c593893c59de40fNearly 100 professional beach volleyball players from around the world have formed a union they hope will give them a greater voice in how the sport is run. The roster includes many of the sport's top names and gold medalists from each of the last four Olympics. In a news release scheduled for Tuesday, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press on Monday, the players say their goals are to grow the sport so professionals can earn a stable living. The statement complains of canceled tournaments, cuts in prize money and rule changes not vetted by the competitors. The International Beach Volleyball Players Association includes six of the eight Americans from the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Three-time Olympian Phil Dalhausser, who won gold in Beijing in 2008, is its honorary president. Officials from the International Volleyball Federation and the domestic American tour did not immediately respond to messages.

It does seam silly with this weekends tournament as an example, that the winners will did not cover their expenses. I'm not sure how a union will fix this but the term 'professional' when used with "pro beach volleyball player" only means they play for money not necessarily that they can live off what they earn.

Phil is honarary president. Go Phil!
Saw a post of Anouk and Madeline in Netherlands discussing about this IBVPA and Kerri commented to ask if she could call them the day after but Anouk was leaving the next day.
Not really sure how this will help prize money. A big sponsor wil help a lot though.

I imagine different countries have different labor laws when it comes to unions. I’m also curious about Donald Sun’s response. Will he blacklist its American members or threaten to shut down the AVP again? Or is he supportive of this new association?

There is a full list at www.ibvpa.comCasey is in along with Nick and Lauren. Brooke and Jake are not. Emily and Brittany are the other Americans listed as members. Also MHP, Chaim, and Brandie from Canada but not Sarah Pavan.

Well, I think the need a voice, heard grumblings of some issues but they didn't come clear out and say what their issues were.
be interesting how this relates to domestic tours.

I would assume this is FIVB only as the players have already signed the AVP 4 year contract. I mean the sport has never been profitable beyond the "big sponsor" era from what I've read so attracting sponsors would probably be more fruitful than an association of players (though that is what AVP means, literally)...An association of "what, one might ask". Players wanting sponsors which, the union, might be counter productive to? Before you solve a problem, you have to define it and I've heard the talk of "models", etc., but NOW we have another example of a model (the current "FIVB version") that is joining the ranks of the "not working" ones we have seen. Since the players are not of NFL/NBA/NLB "means", none will probably be buying the FIVB tour, which leads us to "what is their problem"? Lack of a big name sponsor or building the game, along the lines of what the AVP is attempting, which, in the current model, would increase the event size each year (and thus the ability to charge for stuff: VIP seats, etc.) and hopefully stops. At this point, after the AVP 2017 season, that is believable and "in sight". You only had to attend one stop to understand that. I think sponsorship is the easiest route, but with the turmoil in the sport, brands probably don't want to associate with a "brand in ruin/evolution". I can't imagine a company not wanting to market our game/players/lifestyle with access to players/photos/video for their marketing dept., but as they say, if it were so easy, everybody would be doing it...Well, we'll have to see where this one goes, but evidently the FIVB sponsor pool ain't what it used to be...
