This isn't going to be a no-pressure cakewalk for Hildebrand, believe me. And his travel schedule won't be any picnic, either.

Sorry, this confuses me. How is their “little pressure of expectations” for the USA beach program? It’s one of the most watched and most attended sport at every Olympics, and it’s the most visible and marketed discipline of our sport. Hasn’t the US won the men’s and/or women’s Olympic gold medal in every Games except Rio? Yes, but that visibility is intermittent. The casual fan doesn't care about beach volleyball except for a couple weeks every four years. Plus, Tyler's position isn't tied to revenue generation. People could say the same about Karch, but he's in absolutely no jeopardy of being replaced. USA could fail to medal at indoor at the Tokyo Olympics and Karch would still be the coach in 2024 if he wanted it. I understand what you are suggesting, and I agree there is not much in the way of pressure for 2020, but a poor showing (failing to medal) might change that dynamic considerably.

Nope, being a mother will decide for her. I know mothers with young children who prioritize travelling internationally at least once a year, with or without their kid. Just because you become a mother, doesn't mean you have to give up your interests. Kristen has made numerous friends in her 10 years of playing overseas - when they sold their house on Instagram, she specifically called out the memory of hosting her Brazilian and Korean friends for Thanksgiving. I'm not saying this is definitely the primary reason but SoCal is 1) much easier to travel from and 2) much easier to travel to. She will also be much closer to her Stanford/USAV friends. I think it's pretty easy to guess which way she would vote (between beach job and AC job) if Tyler asked for her opinion. Where did I suggest that she would give up her interests? I said that she's not going to be globetrotting. Traveling internationally once a year is considered globetrotting? Whether people want to admit it or not, people and priorities change when having kids (maybe not for absentee parents). I'm guessing Kristin is a good parent and will probably be spending most of her days taking care of her son, at least for awhile.

Nebraska has a hard time keeping assistants. Cook's goal is clearly not to keep assistants; but rather to develop them into more. I think a more accurate description would be, "Nebraska has an easy time developing assistants who move onto better things." Why is it easy? GO HUSKERS

I also never said that any of those mothers considered themselves globetrotters. Seeing as Kristen herself still has "globetrotter" in her instagram bio and she's very instagram-active, I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt and 1) assume she still wants to travel internationally frequently and 2) would like to stay close with her many international friends she made the last 10 years. Again, Lincoln is going to be a very difficult place to travel internationally from and also, a difficult place to get to for Koreans, Brazilians, Turks, etc. Additionally, Lincoln is also going to be an adjustment after spending a decade in Russia, Italy, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Poland and Turkey. REGARDLESS, my main point is I think most would agree Kristin probably prefers SoCal to Lincoln. You've yet to provide any evidence, analysis or speculation that argues otherwise.

Easy to be a globetrotter when: You have no kids. The team you’re playing for foots the bill. You have 2 incomes.

www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=211701760 Congratulations to Tyler. Clearly, John Cook had a knack for finding and developing not only volleyball players but also volleyball coaches. In addition to Hildebrand, the previous 2 assistants, Chris Tamas and Dani Bussboom Kelly also moved on to stellar results as head coaches. Tamas to Illinois and a Sweet Sixteen appearance, and Kelly at Louisville with a league championship and the NCAA playoffs. So if you're an AC looking for a spring board to a great HC position, looks like working for John Cook at Nebraska is the place to go. seriously, giving Cook credit for this goes a little far - it was one year probably give Knipe credit for this as much as Cook having a former Men's national team coach and WVB national championship coach in one's corner can't hurt and a winter in Nebraska certainly could have been a factor

I am disappointed in him after his speech about staying. So much for that. Me too.

Nebraska not only trains volleyball players they also trains assistant coaches for head coaching jobs. How much "training" does Cook really do. It seems to me that he is able to hire the top assistant coaches because he has more money to offer than most other schools. Then, when those coaches inevitably move to head coaching positions, he takes credit for their development (or at least, VT posters give him credit).

Then, when those coaches inevitably move to head coaching positions, he takes credit for their development (or at least, VT posters give him credit). He actually prioritizes the training and development of his assistants into head coaches. Sure, he's usually hiring good coaches from the start, but he really pushes their ownership and accountability over all aspects of the program. When interviewing candidates he asks for a three year commitment and tells them that they should be looking for head coaching jobs after that. Not many coaches hire someone and tells them to start planning their exit strategy the second they walk in the door. Not many high level coaches spend time developing their assistants' thought processes and organizational leadership. Most high level coaches use the "watch me and learn" style. For example, with Kayla he could've said, "Since you're going to be the recruiting coordinator and have zero experience at it, let me tell you how I do it and why it's successful." Instead, he basically said, "You're the recruiting coordinator, figure it out and tell us what you want us to do to support your vision." Obviously, he will step in and course correct if needed, but he wants his assistants acting like they're already running the show.
