Heard they might get another transfer that’s basically on Luyties level so sandbows might not lose a beat. Not sure if she is the transfer you are referring to but Kristen Abels will be transferring in to play from Utah I am not sure Kristen Abels (if that who this possible transfer is) is on the same level of Luyties. Luyties is quite good and could start on a lot of programs. Big gain for the Cal Bears who already return 8 out of 10 starters. It's difficult to say if Abels is better than some of the defensive players we already have? I hope she can add to the team though, if not in 2019 beyond that. Where did Abels play last season? I know she played indoor for the Utes in 2017. It would be nice to get a few more "big" indoor transfers (like Scoles). I think we need one more impact "Bigs". I know Florida State and several other schools brought on graduate students who made an impact within one year for their respective teams (some with beach experience and some without). What good indoor players (either from last year or one who will end their indoor this year) are out there and worth going after? Who would you want? I have heard we may lose an impact player. I not sure if it is confirmed so I won't say anything but it may surprise some (I hope I am wrong!!). We may also gain an impact player - that will leave us at the same level regardless. If we don't lose an impact player than we'd probably be in a good position for next season. Also, it's a possibility Castillo and Gaskin could play beach after their indoor career ends. It's possible Castillo could challenge for one of the top flights if she comes in (she was close in 2017 and probably improved in overall fitness and skills since then). I think UH will be okay, but I am not sure they will challenge for a Top 3 finish - it just depends on a player here or there. We lost a lot of talent last year! We may not have the depth at the lower flights.

They should expand the flights to 7 considering the total number of players in any team. Make it best of 7. It should not be that hard because theyre only playing 3 sets (2 of 21 and 15 on third). It would also make it easier for the big schools to stockpile talent, which is what I don't think they want to do. The format change I would make would be all 5 flights play one game against all the other 5 teams and we forget about the flight rankings. (So 25 total games, need 13 to win)

IIRC, the original thinking was 3 teams is too small (not enough opportunities for athletes to participate to make it worthwhile), while 7 was too big. You would need a minimum of 14 players (realistically, 16 or so), and that would make it bigger than a lot of indoor teams. That was considered too big a threshold. Now that the sport is more or less established, you could consider going to 7 teams, but it still seems unlikely to me.

Agree with getting rid of the rankings, what about have the home team present the first team and then let the visiting team counters, then the visiting team presents a team and the home team counters?

Lea Monkhouse has left Hawai'i, destination unknown at this point. This is a huge loss for the program. She had a year as a freshman. Good luck to wherever she goes.

Very unfortunate but to be honest, I was not surprised. I don't think she liked Hawaii. She never seems to be happy here. Homesick maybe? I think Hall tried his best by putting her with one of the best we had and hope she will find some happiness but I guess if she doesn't fit in, then maybe its best she go else where and find her happiness.
With her lost, we will lose a big part of the top end of the flights. Hopefully, the redshirts and those coming in can pick up the slack.
Would like to see Julia Scoles come in and surprise the heck out of everybody and pull a Carly Kan and make the flights her first year here. Kylin Loker will be given a long look and Pani Napolean will also be counted on to replace those who left.
Currently, we have 11 returning from last season and 5 supposedly coming in with Loker, Sofia Russo, Lauren White, Julia Scoles and Kristen Abels. That is a pretty decent roster but the following year we will have 6 coming in so the massive losses this year will be made up in two years.

So, the word is out! She was the impact player I was referring to that was out, but we still should have an impact player as good or better than her for next season. As a result, the team will still be in the same position it was with Monkhouse. I was hoping for that slight chance we would have both of them for next season...which is too bad!
Yea, I would say Hawaii was never quite Lea's place. I wish she would have stuck it out for another season, but...I too am hoping Julia can become an impact player. The one difference with Carly Kan, however, is that she had prior beach experience though it was downplayed by the media. Julia is new to the beach. However, there have been several successful grad students that made an impact for their respective teams in one year's time. Julia will be the same (though not a grad student). I still hope the coaches are working on a good indoor transfer preferably with prior beach experience.
I think Monkhouse could end up at FSU. It's closer to home for her and her former partner, Molly McBain is there.

One of FSU's bottom flight players transferred out so Monkhouse could fill in perfectly for them and improve their team. So sad to see her leave though. As for Scoles, she does have beach experience playing in summer tournaments in North Carolina but of course it is not the competition she will see collegiately. Since arriving in Hawaii she has been training really hard with some local strength and beach coaches. She played in Outrigger Tournament where she partnered with Ava Poppinga (FSU) and plays at Queen's now and then. I'm impressed with her dedication to the sport and love that she is enjoying Hawaii and getting along well with her teammates. When fall camp starts up, I can definitely seeing her rising to one of the top flights. Hope we can add a few players to ease the losses from graduation and transfers.

Hall wouldn’t give Monkhouse a release, so she won’t be playing at FSU or any other school next season. As things currently stand, at any rate.

Damn if thats true he sux Why do you say that? What if the situation was not handled properly or professionally by Monkhouse? What if Lea gave Hall some BS on her way out? Should Hall just let that kind of behavior go? There have go to be some kind of bad blood between the two of them. Chloe Luyties and Sydney Kidd requested transfers and were given their releases and could play elsewhere.

In HS, she played volleyball, was an All State basketball player and was a two time state champion in long jump and high jump. With that kind of athletic talent, you know she is not afraid to work hard. I think she will blossom into a very good beach players. She got tons of physical skills. Just got to learn the game better.

I don't know that it is any different than any of the higher tiered programs. Kidd wasn't going to crack the line-up, Luyties did not crack the line-up for two years (I believe she would have this year but it wasn't guaranteed. She will likely see playing time at Cal). It's tough with the big rosters that many teams are carrying. The girls need to step up in order to see competitive action. Otherwise, transfers are bound to happen.
Monkhouse is an unfortunate loss, however, but my understanding is Hawaii never really suited her. She was given the opportunity to play with a good partner and receive playing time at one of the top flights. She could have been in the top flights for three more years.
Rogers just picked up Crissy Jones from Washington for next season. I hope Hawaii can land a grad student or transfer!
