Texas is still loaded even if they are mightily thin on the pins. A lineup I'd love to see is:
S-Shook, hopefully she can improve her location and consistency. I would not be the least bit surprised to see a big jump in her play next season.
OH-White, this is a given. Texas will need her to be much better from the service line and in serve receive. She also needs to develop more variety in her shots instead of going hard cross so much.
OH-Yazzie, another given. She looks more comfortable on the left than the right IMO. Maybe she'll shine now that she isn't going to be competing against PPC or Sun on the left. She's proven to be a super clutch player in big games, but can she bring that level of play and intensity on a game to game basis? Hasn't been the case her first few years, it remains to be seen.
RS-Butler, I'll be surprised if she goes here...but after watching footage of her in nationals in HS, the girl is downright beastly on the pins. She has Hooker/Alhassan like athleticism and can absolutely sky over the block and just hammer the ball. I think she'd be great on the right because can be a shutdown blocker and will get more reps there than she will in the middle. From the USA Jr. team footage, her blocking footwork and lateral speed closing the pins left a lot to be desired. I think this is easily fixed with more reps and practice, but honestly I think she'd be a great RS for this team. She'll be on the court somewhere.
MB-Johnson, as a senior she's not going to be beat out for her spot. Good attacker in front of and behind the setter. I think with more reps she'll flourish next season. Outstanding blocker and good court presence.
MB-O'Neal...haven't seen a ton of her, but as the #2 recruit in the country, I have a hard time seeing her get benched.
L-Roundsaville...this is where it gets somewhat scary for Texas. They really have no quality depth in the backcourt. Autumn did not have a good sophomore season but was terrific toward the end of her freshman year. This past year she was inconsistent defensively, terrible from the service line and just didn't really add much to Texas's backrow. I think she will make some improvements in the off season and should be the early front runner for libero.
DS-Hahn...another player with a similar year to Roundsaville. Really poor effort from the service line and inconsistent in the backcourt. Had some good matches (namely @ Kansas) but if Texas wants to be a top 5 team, they'll need much better production from her this year.
Backups:
MB/OH-Agbaji...Unfortunately I don't see where Orie fits in. She's a good athlete and can be a solid blocker, but I haven't seen anything from her offensively that indicates she'll be starter material. From what I saw her freshman year and in limited reps as a sophomore, it appears she doesn't have a great connection with her setters and still looked very raw offensively. Maybe next year she makes the jump--she was highly rated out of HS and won a best MB or best blocker award with the national team, so maybe this year is the year.
MB-Westerlund....nice player, good team spirit, but I don't see her every logging meaningful minutes at Texas.
S-Fisbeck...I don't see her beating out Shook...the fact that Elliot stuck with Ashley even when she really struggled says a lot.
S/DS Gabriel....it is asking a lot for a setter to come in and play DS for a high level program. Haven't seen enough of her defensively to say if she'll be able to compete with or beat out Hahn/Roundsaville. People had high hopes for Zelon and look how that turned out. I will say, from the footage I've seen of Jhenna, I am quite impressed with her setting ability. Seems to set both pins well and has good control and tempo.
DS Petersen....I like her accolades and am hopeful she can come in and make an impact early on. Again, it's asking a lot for a freshman to adjust to the college level and take over a libero spot from day 1, but we'll see what happens.
