Watched a show called “Silencing Patton”. Pretty much blames the Cold War on Eisenhower and his policy to suck up to Stalin. Example: Eisenhower told Patton to let Russia take Berlin and Prague. It was definitely pro Patton, anti Eisenhower (and Montgomery). Inspires me to read more about Patton

The Soviets took over 500,000 casualties taking Berlin. And considering that the Soviets owed the Germans some serious payback, it was best to let them have the glory of driving a stake through Naziism's heart. I'm not a big Montgomery fan, but I think keeping the US out of the Battle for Berlin saved a lot of American lives.

I'm sure we would have. I'm not condoning what the Soviets did to the German population. But I am condoning that we didn't suffer casualties taking Berlin. My father was in Patton's 3rd Army. He was OK ending the war in western Czechoslovakia as opposed to fighting to take Berlin.
While it's not an excuse, what the Nazis did to the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa might explain why the Sovets behaved so savagely. Recently, I came across a comment from a Soviet soldier who participated in conquering Germany; when he saw how much Germans "had," and how rich Germany was, he couldn't understand why the Germans felt compelled to attack the Soviet Union.

Wow-bet your dad has some stories! And horrible memories. Would be interesting to know how different the world have been if Patton had been in charge. Or if Japan hadn’t bombed Pearl Harbor. We may have never even entered the war. My trip a few months ago to Normandy and Berlin was awesome. Love WWII history.

There was a STRONG movement in America to stay out of the war. That's why "America First" was considered a really tone deaf campaign slogan.

While the whopping 6 million Jews killed in Europe were most likely dispatched with more despicable and ruthless intent than any other civilian group during the war, that figure pales in comparison to not one, but two others.
Current estimates suggest that the civilian death toll for the Soviet Union was about 13 million and that the civilian death toll for the Chinese (at the hands of the Japanese) was about 14 million.
If you really want to get depressed about Humanity look up the Taiping Rebellion.

Not to minimize the Nazi's efforts, but a third to one half of the Jews exterminated, were also residents of the Soviet Union. The Japanese... MacArthur protected them from the payback they deserved.

Of course, they did get atom bombed not once but twice. Although the Japanese only decided to surrender when they heard the Soviets abrogated the Japanese-Soviet Non Aggression Pact by attacking the Japanese troops in Manchuria. Only then did they realized the game was up. But you are correct on the larger point. It is true MacArthur did instituted some major reforms on Japan (i.e. liberalizing certain sectors of society such as political democratization, legalization of trade unions and protection of workers with basic working conditions etc), giving Japan a strong pacifist outlook in the post-war period (although that is starting to shift today). However, some of the Japanese war criminals got off scot-free. The purging of Japanese militarists and ultranationalists were only superficial in many respects, as many of the same men responsible for the Japanese war machine became responsible for post-war Japan development. The start of the Cold War and the Korean War meant the Americans' priorities shifted from demilitarizing Japan to ensuring Japan was a reliable ally against the Soviet menace. Japanese atrocities during World War 2, especially acts committed against Koreans, Chinese and other Asians, if not outright ignored, were downplayed and deemphasized. Article 9 of the post-war Japanese constitution, which forbade Japan from using military action to settle disputes or even having an armed force, was interpreted in a very vague fashion in practice, with the establishment of the Japanese Self-Defence Force, the military of post-war Japan in all but name.
