Brendin Chandler was on the Balboa 18 team that qualified for BJNC so two teams are going to lose 2 players.
What are the chances a player is told he isn't going to make the travel team in the first week of training and the player plays at bjnc?

I wouldn't count Balboa 18 out even after losing two players. Chalmers and Pender have shown be a great combo of outsides for Newport Harbor leading NH to an undefeated season.
Balboa's only loss at the SCVA Junior Boys Invitational was to MB Surf who won it. Balboa lost 30-21,31-29, 19-21.

Sheward has been setting that team for years. Not having Steele there will give Nick Alacano (sp?) more PT. Smaller block but a nice quick lefty offensively. Balboa has depth. This impacts SMBC Pali way more.

So if I’m reading this right...
There’s a kid with decent chance of being on the USA Junior National Team and he’s not even a starter for his club team?
God damn Balboa Bay is way too good of a club.

Chandler just joined Balboa this past fall when his Bones team all went elsewhere. Sheward has been setting for that Balboa team forever. I don’t think there was ever any question that he would continue in that starting role regardless of who joined the team.

Or is USA volleyball not selecting top of the class candidates? Last year the best setters in the youth age group were the smaller setters ... Garrett Zoig, Blake Crisp, Chris Hall... yet USA also feels compelled to include “less accomplished” setters Chris David, Chandler... who are part of the 6’5 club. Not only are these taller setters not as good from a technique, delivery tempo, location, foot speed, agility, athleticism, creativity, leadership, read, defensive perspective, I would argue they aren’t necessarily as good at blocking either! USA, like father Speraw, loves height despite deficiencies that may exist. USA is USA. Height above all else. Chris Hall did set for the Youth National Team last year. He started.

I see nothing wrong with USA taking chances on height, which apparently that can’t be taught. But with top level and coaching and strength program everything else you listed can be improved upon. That being said, I don’t know if Chandler is the guy to do that with. PS: “father Speraw” played small ball for half of the season this year before moving Hatch to libero. With the Hatch/Missry/Hess pin combo, that had to be about as small as it got in the MPSF or Big West. Know he sat for a variety of reasons, but Arnitz was able to be fresh for the end of the season. I’m assuming you and/or your kids might be considered undersized volleyball players?

I know he was just an example but Garrett Zolg is too old for the junior team despite being in the freshman class. He definitely would’ve made it if he could’ve.

These teams are not always the best players by position - many players use the summer to workout, heal, play beach/grass, etc and don't even try out for these teams

Anyone in particular you are referring to?

But the kids on this list are the top players. Jaylen Jasper, Johnny Bowles, Sam Lewis, Kyler Presho, Kevin Lamp...? Pretty elite to me. Again most of the players on these teams are either the top level recruits or top college freshmen.
