Village, why do you seem hell-bent on getting this locked? I am hoping the mod will just delete and block offensive posters. Then a healthy discussion can continue on what to do about this man’s continued presence in volleyball and how to make sure the same type of behavior doesn’t go unchecked again. Because it really is a travesty that this man continued to make his livelihood from a sport where he was sexually abusive to several of his young adult female players.

How many SPRI customers (parents paying for their daughters to play) don't even know of RB's past and allegations? I asked a former SPVB player this exact question. It was her experience that EVERYBODY knew (at least the high school aged girls). And this was before the most recent few years of media coverage.

Are you testing me? Mods always win. I made no mention of mods in my post on page one that you just responded to. Every Butler thread I've seen in the past two years seems to have gotten locked. You guys lock it when it gets out of hand. Using history as an example, I predict this one does too. This has nothing to do with mods, but posters who can't control their own conversation. I'm not sure what you're trying to win here. They've always been justly locked, which would be the mods winning. Leaving them as is with sadistic comments would be bad for VT and the mods losing. You seem to think I'm out to get you for some reason. The Mods don't win anything when adults act like children and threads are locked. We don't have to lock threads, we can just delete sadistic comments and ban the members who post them. I don't think you're out to get me but there is a reason why I'm monitoring your posts more closely than others.

Why do you think I'm hell-bent on getting this locked? You go out of your way to antagonize people

Now that everyone has seen and digested the $500MM settlement and understands that settlement means no appeal, that MSU had to agree to pay that amount, I think it should become clear that the case against RB is serious and could take everything from him and his family. Some here questioned why it would be filed. The simple answer is that the lawyer is going to get 40% of any settlement and SPRI likely has a fat insurance policy that will pay and settle first, and then they will go after all the butlers' assets.
I posted in another thread a while ago that Butler was stupid to keep this going and not walk away especially after the metoo movement and the latest press he had been getting. I believe he will regret this for the rest of his life. He will spend his dying years fighting this lawsuit and if (when) he loses, he will retire broke.

This is an honest question. And if this has been asked my apologies. So obviously RB and what he did is an absolute tragedy. It disgusts me to even think about it. How does one feel if the head coach of their favored program has a working relationship with him? Does camps or clinics? Goes INTO the gym to recruit those kids. I bring this up simply bc I don’t understand. I love this program and coach and don’t mind if said coach is in contact with him or his wife but RB should be put on an island? So they can recruit the kids and for the sake of winning sell their moral character? I’m sure there are coaches who won’t recruit those kids bc they morally feel ill about it. Idk.... I’d love some insight. It is a matter of your personal morality. And it is a difficult question to answer and it can only be answered personally. In effect the question is: what are you willing to stand for? We Americans are very pragmatic, hence we have our own brand of philosophy, pragmatism. We tend to think in terms of benefits and damage. Who or what is being damaged if I made this decision, who or what is benefiting. This is the exact tenor of the discussion here. During the Penn State scandal, many people early on made a case that Joe Pa did what he was required to do, that he performed his duties as prescribed by the limits of his legal obligation. He reported the incidence and to these people, that should have been the extent of his responsibility. Some didn't like that response because they felt that as someone who proselytizes to the college football fraternity on doing the right thing, he did not live up to what he promised. And that debate will continue ad infinitum. I personally feel that we need to live our beliefs, that we need to make a personal stand as per our convictions. And that includes disassociating with what we know is wrong. Not for the reason of self aggrandizement or being holier than thou, but to be able to say that I am true to my beliefs, despite the practical costs it may incur on me. Boy that actually makes a lot more sense to me. I’m absolutely in the camp of as you said “true to my beliefs, despite the practical costs it may incur on me.” I guess now that I really understand both sides. Where are the college coaches? Wouldn’t it take the most powerful ones to say morally I don’t condone this behavior, therefore I cannot be in touch with, do camps for or be in the SP gym? So can’t they make that statement and look into contacting those athletes high school coaches? Aren’t there other ways around SP? In no way am I saying he athlete shouldn’t be recruited but I feel like (as someone stated earlier) take the butlers out of the equation then coaches are not supporting someone who did awful things. My whole point to me asking questions is to find a consensus as to what’s missing here. I find a lot of opinions and emotions but not a lot of solutions coming from coaches. They wield power don’t they?

Not a defense, an explanation for chalktalk. There is no defense for a coach having such inappropriate relationships with players. However the college coaches, current and recent players, and former players and parents from 25 years ago know much more about the past and current situation than is discussed here. The very inappropriate relationships have some interesting facets. But when someone asks about it, I point out it's really irrelevant, the coach failed the player and started this whole chain of events which has gone on for years. The players, parents, and coaches know the essential details and also have first-hand knowledge of the program and the Butlers. Unless you have had the opportunity to accumulate some knowledge beyond volleytalk, you're at a big disadvantage. I can see why you would not understand why the program is held in such high esteem, but those who are close to it, unfortunately can't understand vtalkers. I point out that it's because you really care about the girls. Some reply that it's been the best and safest club for years. No Defense--just explaining the situation.

Hey, Village, I asked you first. No deflecting by turning the tables and asking me. So pray tell, why are you trying to shut down this conversation? We need to fix this. I don’t want this to ever happen again to another young volleyball player—male or female—gymnast, swimmer, tae kwando practitioner, you name it. We need to take care of young people. It is our duty. Hope you are with me in this endeavor.

You(!) are speaking about nonsensicality? EVERY time people state what they feel you are doing, you evade, deflect and avoid copping to what that is: distracting from the thread-topic, AND trying to get all attention upon yourself: it's all about vi. Your self-anointed, self-positioned (plus self-delusional) halo-areole does NOT quite fit you: demented, self-proclaimed coach!
