So, since USAV isn't posting detailed stats for their matches anymore (didn't last summer either), I decided to channel my inner joetrinsey and post a bare bones version here for fans. Should help give a little insight while we continue to spew crap about the team for the next month. He also made a good point about the inaccuracy and variability of FIVB stats.
Couple notes:
Anyway, these aren't meant to be perfect or anything. Just for the fans. If you see a mistake, lemme know. If you want me to include something that I don't have a column for, lemme know and I'll see what I can do.
Couple notes:
- I'm human, so consider that it's entirely possible that these aren't 100% accurate before you drag me. They're pretty good though. My data validation rules don't allow for too many mistakes when recording contacts. I don't have the DataVolley software anymore, so this is the best I can do.
- These stats reflect how I've always statted matches, so your definitions for things might be a little different than mine. That's okay because, overall, we aren't going to differ too significantly.
- Traditional boxscore rules like "team service aces should equal opponent reception errors" or "team serve attempts minus errors should equal opponent receive attempts" aren't going to apply in every case because of how I record contacts in different situations. For example, I record overpasses that result in a swing for the opponent as a reception error, even though there's no ace. Balls that are downballed over in desperation aren't "attacks" IMO either, and can't be "dug." Doesn't give a good picture of the actual offense.
- Reception numbers are percentages, not on a 3- or 4-point scale. I think percentages are naturally more intuitive than trying to figure out how much better a 2.17 is than a 2.03 and what that means in the context of scoring over the course of a match. There are also two differentiations: positive or negative. The pass either puts the team in a good position to score, or it doesn't. Positive passes are further categorized as 1) just good or 2) excellent/perfect. Similarly, negative passes are either 1) simply not great or 2) errors/overpasses. Reception numbers will also only include receptions off serves, not freeballs or downballs or anything.
- I tend to have a broad definition for "excellent" or "perfect" passes. I don't subscribe to any of the silly, common rules regarding good/bad passes, like it depending on the number of options/hitters that a setter has. Generally though, anything that the setter is taking above her head in the middle third-ish of the court within two meters of the net is "excellent/perfect," in my opinion.
Anyway, these aren't meant to be perfect or anything. Just for the fans. If you see a mistake, lemme know. If you want me to include something that I don't have a column for, lemme know and I'll see what I can do.
