Hey folks! New to the board and have a quick question for all of you? What do you think is Speraw's strongest starting line-up is for the VNL? Also how does everyone feel about Anderson switching back and forth from Opposite to Outside? We are entering the last two weeks and these last two pools are really loaded for Team USA with Poland/Iran/Serbia next week in Illinois and Italy/Russia/France in Modena in Wk 5. Just curious what everyone thinks? Thanks!

Our strongest starter is what we have been using all these years.
Patch is good but his streakiness will show in matches and we won't have anyone other than Anderson who is another OH who can have moments of streakiness and is already old. Our OH line up is full that if one of the OHs shows inconsistency someone will take over.
If Patch shows inconsistency, who would take his place when Anderson is playing OH? NO ONE!

Setter - Micah OH - Matt/Taylor Opp - Ben Middles - Max/Jeff Libero - Erik
I only like this a little better because Jendryk is a jump float server and Smith is a spike server and I know Speraw likes his guys to spike serve.....only right now in this VNL they are not nailing those serves and are making more errors than usual. Russell also used to jump float along with Lee in the previous quad and that seemed to work just fine. I like the aggressive serves but only when they can make them land more often.
Also I like seeing Torey Defalco get some court time. I do wish that Ensing would also get some playing time in too but I know Patch is getting much needed experience at this level.
Thoughts on Jaeschke? He seems to play well when called upon. I mean hell he rescued us in that match in week 2 against Japan. And he played well against Brazil. Do we have a lot of depth on our bench? What do you think?

If USA wants to qualify to F6, only take Ensing at the last stop. Langlois is unfortunately more versatile which makes him a better opposite than Ensing.
We do not have depth in MBs. In my opinion, no one is world class in this position anymore. They are also too old. I would like to see some of the younger MBs breaking through like Stahl.
Russell is much better as this kind of server shifting to power and deception. He's not prone to errors like the other guys. He just probably needs to improve and catch up with his physical training as he's been set back by injuries during the last stretch of his club season in Perugia to keep the consistency in strength.

Christenson S
Russell/Sander (Jaeschke) OH Holt/Smith (Jendryk) MB Anderson (Patch) Opp
Shoji L
Anderson can score from anywhere on the court, wicked serve, way way better blocker, way way better defense, leadership, can pass and a swing that can get the team out of trouble on a bailout facing a triple.
Ben cant do ANY of those things equally or better at this stage of his development.....yet. Hopefully he will in the next few years.
Christenson - no brainer
Shoji - played much better last weekend and we wont take 2 liberos
Sander has developed a complete game.
Russell can carry the offensive load and the staff and Micah seem bent on developing this and his strength to do so by the sheer number of sets he is getting and workload the past 2 weeks. He will be our main "Go To" guy next Anderson.
Jaeschke is one helluva option off the bench but I would consider him a part time starter for either OH even in big matches. He can be electric.
On that train of thought, while Holt and Smith each are just more polished in every skill, Jendryk will continue to see big matches and he is becoming such a strong dynamic force.

Why on earth is Smith captain? It should be Christenson.

Smith was on the squad in London along with Anderson. He is one of the oldest members of the team. David Lee was the previous captain and he was a 3 time Olympian. Kawika Shoji has been captain in the past also. Typically you would want the most level headed player to be captain as they have to talk to the officials during disputes.
