The school I went to is now $17k/year. It's not particularly expensive as private high schools go. (When we went there my mother taught there, so my sister and I got a discount.) The schools that are single-sex are often run by "orders". (Jesuits are an order, for example.) In the Seattle area, I think there are two all-girl Catholic schools (Holy Names, run by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, and Forest Ridge, run by the Sacred Hearts). There is one all-boys school (O'Dea, run by the Christian Brothers). And there are four co-ed schools. Seattle Prep is run by the Jesuits. The other schools are Bishop Blanchet, Kennedy, and Eastside Catholic -- Blanchet and Kennedy are "diocesan", meaning run directly by the Archdiocese (ie. the office of the archbishop). I'm not sure about Eastside Catholic -- I seem to recall they were actually just founded by a bunch of parents who didn't want their kids to commute across the lake. Some schools are a lot cheaper than others. Usually the diocesan schools are less expensive -- they are sort of the "public schools" of the Catholic school system. O'Dea is $14K, Kennedy is $15K, Holy Names is $16K, Blanchet is $17K, Seattle Prep is $20K, Eastside is $23K, Forest Ridge is $32K ($60K as a boarding school). Notice that some of the single-sex schools are among the least expensive but one of them is the most expensive. All of these schools have dress codes (which also cover things like hair and jewelry, etc.). Forest Ridge is the only one that has uniforms: I feel sorry for the girl standing far right. Her school sweater must be a hand-me-down from her older gargantuan sister. Also, all the school sweaters are different -- the school designation over the heart, the v-neck cut. I suppose that might be intentional. Maybe they are trying to show that the uniforms are not all entirely uniform. This picture is from their website, on the page that explains their uniform policy. Apparently, on Tues and special occasions the girls have to be in full uniform. M,W,Th they have a relaxed uniform policy -- like they can wear Forest Ridge logo t-shirt and FR logo sweatpants. Or a white polo shirt and khaki pants. Friday is "free dress". When I went to Blanchet we were not allowed to wear blue jeans except on Friday, which meant that almost everyone reflexively always wore blue jeans on Friday.

This thread has veered off nicely. My brother has back problems, I would not wish that on anyone(OK, maybe a few people I know).
For Jmac, the good news is if he gets it fixed he will be able to start over if he wants.
Around Boston, the catholic schools are the mid-priced non public option. Probably pretty typical. They specialize in Hockey. Some play football. Vball is not a real HS sport.
Boston College is #32 will a bullet in the US News and Reports list. Since they abandoned their mission to educate Boston catholic youth decades ago, a shrinking population I admit, you have a better chance to get into BC if you are from California than JP or Hyde Park. They went national and are coming after Notre Dame. Joining the ACC was a go big or go home move that has not worked out in the two big sports, but they are OK in others. With the Jason Kennedy hire they are expecting to finish ahead of the irish in the volleyball standings sooner rather than later.
Whichever school you are at, you use the default recruiting advantages that you have, if any.

(The nuns look to have conceded defeat in "the battle of the hemline".) some have logos and some don't. And the logos are different. Why must the skirts always be plaid? Won't someone from another clan be offended?

I assume it was only chosen because it matches their school colors.

You can find their history if you search for "42nd Regiment of Foot"
