Well ahead of C-USA, A10, MVC (miss anyone?). I thought of the Big East and Big West off the top of my head. These others came from looking through the rankings. Okay, so I’ll just do this thing. Based on median rpi at the end of last season: 1. PAC12 2. B1G 3. SEC 4. Big 12 5. ACC 6. WCC 7. Big East 8. CAA 9. ASUN 10. AAC The big west exist you know. T

I wouldn't even know how to argue the median RPI so well done. The BIG, Big 12 and WCC have some weak teams at the bottom. But in terms of which conferences can send a top 3-4 conference team deep into the tourney, here is my take:
1) BIG 2) PAC12 3) SEC 4) WCC 5) BIG 12 6) ACC 7) THE REST

BYU comes in with a #8 pre-season ranking in the AVCA poll, and San Diego is all the way up at #14.
The Volleytalk Poll put BYU at #6 and San Diego at #19.
The WCC tends to be a little late releasing their own coaches poll and pre-season all-conference picks. In the past few years, the poll has come out between August 16-August 25...very close to the first match date.

Everybody hates it (my 10 year old daughter knows to take it with a grain of salt) and it doesn’t mean anything come tournament time. The main knock on San Diego is of course “They lost Gengebacher.” Also saw some questions about OPP and libero out in the ether. My takes: Madill will fill Gengenbacher’s shoes...eventually. It’s just a question of how long it takes. I’m guessing May could be a slight upgrade at OPP. Libero has never been a problem as USD. In Petrie and Hilliard I trust. Otherwise, I’m hoping BYU goes on a pre-season rampage and LMU and Pepperdine pick up one resume building win each.

Well, the interesting thing about San Diego is that Gengenbacher was never a first team WCC teamer ( if memory serves me right) until her senior year, when she had a breakout season and was POY. But she didn’t have anywhere near the kind of HS setting experience that the new recruit has (was more of a basketball player/great athlete, who really improved at setting over her four years). And San Diego just seems to truck along every year, regardless of who is doing the setting. It sounds like the new Canadian freshman setter will be very experienced and shouldn’t need long to get up to the NCAA level of play, and San Diego never struggles to put several good ‘littles’ on the floor. The returning players are very seasoned, the recruiting class is excellent, and the coaching is good. The more I think about it, the more I believe they deserve their preseason #14 ranking.

Also, we never mentioned the PrepVolleyball recruiting class rankings...BYU came in at a stellar #8 in recruiting, headlined by Gneiting. San Diego had the #27 recruiting class. Pepperdine and Santa Clara were both Highest Honorable Mention (and Santa Clara added Dreyer as a transfer after that). Pacific was High Honorable Mention, which looked really good to fill in their roster before they lost 8 of the 11 players on their 2017 stat sheet.

If you read the write-up on the San Diego recruiting class, PrepVolleyball says that they would have been ranked in the Top 10 if you include international players (Madill) and transfers (May). Along with the Senior Ace Lukes on the outside, this team should be very good and I would not be surprised if all three started.

Somewhere in a back-and-forth w/ some other posters (some of them from other leagues), we were discussing the ACC, Big 12, plus WCC as 4A, 4B, and 4C: conference strength-wise. Make WCC 4A!

BYU is going to stream their exhibition match vs Utah Valley University on August 18 at 1 pm Mountain time, on BYUtv. This will be a great look at who’s got the edge for the starting lineup.
Any other WCC teams have exhibition matches that will be open to the public? In past years, most did not.
