As good as Katie Lang is, we never know if she will be ready for her freshman year so we need a good one to come in. There is also the injury factor. If we don’t get a quality backup setter and for some reason Norene(for her senior season) cannot go, we will be in trouble.
A setter with 2 years left would be ideal. One year to backup Norene or set the 6-2 with Norene in 2019 and to be there in case Katie struggles her first year in 2020

My suggestion (even though it will NEVER happen):
Redshirt Norene Iosia for 2019 season. Perhaps she can play beach instead which she can do with an indoor scholarship. Meanwhile, let Bailey Choy or some other upperclass transfer setter set the team in 2019. In 2020, Norene Iosia sets her senior year while Kate Lang serves as backup and subbed in occasionally for development. Honestly, I don't think Hawaii will lose a lot by having Iosia sit. Her setting has been off this season and last season. I mean, she's not a world class setter. She needs some work with the middles and over the years, it has not been getting better.
If not the above, it would make sense to bring in a junior transfer for 2019 so that she can backup Norene Iosia in 2019 and start in 2020 as Kate Lang serves as backup.

How long ago did the male coach from BYU hand over the coaching job to his sister? Now look were BHU is sitting? IMO, maybe that will be RAMS in a couple of years...

Both Hawaii and BYU are in somewhat unique recruiting situations and I think Hawaii could end up in a similar place as BYU. I think it will take more than a couple of years, though. BYU had been making the Elite 8 or Sweet Sixteen for years in the 1990s (but had a couple of 2nd round exits), then struggled in the 2000s until Shawn Olmstead took over in 2011. The next year they started making the Sweet 16 consistently and were the NCAA runner-up in 2014. They look to be in the FF this season (though that's always hard to predict with certainty). I could see something similar with Hawaii but BYU had only been out of a Sweet 16 for three years when Shawn took over and Heather took over the summer after they'd been NCAA runner-ups. Hawaii was in the ELite 8 in 2015 but has mostly been getting bounced in the 2nd round in the 2010s. I think the trajectories of BYU and Hawaii could be very similar, though. I could see them making the Sweet 16s in a couple of years if the recruits pan out.

To me, anyway, the most critical position Robyn needs to fill next year is the Libero position, whether it be with a Freshman, or a transfer. If the Wahine cannot receive, or pass, it will not matter how good Iosia is, as a setter, or even how good the potential recruits are. Without a good receiving, and passing, Libero, everything else does not matter.

One thing that is overlooked here is, will Robyn hold a regular Spring practices. I say this cause Robyn will have a very limited number of players to work with. Iosia (setter), Ross, Sibley, and Castaneda (OH & OPP), Krug and Williams (Middle), if Burns does not return, and finally, Okino and Gong (DS & Libero). That is not many players to work with. But it will give these players extensive practice sessions. Almost like individual attention, not having to split the practice session with another player.

Another thought would be, since there is a limited number of returning players, will we see a vast improvement skill wise with these returning players next year. Since they all will basically have individual attention during Spring practice. Not like they will have to share individual, and practice, session with another player, at their prospective position.

They could always bring in male volleyball volunteers to work out with the team in scrimmages.

If the rumor turns out to be true, concerning Choy transferring to Hawaii. Can you imagine how effective the Wahine will be offensively with the replacement of Ma'afala with Choy.

Agree with various posters here that we definitely need the 2nd setter and a legit libero to replace Tita after this season. My wish for the 2nd setter is that she is taller and sets quick to the pins, not so tight to the net..and if I can be greedy here, has some decent blocking and serving ability.

Those types of setters usually end up in the Power 5 conferences.
