Her bump setting looks well placed, but is it a concern that she bump set so much, especially after high balls? Hope she can build strength A lot of setters bump set when the ball is high because it’s really easy to double if you take it with your hands. Much harder to time the overhead set with a high ball. Sorry for the misunderstanding. My question was more along the lines of strength. Most setters will take high balls with their hands, if they have enough strength to play the ball without a double. In the vid, she seems to either not have the strength or the confidence to take it with her hands?

When she gets to Hawai'i, I'm sure Robyn will fix that issue.

Guys, Lang setting out of system plays with two hands more regularly will get addressed at Hawaii. Hello, a 3-time Olympian at setter will be her coach, lol.
Hope we hear a few more recruits committing for 2020 and 2021 before the start of the season. Getting bored here, lol.

I wonder if the staff is going after Kami Miner, or if everyone is just assuming she’s Texas and Stanford’s to compete over. She’s a 2021 I think. Absolute monster athlete and would be the perfect candidate to push Kate Lang. Very Kendra Koelsch like so can be used in multiple ways.

Robyn said she’s going after the best Blue Chip Players and Miner would probably have a more fulfilling career at UH then some of those other programs. It’s early but I’m sure the way UH is recruiting now will open the eyes of a lot of players who want to play in the best possible COMMUNITY for volleyball in the country. What do you think the coaching staff should just “settle” like Shoji was doing in his later years ?

If she feels a player could be a good fit for Hawaii, she won't be afraid to try to recruit that player, even if that player is being recruited by the likes of Stanford or Texas. I'm not saying Robyn is recruiting Kami Miner (we're good with Kate Lang), just that it's foolish to believe that Robyn wouldn't do everything she can to help make her program better. As for Miner, her ultimate goal is to be on US Women’s Olympic Volleyball Team. Who better to learn from and be coached and guided towards that goal than Robyn?

I think Shoji looked at his recruiting budget and decided to maximize his rate of return with players he has a high(er) chance of landing instead of blowing $1,000+ (on airfare, hotel, meals, etc) on a player he knows will most likely go to Stanford, Texas, Nebraska, Penn State, Wisconsin, USC, Minnesota, and the like. You also need a detail-oriented staff to spot talent, the way Scott Wong found the Emily Maglios and Kalei Greeleys. You also need luck, e.g., Swedish Angelica Ljungqvist going after Swedish Hanna Hellvig who mentioned that her parents knew Ljungqvist and thus felt comfortable flying all the way over to the middle of the Pacific Ocean to play volleyball. Kim Willoughby was also luck. Dave and Charlie went after her when the other schools didn’t and by the time the other schools wanted her, it was too late.
Anyway, I think it’s safe to say that if Shoji stayed longer, Hawaii would not have all the players that it now has. No way. Akana, maybe, but not Hellvig, Westerberg, Igiede, and Wagoner. I thought I read somewhere that Wagoner emailed Hawaii several times with no positive response from the Shoji clan until Ah Mow came on board.

Robyn is a former Olympian Setter and I can't really think of too many female coaches as decorated as her who oversee programs with as much national attention and pull as Hawaii. I understand the BigWest isn't always seen as the big name conference but I think a lot of schools are getting better. Would've loved Hawaii to join the Pac 12 (Did WONDERS for Utah and Colorado's recruiting abilities) but hey as long as we are winning the conference and eventually having post season games like 2015 vs Penn State, then I foresee Hawaii being an even more attractive place to play for high level athletes than it was under Shoji.

Never underestimate the power of luck, see, e.g., Sam Crosson’s numerous legacy players like the Van Windens and Nelson. Yeah, some people like to say “make your own luck” but I think these people are insecure braggarts. Luck is huge. See, e.g., Ah Mow didn’t orchestrate the mass exodus of Oregon players to Hawaii.

Not even to knock on Dave but I just didn't feel like there was a lot of real effort in maintaining contingency of quality players to step in after big names came in. Iosia would have been an attractive enough setting recruit (As I'm sure Lang will probably be as well) to score a few stronger arms but the drop off was pretty significant IMO Hartong!, Greely!, Granato!, N.Taylor! >>> Casteneda, Castillo, Ross, Sibley... Maglio, Mitchem, Adolpho, Magill >>> Burns, Williams, Howling Maybe it was just bad timing of a rutt a lot of players were all going through at once, but it's not like we don't have a history of getting some of the very best to ever play the game. And lets not pretend like some of these girls don't have very "facepalm" reasons for choosing schools. Some just like certain colors and Nike Swooshes (cough*BVS*cough)

I just think Robyn needs to be smart about it. Kami miner has almost 0 chace of coming here. Robyn needs to go after the girls with local ties, and are blue chipper (Which is quite alot actually). I can't see her holding a scholarship for someone like miner, unless miner genuinly showed some interest in us.
Sure she can go after them, but im sure robyn and Co know their chances.

I’m not at all worried about Robyn’s approach to recruiting. She knows what’s she’s doing.

Angelica has a law degree. You have to be very smart to get a law degree. Also, all you have to do is look who they have recruited this year. No worries here.
