I'm personally a bit surprised that Diao Linyu continues to be on the roster. In the Chinese Volleyball League (CVL), she seems pretty average to me and seems to be in over her head when given a chance to play with the national team. Also, from watching the league this winter, I think that Shanghai's starting setter is the 2nd best setter in all of China. I seem to be the only one who thinks that way. I agree, Diao Linyu is pretty mediocre. Her sets are generally inaccurate, but also awkward looking. They must have hope for her in 2024 because I know for sure she won't be going to Tokyo in 2020. Yao Di who is currently Ding Xia's best substitute has hit a plateau these past few years and her skills haven't improved in my opinion. I've also noticed the performance of Shanghai's setter Bian Yuqian since last season and she has some skills worth getting a look at. They should at least give her a chance on the B team. I don't think Lang Ping has settled on the back-up setter position. Ever since Wei Qiuyue retired after Rio, China has lacked a strong and reliable 2nd setter on the team. So I think Bian or anyone else still have a chance.

I would say the 2nd setter and 3rd middle blocker positions are still open, maybe even the 2nd opposite since Zeng Chunlei has been rarely used last year. If there is a young talent that shows potential next season I think Lang Ping won't hesitate to give them a chance, after all Gong Xiangyu only played one season(2015-2016) in the Chinese League before getting a stint in the NT, then earned a spot at Rio.

Some recent rumors are that Lang Ping has moved Liu Yanhan (OH) and Zheng Yixin (MB) to opposite. Both have been moved to the B Team because competition for outside hitters and middle blockers have made it too difficult for them to secure a spot. Gong Xiangyu has been China’s only stable opposite post Rio 2016. Now they are in search for an attacking opposite which unfortunately Zeng Chunlei cannot provide, her age and injuries have impacted her performance which may ultimately affect her position with the national team.

She does have the advantage of experience and has won a few important major international tournaments, like the 2015 World Cup and the 2017 World Grand Champions Cup. Domestically, she was also part of of her Beijing's championship winning squad in the 18-19 season. But if her form can't hold up, I fear her days on the NT will be numbered. Now the question is, who will be better than Zeng and take her place on the NT?

I think it's 5 times, so if I am not mistaken, they are the leading team in the history of the tournament in terms championships won. Good consolation for Tianjin after they lost the league championship to Beijing. Interesting enough, NT players Liu Xiaotong, who plays for Beijing against Tianjin in the domestic league and Gong Xiangyu, who plays for Jiangsu against Beijing, both are on the Tianjin squad for this tournament. I suppose Tianjin really wants to win this one, being the host for this edition of the Asian Women Club Championships.

Two thoughts: IMO, Pleumjit Thinkaow should have been on the list as one of the two best middle blockers. A generally good passing Supreme Chonburi team really struggled when Li Yingying was serving.
