Cheney is 2020, right?abili As for Cox, they can hide her from serve receive - and use her primarily for serving and the pipe. Her serve is vastly improved. They did hide her in serve receive the entire spring tournament. She got moved up once when LaGarde struggled. But, I agree, her ability to be a weapon from the back row (which I think her kill percentage was vastly higher from the back row last year when she was playing six rotations) will be a welcome addition.

Any word on the new coaching search at Wake Forest. Would Mike Schall be in the mix?

The University of Georgia Coach, Tom Black, is an up and coming younger coach in his mid 40's. In February of this year, he was named Canadian Women's National Team Coach. I bet he gets a pipeline of talent from Canada down to Athens. Good thing that UNC got Parker Austin's commitment in November, otherwise I think UGA would have to be an attractive school for her and a savvy career move for her Olympic future. I also hope that Lauren Harrison doesn't get homesick, an hour drive to Athens beats a six hour drive to Chapel Hill, plus her older brother is on the UGA basketball team. Atlanta and Canada may literally "go to the Dogs" at the Heels expense.

Based on what i have seen, Austin seems to be interested in UNC not only because of volleyball, but the academics and the environment. Harrison is the same, she wanted to come to UNC for academics in her field and she has a very close group of friends she has made in Howard, Cox, and the incoming recruit Peck I believe. Harrison is not going anywhere. I do not think Black will harm UNC's recruiting.....it seems we are doing a lot of home recruiting now in North Carolina and the SC kids we have coming are kids that also were recruited hard by other nearby SEC schools. Mike has a ton of club connections and he can go out and really compete for any kid he wants....look at Shaffmaster who the B1G went after....and he and Susan snagged her. UNC does not rely on a foreign pipeline so I do not see concern there. Mike Schall is not going anywhere.....he seems dedicated to Joe and the program and also just joined the coaching profession again due to its hectic schedule and his family. I doubt being a head coach right now is the goal. However, I guess crazier things have happened and assistant coaches are often as busy as the head coach certain times of year...

"Eve Rackham is not going anywhere, she'll be the next coach at UNC when I step down." Joe Sagula pre January 2018
How many recruits did he tell that to?

There was more to Eve leaving..... and none of those recruits who told that to have backed out because of their faith in Joe to be a good coach and put the right people in place. Regardless, the AD/Coaching staff found someone very capable in Mike. And the fact that we are still recruiting at a high level for the class of 2020 and 2021 tells me that while Eve's recruiting was great, Mike, Susan and Co are doing just fine. I do not see Joe retiring until he gets the program back on track....and even then it will be hard getting Eve back for money reasons and other reasons.

I was referring to future recruits....those students were already part of the program in 2016, so I did not include them in my thought process. Ava definitely left for Eve but Carlton left because her dream school was Florida....Cheyenne Huskey committed before her and then when Huskey transferred that opened a spot back open for Holly to play there with her JNT friends. Borup did not want to be part of the rebuild and Fields went closer to home due to her family and injury. Eve may have played a role but there were larger factors. But look at the high recruits we have now; Cox, Harrison, Clark, and add in Fischer and Merkler who verbaled while Eve was still there and they are still all in.

The Sr, Jr and Youth programs are kept very separate in Canada - different training locations, timelines etc. Out of three years that I have been keeping track, the Jr Team scrimmaged the Sr team only once and the coach was not even in sight. So unless Tom actually makes an effort to search out and see the Top U16-U18 athletes, he will never see them. Besides by then he would have finished his recruiting classes anyway, those girls would be too “old” 😂😂😂

Let the program speak for itself:
After a terrible 2017 and the coaching departures, Joe gets Atherton from Nebraska, and Cox, Harrison, and Bell stick with Carolina. Austin commits regardless.
After a worse 2018, we do lose Bell, but we keep Cox, Harrison chooses to stay even with a full four years of eligibility, Austin is still coming, and we still have big top 50 recruits that are verbaled and committed to coming in Kaya Merkler, Sophie Fischer, Maylen Mitrovich, and Mabrey Shaffmaster.
Still time for things to change but Eve's departure seem to have effected a couple players on the roster while she was there more so than future recruits because of the great job Mike and Susan are doing on that front.

Maybe that's why the "former coach" is the "former coach" and they hired a new coach. He can own Canada if he wants, like Coach K owns USA basketball. So unless Tom actually makes an effort to search out and see the Top U16-U18 athletes, he will never see them. Besides by then he would have finished his recruiting classes anyway, those girls would be too “old” Parker Austin committed a year ago, even though by your definition she "would be too old"

If you "Let the program speak for itself" at this point in time, you'd have to say it has spoken poorly for two years and any other coach not named Joe Sagula would have been let go. ie Larry Fedora.
I hope Joe can turn it around, he certainly has nine lives.
