I saw former N.C. Gatorade POY and top-30 recruit OH Taylor Rowland is transferring from Auburn. Any chance UNC makes a run at her? I know we are super deep, but in-state talent is important. A "super deep" team that finished 4-14 in the ACC. You must think that Segula is incompetent. A team with two top-22 ranked pins, a third who is a member of the Canadian Junior National Team and would likely be a top-20 recruit if she qualified, a senior transfer who had a decent year last year, a lot of scholarships already out. No, I don’t think he’s incompetent. I’m just wondering about playing time, managing personalities for the betterment of team chemistry, and scholarships. Especially given they plan to run a 5-1. While I think he needs to go after her, I wonder if there is a point in which they’d choose not to given the state of the current roster.

North Carolina has all the pieces already to be back to the top of the crop. Leadership was the issue last year. Not having a vocal defensive player to set the defense effected every aspect of the game. I think either Fradenburg assumes that leadership over the spring or Diaz will take the libero jersey from her at some point. Diaz is a fired up player and is jsut as technically skilled as Mia. I like Mia but team first.
As already mentioned, UNC has some studs coming back and joining the pins. No doubt in my mind that a healthy Cox, who apparently was not healthy part of the year, will evolve over the spring. I see them transitioning her to either a 6 rotation left or a 6 rotation opposite. Harrison is the dynamite we were missing last year. She is a game changer and if fully healthy, she can take over a match. Lauren's offense is a lot like Scole's offense was but with the power that Treacy could bring. She also is a OOS player that we did not have. I do wonder if they limit her to 3 rotations this year due to just recovering from a knee injury or if they slowly introduce her to 6 rotations as the year goes. I also hope she chooses to not transfer since she has 4 years left. Add in Parker Austin, who would probably be a Top 20 recruit if she was in the USA and can already play 6 rotations at a high level (see video above where she is a 6' 3" libero for a match!), and you have solid pin options. That does not even include Wine who had a good stretch last year. I really think Peck ends up redshirting; she has potential to grow into a great player but may need time behind the other players. While I think Rowand would add some tremendous ball control and is a great hitter, I do not think she is needed. Just my 2 cents.
In the middle, UNC returns Esterly, Clark, and Tontai. Esterly is a fabulous blocker but this team needs offense. I hope she works at that over the spring. I want to see Clark get more reps. Clark is a dynamic blocker and proved last year she could be good offensively. However, Skyy Howard is the REAL deal. She can get up and is very offensive and is able to run a slide in a 5-1, something we lacked last year. She also is a shut down blocker. I am being fairly blunt when I say this and I liked Bell, but Howard is more athletic and a more well rounded middle.
Setting is dependent on defense. I think if Atherton could just be more vocal that would be helpful. Your setter needs to be a fired up leader and Atherton has that ability. However, I would not count out Cheney or Archer getting reps if Atherton does not step up and provide the spark needed to run the team.
All in all, UNC has on their roster the #8 recruiting class from 2018 and this 2019 class would likely be in the top 15 if Austin was a USA player. However, this class will greatly add talent to the UNC roster, now it is up to the coaching staff to effectively develop that talent into the new system UNC is implementing.

Is there any word about what the new system is?
Mia Fradenburg's going to be one of two seniors on the team along with Moseman. Personally, I think senior leadership is extremely valuable, especially when the senior has played a lot and continues to play a lot. fwiw, I wouldn't say that any of the last liberos for UNC were super vocal. That said, I do think it helps to have someone on the court who is vocal and/or demonstrative. I think Fradenburg will make a fine senior leader, if she has the opportunity to be the that on the floor.

Have not heard of any particular system but have heard on several occasions that they are trying some new things in the spring, which most teams do. Im just ready to see what they can do with this team. I do think vocal leadership needs to be established soon.

No doubt in my mind that a healthy Cox, who apparently was not healthy part of the year, will evolve over the spring. I see them transitioning her to either a 6 rotation left or a 6 rotation opposite. How about transitioning Cox to the middle, a dynamic athlete with great vertical jump, hitting unstoppable ones against a less established block.
She doesn't seem to have the hands, technique, or mentality for the back row and can't excel as a six-rotation player, nor does she hit OOS sets particularly well. She was on course to set UNC season records for attack errors and service errors when they removed her from the back row, where she also had lots of serve/recieve errors and was picked on by opposing teams. She was able to concentrate better as a three-rotation and not have to worry about uncomfortable rotations into the back row.
A middle duo of Cox and Howard would be unstoppable offensively and great defensivly. We all love Esterly but she can't terminate.
Inserting Cox as a six-rotation player, is like trying to put a square peg in a round hole. She can be great if you put her in position to succeed. The team needs to play to her obvious strengths and keep her away from her evident weaknesses. That is truly great coaching.
My two cents.

I am not saying she does not have the ability, but Cox is not a middle. would not discount it because Fricano moved form pins to middle, but the pins were full at the time. The first few matches of the year some of her best kills were bombs from the back row. Her defense and serve receive was very inconsistent but do not count her out. Taylor Leath was a freshman that did not even get any back row time hardly at all and over one year emerged to be the 6 rotation ACC POY. Cox was so error prone because like a freshman, she swung hard at everything and not all sets were optimal because of the defense. That has to do with maturity not form. Also, defenses keyed in on her because for a while she was all UNC had. We can agree that Esterly cannot terminate which is why I want to see Clark get time in the middle. I think you see Harrison and Austin on the left and then Cox as an opposite. However, the spring is a time to experiment.

Looking at the numbers to determine which player was most efficient in 2018. Here is a list of front row players with their positive impact on the season which I'm saying is points scored minus errors, so who has made a positive impact on the scoreboard
Bell +156 Wine +123 Esterley +82 Laufenberg +74 Cox +72 Clark +50 Tontai +47.5 LaGarde +11
To work in who has had more opportunities, we divide positive impact (points minus errors) by sets played
Bell 1.71 per set Wine 1.44 per set Clark 1.14 per set Esterley 1.05 per set Laufenberg 0.95 per set Tontai 0.95 per set LaGarde 0.92 per set Cox 0.79 per set
So I'm not sure but it looks like Cox was not put in position to succeed, maybe she would be better at a different position than a six rotation outside.

Personally, I see Cox on the opposite. I know that was where she primarily played with the JNT as well. I assume Harrison and Austin will man the left. Wine may start the year there but I could see her taking a role-player role if the other two live up to potential.

I think Austin will play all 6 rotations, and Harrison may be limited to 3 to begin with. Her back row play was still a work in progress before her injury. Or Wine may be a back row player for Cox if she is opposite. Wine has proven her passing is decent and she can occasionally attack well out of the back row.

I see Harrison playing OPP this season. My daughter played with her at Tsunami in Club and she is very effective on the right side.

That depends on if OOS they are capable of setting the RS. I also wonder if Cox would be better better at OPP. I definitely think Austin is a lock at the left side but I can see Cox and Harrison being used on either pin. Im more interested to see who the middles will be. I think Howard is a lock but there may be some competition between Esterly and Clark for sure, add in Tontai. Libero could also be contentious between Fradenburg and Diaz.

Cox would be an amazing middle I bet. I kind of really like that thought.

I am just excited for spring scrimmages to start. I am interested to see how the new personnel aid in turning the team around and where everyone plays. You have to think there has to be some excitement with the wins a the end of the season and the new players coming in.
I expect to see Howard contribute immediately. I also think Clark challenges Esterly for the other middle spot. I think that until Austin arrives on campus in the fall that we will see Wine this spring as a starter on the left and Harrison/Cox on the other two pins in some combo. Not sleeping on Lagarde either.
