Club season is here! I'm mostly curious about two things- If Houghton can contribute to the backcourt this year and if there are any 14's in state talent brewing (the instate talent for the next few years looks a bit thin). Houghton plays on the 18's vision team (same as Xu, the Stanford setter) but it looks like she's hitting on the OH? interesting. They will be at triple crown, so hopefully they get on a show court or two. Summers plays for a new club, and they'll also be at triple crown. Looking at 2022's and 2023's, there are a couple local clubs fielding younger teams this year at triple crown and I'll be curious to see some of those players. Are they planning on showing the games online? Flovolleyball or other portal or free?

Houghten is good, she will contribute, watched her for four years and she is just constantly improving...last year she was just so solid, didn't find any holes in her backrow...honestly she did well in the front row last year too, just a smart volleyball player that does well with the tools she has. She seems like such an awesome kid too. UW got a good one. I sure hope so. Washington hasn't had a real impact DS who could push points on serve and be a consistent backrow contributor since Mcafee a decade ago. That role has been a glaring weakness of the UW squad for years. It was masked during the 6-2 era, but if Cook is determined to make a 5-1 work with Powell for her tenure, getting two true back row players on the roster should priority number #1 between now and the start of 2020. Speaking of a 6-2, I'm not entire convinced Cook shouldn't try it out a bit next year. Powell's feeling notwithstanding, if we don't get any added defensive benefit subbing out the RS, and if our passing isn't strong enough to give slides good looks in transition, why not put a hitter full time on the RS? I wouldn't want to risk losing Powell in the long term, but a 6-2 could be the best ceiling option for this team for 2019 and 2020.

We haven't seen much of Calle, other than as a serving sub. How many DSs did JMac carry before running a 6-2? Not much more than a couple, I suspect, not the half-dozen or more that Rose does. I expect that UW limits the number of walk-ons, since it is an expense, with access to the training table, etc.
