Well. If the badgers win the B1G this year, they will have earned it. The second gophers match will be key I think. That is the team that I rank second right now. Nebraska I've yet to be convinced by. They just lost a set to Indiana for example. PSU has weaknesses against everyone besides the Michigan teams for some reason. Nebraska is the team I think that is still favored to win BIG. Their schedule is SO easy relative to other top teams in BIG. I think they lose to Minnesota based on what I'm seeing. The B1G is weak in other respects this year.

The B1G is weak in other respects this year. Minnesota is probably the 2nd best team...when healthy. Whatever is going on with Kylie Miller is way more concerning than Rettkes foot. She didnt play again tonight, and based on the match thread it sounds like she might not have even been in the building. If this concussion mess lingers I would expect them to fall out of the race. McMenimen has been good in leading them thusfar, but Nebraska, PSU and Wisconsin will abuse her blocking. Without Miller, Id expect at least 3 more losses. Nebraska will end up being the chief competition

I think PSU has been playing better, 5 setter notwithstanding.

Do you recall who said that? Was it coach or Arias? On road trips, it's basically the same thing. Diane and Jon have direct information from the coaching staff. Doesn't mean coaches aren't strategically lying. Jon Arias said it.

Sorry I am behind why isn’t Rettke playing? Some kind of foot/lower leg injury. First became apparent against Illinois last weekend where she was limping pretty noticably a few times. She was in a walking boot against Northwestern last weekend and did not play. Also did not play tonight against Michigan State, but during the pregame on the radio it was made to sound like she could have played. So, specific injury is unknown. But, she is out due to a lower leg/foot injury. Or, in hockey parlance, a lower body injury

I wanted to point out the improvement evident from yesterday's match that may have gone under the radar given Rettke's absence. I know that the MSU match wasn't beautiful. The passing was off, the middle attack and slide left a little to be desired.
But here is the upside.
Wisconsin can now win matches from the left side. Haggerty and Loberg have both improved so much - especially in terms of their "bounce-back-ability" as Sheff calls it. They make errors, but they don't get overly conservative, or rutted. They have enough tricks to try different things now and keep ahead of the defense and the block. They are swinging with authority and precision a lot of the time. OOS swings have improved big time - though the OOS setting could still be better.
The badgers still have to pass well to beat the best teams, but the improvement from the left side means that there is no one way to beat the badgers anymore. The badgers aren't as susceptible to good serving teams.

All that said, the badgers are probably even odds to lose against Michigan without Rettke. That will be a much stiffer test.

Badgers' serve and receive-related stats - B1G stats from 10/26/2019
It's even more impressive when you look at the B1G only stats, which in UWs case has been against all of the best teams in conference except Michigan. Badgers are number 1 in B1G play at 1.97 aces per set , 0.12 greater than Michigan. Three badger players are in the top seven. They are also number 1 in aces give up, at 0.63 per set, or 0.22 less than illinois and 0.39 less than PSU. (Michigan gives up 1.2). That's a net of 1.34 points per set. You have to consider service errors too, but the badgers SE/SA ratio is damn near 1 (65/61). That's a really good ratio to be leading the conference in aces. In 2017, they had 77 aces and 177 SEs for a SE/SA ratio of 2.3. Even last year it was 141/93, or 1.5. They are two thirds of the way to the total number of aces last year, and less than halfway to the number of SEs. So, they have managed to keep the SEs relatively stable while raising the number of aces.It is hard to compare with other teams because many don't report SEs, and they are not in the B1G stats. But against UW, B1G teams have had 71 SEs and only 19 SAs, for a ratio of nearly 3.7(!!) So whatever teams are doing against other teams, they have 7 more SEs and 32 fewer SAs than UW in games against the badgers. That's a net of 39 points over 31 sets - more than 1 point net per set. It's impressive to get that many points net simply off your serve receive game. We're not even talking about disruption to the other teams offense.

Usually, about halfway through conference I do a deep dive into the available stats to compare the teams' strengths. I'll try to get to that after the Michigan match tomorrow.
