OK, so just to round off my thoughts, the match was coded overnight by the professionals over at the analytics site Volleymetrics and there's a few things I thought you guys might like. Firstly, we all saw how well Egglestone hit (22K on 46 swings) - she was only blocked once and only missed a line once - but her blocking was also INSANE. She had a 85.7% 'Good Block Touch' score. To put that in context, the second highest score on the Texas side was Micaya White at 50% and the highest for Santa Barbara was the MB Ennis at 54.2%. 85.7% is the highest score I can recall seeing, especially against a good offense. You can bet that as the match wore on that got into the heads of the UCSB hitters. The other thought, which kind of backs up what I was saying in an earlier post, was that Micaya White had 47 swings and wasn't stuff blocked ONCE. UCSB was either #1 or #2 (with Hawaii) for the best blocking team in the BW this year and they didn't roof her ONCE... That's unreal. Now, onto the change in the match. So Volleymetrics assigns passing grades (on a 3 point scale) for every pass. A serve receive error is a 0, a perfect pass is a 3. With 2 being 'a good pass' to the setter, your Libero should be your best ball control player and anything above 2.2 is strong, anything below 2 is going to hurt your team. Sydney Petersen passed a 1.43. Her first ball side out percentage was 7.3%. That isn't just bad. It's catastrophic. For comparison, Logan passed a 2.03 and Micaya a 1.83... Enter Autumn Rounsaville. She passed a 2.18 on the season but she passed 2.51 last night. Now, admittedly it was only 7 balls. But the fact that she stabilized the reception was HUGE. She also dug all 6 of the balls she got her hands on, Petersen was only digging at a 64% rate. And finally, since others noticed it, I just wanted to underline another important change Texas made in sets 4 and 5. They stopped serving anywhere near the UCSB Libero. She passed a 2.47 on 30 balls and UCSB were getting first ball side out on almost HALF of those (a ridiculous 47%). So that's 14 times she got her hands on the serve and UCSB won the point on their first swing. Remember, Petersen's FBSO was 7%! Just to show how great a passing grade of 2.47 is on 30 balls, Tara Wulf (who I think is a fantastic Libero btw) passed a 2.27 combined in her two matches against Texas this year. Fleck was also not just digging the ball but getting it back to the net. 42% of her digs resulted in a point for UCSB. The next closest to her on the UCSB side was Ruddins at 16%! To do that against the toughest hitters she has faced this year was really impressive and I'm excited to see how she'll improve as a Jnr next year. Overall Ruddins was a warrior - passed a 2.05, had a solid 43% good block touch rate and, like Micaya White, didn't get stuff blocked once. She showed her class but it just wasn't quite enough - thanks, imo, to a brilliantly timed switch in serve receive. Overall a great match. Hope the Longhorns win the whole thing now! Hook 'em! Good analysis. I don't think Elliott has the best reputation as an in-game tactician, but he made some great adjustments in this match. It probably helped that he had Khat Bell around to fire up the team while he was working on making the match-winning adjustments.

Speaking of blocking, that was a huge stat in favor of Texas. The box score stated that UCSB had zero blocking errors; is that even possible?

I've stated before that as a fan, I prefer an easy match sweep. But, that doesn't help our team in crunch time. UCSB punched us in the mouth in the second and third sets. The players fought hard for each other (as Hahn said in the post-game interview), and decided they were gonna punch first and harder. Love the fight they showed tonight. I dreaded the thought of a 5th set since all of our regular season losses were 5th set (and away).
I guess that's why we kept hoping for a top-4 seed so that the home crowd might help out in crunch time.
I don't buy the naysayers saying, "Oh, UCSB is used to hostile away games". One odd stat given on the Gaucho's web site is a listing of the attendance home and away:
Now, some of the numbers don't make sense like "0" people attending.
But the two biggest crowds they had were:
Cal-Poly: 2730 Long Beach State: 1166 @gregory for NCAAs: 3532 (Thursday game)
There's a thread asking about the place teams would least like to have to play in the tournament and Gregory is there for a reason (although I'm bummed the place was maxed out in attendance tonight).
Something appears to be slightly off on those numbers... the 5 setter in Hawaii had 6371 according to their box score: hawaiiathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/stats/2019/uc-santa-barbara/boxscore/22929

UCSB plays at Hawaii every year and usually in front of 6000 to 8000 fans....

UCSB plays at Hawaii every year and usually in front of 6000 to 8000 fans.... The UCSB gym is very small, the bleachers suck and they've only just installed seating for the home fans. There also isn't a strong volleyball culture among fans; which is disappointing considering the strength of the men's AND women's programs right now and the history of the women's program. They often only have less than 300 spectators (whoever records the UCSB attendances definitely exaggerates them). In all honesty though, I thought the venue gave the UCSB girls a lift. They have a tendency to start a little slow but I think the energy of the gym, the importance of the tournament & of course, the quality of the opponent, infused them with a little something extra. Tasia Farmer came out swinging better and more confidently than she has all season & Torre Glasker had her best offensive night of the season. I don't think the end of the match had anything to do with being over-awed. I think it was just an example of some incredible athletes (principally Logan and Micaya) just finding that extra gear and a slight shift in SR and service tactics. Texas are #2 (imo 1b with Baylor tbh) and they showed why in those last two sets.

Micaya's timely ace gave me flashbacks to Haley Eckerman's ace late in the second set of the 2012 national championship match against Oregon . . .

Obviously, we're all anxious to talk about the regional matchups. But, every seed still needs to get through this weekend's first and second round matches. I recall back in 2008 where we were supposed to meet Minnesota in the Austin regional if the seeds held up; but, Iowa State went to Minnesota and upset the Gophers in the second round. deja vu ? Back in 2016, we were supposed to meet Kansas in the regional final if the seeds held up. But, Creighton went to Kansas and upset KU. And, back in 2015 we were supposed to meet Wisconsin in the regional final, but Florida booted the Badgers in the regional semi-final in Austin. Maybe ISU or Creighton or Florida will do us another "favor" . . .Damn it, Creighton!
Gators, you got next!

It is the expectation that you are going to be playing a top 8 team in the regional finals so why all the worry about playing Minnesota?
