I’m about to head over there. Although only exhibition, I’m excited volleyball is back and can’t wait to see a preview of the Cats. Can you let us know how it goes? Some details? Thanks

I finally succeeded in inserting an image. Here are the two libero spreadsheets that I used last season. The first compiles actual statistics found at the SEC website, usually available by Monday afternoon. The second spreadsheet has taken the first, and simply sorted each category, numbering them from first to last, and totaled those stats into a composite score. There are obvious weaknesses, as the Volleytalk forum will recognize, in trying to rate a libero's performance, most important IMO: (1) No available passing stats; (2) Impact of strong or weak blocking; (3) impact of strong or weak setting. Also, there is always the opposition. Is a libero playing a strong RPI slate of opponents at a disadvantage in the stats, or is a libero playing a weak RPI slate of opponents at an advantage? I think in neither case...by the end of a long season, impact on the available stats appears to be negligible. That is just an opinion. I did not start the spreadsheets last year until late October, so I do not know if the SEC publishes the pre-conference statistics from the beginning of the season or waits until conference season starts. Also, I modified the spreadsheets this morning returning to the SEC website to cross-check my data. I have no idea why, but Missouri and South Carolina did not have any 2018 data posted, but I already had the conference-only data, so that is what is used in the attachments. As implied above, I think that 70 sets may probably be as reasonably reflective of performance as 100 sets. Please feel free to critique these spreadsheets if you feel that they might be improved. One thing to which I gave a lot of consideration was weighting the categories to more accurately reflect the actual work effort being invested by the libero. To that end, I used stats from the two favorites and one dark horse from last year. I was a little surprised, and you may be also. These are percentages of work done by the libero vis-a-vis their respective teams: Serving: Cianciulli-17%; Curry-15%; Valle-17%. Serve Receive: Cianciulli-33%; Curry-30%; Valle-36%. Digs: Cianciulli-31%; Curry-30%; Valle-36%. Sets: Cianciulli-10%; Curry-10%; Valle-12%. Aces: Cianciulli-16%; Curry-16%; Valle-14%. The respective ranges for these categories were 3%, 6%, 5%, 3%, and 3%. Where would the validity improve by weighting categories when, apparently, the SEC's best liberos were darn near doing identical work? Having said all of that, I am ready for the season to start!...can't wait to see where Camila Gomez, Best Libero of the 2019 Pan American Games, fits into the SEC Libero picture this year! Also, Gregory was not mentioned last year, although she ranked well well using the statistics, and some think we may see Cerame at libero. In any case, surely Cianciulli, Curry, and Gomez should be the favorites going into the season.

I wish I could see the spreadsheets, but your summaries are helpful, ksc . And I am not surprised - I feel like my advocacy for Valle has been VINDICATED!!!!

Thanks Sorry I didn’t respond to this but we went out last night and then I had work and other things today. Kentucky won 3-1 but obviously in an exhibition that isn’t too relevant. There weren’t any real surprises last night. Meyer definitely showed she wants to (and will be) a valuable asset replacing Morgan. Besides that, don’t expect any major changes from 2018 as it was the same old cast that took center stage. In summary, nothing noteworthy to report back but my impression is that they will definitely start off stronger than they did last season.

Thanks for the update No problem...wish I had more interesting reporting but I guess at least I don’t have to drop bad news like an injury. I’ll be at the open practice tomorrow and it’ll be a good opportunity to see what some of the freshman will bring to the table.

I saw the Vols beat High Point -16, -16, -12. Anyone go to the exhibition match? Curious how they looked.

Watching the Bama vs South Alabama exhibition on SECN+.
Bama won first two sets, South the 3rd. Byrd is setting six rotations for the Tide. Wells, FR MB for Bama, looks ready to play. Erin Curl is playing OPP. The Tide has really started to struggle in serve receive. South currently up 19-12 in set 4.

In Set 5, Neelon is in for Bama setting all the way around. Tons of missed serves from both teams, but especially South. Bama up 8-7 at the side change.

And Bama pulls away to win 15-11 at the end. I liked what I saw of Wells.
