IMHO... Hambly & staff was good at recruiting and not so good at player development. 2017 class ranked 7th; Cooney ranked #35, Deberg ranked #15, Omazic ranked #51, Van Dyke ranked #66 2016 class ranked 22nd; Korte ranked #35, Quade ranked #86 2015 class ranked 1st; Poulter ranked #3; Bastianelli ranked #10, Prince ranked #52 2014 class unranked; Donnelly 2013 class ranked 20th; Strizak ranked #22; Stadick ranked #51 2012 class ranked 25th; Mayers ranked #76; Viliunas ranked #34 2011 class ranked 3rd; Birks ranked #26, McMahon ranked #3, Stark ranked #53, Criswell ranked #33 2010 class ranked 7th; Bonilla ranked #60, Dorn ranked #6, Orozco ranked #33 Thank you, glad I'm not the only one that feels this way.

You can’t sign everyone. You have a limited number of scholarships per year (usually 2-3). What would be more helpful is if you explained, for a given class year, how many available scholarships Hambly had to work with, what positions he was looking for, the top in-state talent available, and who he eventually signed. Someone should put up a chart as follows: Class year | No. of avail. schols. | Illinois signees | Top In-State recruits | | | | |
I really don't feel like going through all that trouble. Suffice it to say that almost everyone I listed was an NCAA all-American, so other than a few people Hambly signed, Illinois' players didn't perform as well. Now, whether that's because Hambly didn't didn't do a good job developing his players or they just weren't as talented is open for debate. Or maybe both are true. But in most cases the players he signed were not as highly-ranked as the in-state kids whom he either didn't recruit or couldn't convince to come to Illinois.

On Rettke, Illinois recruited her for basketball. During an open gym at Illinois, she knew that basketball wasn’t for her.
She didn’t play volleyball at all until her freshman year in high school. Basketball had been her sport. She committed to Wisconsin as a high school sophomore. Her club coach had contacted the Wisconsin staff. They showed up to watch her and she wasn’t that good but was coordinated. They got in on her earlier than Illinois. Not sure how hard Illinois pursued her but in hindsight, Hambly missed a chance to add a great player. Can you imagine her with last year’s team? I love Fleming, but with Rettke added to that group, we might have won it all.

Do you know who is coaching that team in Japan? It was supposed to be Shymansky but I doubt if he went. Rosen was to have been the assistant - did he take over?
Never mind, this isn't the B10 team. Hinton is on that team, not these two.

Story goes she made her sister cry on the high school team.

Now she’s making opponents cry at the net. Lol
I know nothing about her recruitment by Illinois, but I think Tamas would figure out how to integrate her into the program.
Oh well, water under the bridge.

Not much coverage of CNT - Japan tour on USAVOLLEYBALL.com. seems JQ played sparingly but MA played every match. Glad to see our ladies get to see some great International competition. Cant wait for DB to set for the WUG teams.

Are we expecting the incoming freshmen to be here for summer school which, I believe, starts June 10?
