In case you guys hadn't heard, the match from Knoxville on August 30th will also be televised -- on the SEC Network. That means we’ll have to listen to those terrible SEC commentators who have the same monotone excitement for every play. BUT you will get to WATCH the match...the heck with the announcers. My mute button works well on my set.

Poor reporting. If someone wasn’t at the match, they would be thoroughly confused by seeing two men playing which is never mentioned by the reporter. Also, the score meant nothing as players rotated between the two teams constantly between almost every point. Again, not mentioned.

Wanted to offer a few comments about the scrimmage. I know nothing about volleyball so my insight is pretty worthless, but here we go anyway. Bruna looked good, had a nice block. Quade too. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I don't feel confident about replicating last season's success as I believe we are going to miss JP a lot. The new setters have potential but it will be awhile before they can match her accuracy and quickness. Also I feel like our first touches are still a little sloppy at times. I think they are a good team though, just need to find the best lineup and get some real experience. Other notes, Chris coached one team while Alfred and Jen coached the other. Teams rotated sides but coaches stayed where they were and would switch teams. Did not notice Rashinda but probably just did not see her.
On an amusing note, Chris challenged a call during one set and went to video review where the call got overturned. It was mostly a joke with the players and coaches playing it up. I didn't realize they would have a VR system in place for a scrimmage. Insert comment about VR being out of control here.

I’m guessing they had VR set up to test the equipment prior to the first actual match.

You seem to have good familiarity with Big Ten VB, especially in Indiana and Illinois? How do you compare Indiana - Northwestern and Illinois and Purdue? Hi EastcoastBaller! Thanks for the nice words. I'm only one season into following Big Ten women's volleyball closely and my understanding of the intricacies of the game is lower than that of a lot of the folks on VT- so take any input I have with a big grain of salt. The only couple matches I saw Indiana and Northwestern play last season were losses against ranked conference foes, and I was primarily focused on the play of those opponents. I'm definitely not qualified to weigh in on either of those teams. Illinois is the team I follow most closely and am most familiar with (and root for). My observations of this 2019 squad are limited to two spring matches against Purdue and last weekend's intrasquad scrimmage. I'd argue that until we find out what they're going to do at setter and which system they employ (5-1 or 6-2), it's premature to make sweeping predictions about this team- we need to see them go up against opponents. They have a lot of known quantities in their returning regulars from last season's NCAA semifinal team, so that bodes well, provided they stay healthy. In the two matches against Illinois this spring, Purdue looked pretty good. To my eye, Hayley Bush is a mobile setter who seems to have good chemistry with her hitters. They return three middles, including Blake Mohler, who is a force. Marissa Hornung supplanted Peters last season as libero and Purdue fan opinion of her is high. Newton and Cleveland both looked good this spring and it sounds like Newton is going to play six rotations this season- sounds like Cleveland is moving to opposite this year, filling Atkinson's big shoes. I wouldn't be surprised if Illinois and Purdue are close in the B1G standings, partly because Illinois lost its 4 year starting setter who was first team All-American, as well as losing its all-time leading blocker, and Purdue is returning its solid setter and talented front row and back row players. If Illinois finishes a little lower than they did last year and Purdue does as well or a little better than they did last year- that would have them fairly close. It's a bummer they'll only play once this season! *For other posters on this board: How do you predict Illinois and Purdue will stack up this season?

Raina Terry -- #88 PV senior Ace. I think we've got a diamond in the rough here!!! She's listed at 6-3 now. "Terry is growing into one of the top offensive forces in the country. Literally. She has picked up five inches of height over the past two years and may not be done, as her father, a former college basketball player, stands 6-10. Terry’s imposing size is matched by her imposing skills on the court. She has a cannon for an arm and a puts up a wall for a block. In the process of learning to play at her new height, Terry has worked extremely hard in the weight room and with a trainer to become an elite swing in both club and high school. She loves to play in a tempo offense and continues to develop her vast array of shots. In the AAU 17 Open championship run this past summer, she delivered nails to the hard angle offside zone, inside the 10-foot line. And when the defense was expecting the next one, she rolled a ball into the middle of the court, breaking ankles. With Terry in the front row, a defense can never settle as she’ll also reach high to place a ball down the line in the corner or run into the middle to pull or cut a ball to the sidelines. Terry has recently started playing six rotations, which presents more problems for the opposition. She is beginning to dominate there as well, running killer pipes to any section of the court and developing a lethal serve that produces aces time and again. As Terry continues to solidify her ability to play all six rotations, the coaching staff at the University of Illinois, where she has committed, are licking their chops. By the time she arrives in Champaign, they could have an elite six-rotation stalwart with the ability of players 50 spots higher on this list."

Interesting what can be learned about an individual from seeing their game day playlist. Since I am almost seventy, I seldom recognize any of the songs on an Illini player's playlist. Here I know three from Broadway musicals ('Seasons of Love' from "Rent", 'Defying Gravity' from "Wicked", 'Waving Through a Window' from "Dear Evan Hansen") and one from the movie "The Greatest Showman" 'A Million Dreams'

They also rotated new officials in for every set with a supervisor looking fellow stepping in periodically to offer pointers.

My mute button works well on my set. I had a setup last year to mute the video and listen to Dave Loane online with an app to lag whichever broadcast was ahead so they mostly lined up. I'm really going to miss his calls of games.

I guess her string of injuries knocked her down this far on the top 100 list? This summer she played much higher than her ranking. But hey, the last time an Illinois OH was ranked around the 80s, it turned out very, very well. So hey, it’s just a number. She should be a joy to watch!!

I suspect that once past the top 10-12 there is not much difference in the top 100 or so. If early reports on this year's recruits are any indication, our staff is pretty good at identifying talent and recent history tells us they are pretty good at developing players.
