If history is any indication, the Scarlet and Grey game "should" be later this week, anytime between Wednesday and Saturday, and the new roster pics will get posted in the meantime.

Although I now realize that I might be a week off with my intrasquad scrimmage date prediction, as the season starts on Labor Day weekend this year instead of the week before like usual.

Mac Podraza was the only scratch for the scrimmage. Obviously that would be bad, but she didn't "look" injured, but what do I know. She was out there dribbling the ball between her legs during warm ups, so maybe she'll be ready to go by the opener. Or she could miss the season. Or anything in between, I suppose.
They tinkered with the line ups each set. The setter battle behind Podraza is what I had my eye on. Team Cecilia Rocafort won all four sets vs Team Becca Mauer, which was unexpected. Rocafort is a true freshman from Puerto Rico, while Mauer gained quite a bit of experience as an underclassman, due to the career ending injury to Hughes two years ago, and whatever was holding Dailey out through large stretches of last season. Neither quite displayed the Ninjutsu setter skills that Podraza treated us to in the Spring and early Summer (early enroll), but both appear to be perfectly serviceable setters if needed; inasmuch as they won't make a lot of mistakes. DS Abby Julian even did a little setting in relief of Mauer during one of their rotations. Julian is the grad transfer from Marquette that played HS VB locally at St Francis DeSales.
Are they good enough to sweep the Wolverines? Stay tuned.

Take this information for what it is worth. A couple of players from the men's team and friends of the women's team sat behind us last night. They couldn't remember if Mac had a concussion or mono. Either would explain why she wasn't a full participant without looking obviously hurt.
My thoughts of who actually played: S: I agree that Rocafort looked like the best setter who played. The Mauer team ran a 6-2 the whole time with Julian as the other setter. They tended to struggle more with Julian as setter, but Mauer didn't look as mobile with the giant knee brace.
L: Kylie Murr will start at libero with Hannah Gruensfelder as the first DS to be used.
MB: I think Lauren Witte looked the best at middle last night and will probably start with Sandbothe. Jordan Fry will still play because Geoff loves to pull players after a few mistakes.
OH: The three who played were Jenaisya Moore, Mia Grunze, and Gabby Gonzalez. Grunze and Gonzalez struggled with passing and when Grunze switched teams she only played the front court. Bia Franklin who played a lot of outside out of necessity last year didn't play in the front.
OPP: I think all 3 possibilities (Vanja Bukilić, Madison Smeathers, Adria Powell) struggled last night.

OSU's recent streak of tough setter luck began with concussions ending Maggie Heim's career. She was supposed to be the incumbent to AA Taylor Sherwin, but had to instead become a student-coach of some sort. At the time it opened the door for Taylor Hughes to enroll early, and go onto have two great years before suffering a career ending injury of her own as a Junior. Then Dailey missed a lot of games last year for whatever reason, after transferring in from Kentucky.
Was hoping that this would be the year that OSU finally achieved a little bit of stability at that position.

OSU sweeps Lehigh 17,20,14.
Starting lineup: S: Podraza MB: Witte and Sandbothe OH: Grunze and Moore OPP: Bukilic L: Murr DS: Gruensfelder for Moore & Halm for Bukilic in the back row
In the second set Fry replaced Bukilic and played OPP and also played the third
OSU cruised most of the match except for the first half of the second. We'll learn more against Texas Tech tonight, who swept VCU this morning.

OSU loses to Texas Tech in 5 (25-21, 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 12-15)
Same starting lineup that finished the 2nd and 3rd sets against Lehigh.
I thought OSU really struggled with getting kills from our M & Opps. The slide to Sandbothe seemed to really struggle as the match went on. Podraza had some setting struggles, you would expect from a freshman, but overall the team played pretty well despite the result. It's still hard to believe that Gonzalez isn't playing, but Grunze and Moore were two of the better players tonight. I wouldn't be surprised if the Opp position keeps having different players get a chance.

Really glad to see that Moore is producing right away. That’s a good sign and building block for the future. I think Mac and Murr are gunna be good too but need some time to grow and keep developing. Realistically I think this team is a year or two away from being competitive again. They really need Londot and Rader (and possibly a transfer addition) to get back to competing for deep tournament runs. Hopefully this is a year for lots of growth and getting the younger players acclimated to high level B1G volleyball.
Also, could they try putting Gonzales at opposite? I’d like to find a way to get a talent like her involved early on too.

Wow, Jenaisya Moore with 23 kills in the 4 set win. Hit .340, she’s going to be a cornerstone for OSU for the next 4 years.

I couldn't attend last night, but I finally got around to watching the replay. Similar lineups to other games. Camryn Moeller took over for Camry Halm as regular DS in the first set. Gabby Gonzalez played in the back for Grunze multiple times throughout the match and played in the front row for the whole 4th set. Another look that debuted in this match was Moore playing in the back row, where she made several nice digs, so she might start playing all 6 rotations. Moore and Murr are the standouts to me from the opening weekend.
Next match is the toughest of the non-conference playing at Pittsburgh on Friday night. The match will be streamed on Espn+

I personally thought Gonzalez had a lot to work on to be successful at this level, but I’m very surprised my Moore and a big fan. Happy to see Grunze shine. Murr digging lots of balls. Hopefully she’ll be a solid libero for a whole career
