JC has so much passion for volleyball! And to think he wanted to be a football coach! Thanks Terry for passing the baton to John! GO HUSKERS

Okay, this question is for the old farts from Nebraska's early John Cook years. (You young'uns can stay away.) I remember reading an article (2001-ish) from one of your local papers where it described many drills that Cook utilized. One of the passing drills involved tennis balls where players were thrown (manually or with a machine) tennis balls and they had to pass it to a target. I remember Laura Pilakowski was involved in this drill and the article may have some quotes from her. So, my question is: Did Nebraska have tennis ball passing drills at that time (circa 2001) or did I imagine this article? I have talked to a former Nebraska player from the Laura Pilakowski days and she told me she doesn't remember such drills. However, they did passing drills with those mini-volleyballs that the players used to throw into the crowd during player introductions (and bean some old lady in the face). They also had serving machines which launched volleyballs but they didn't use those a lot because they used volunteer male volleyball athletes who could whip balls at 60-70 MPH. But no tennis balls. But the former Nebraska player I talked to was a middle so she didn't do a lot of passing drills, so who knows. I have contacted Dani Busboom-Kelly via Facebook but she has been ignoring me. I've also put out a friend request via Facebook to Laura Pilakowski (now Laura Buttermore, a volleyball strength coach at Hastings College), but she has yet to respond to my friend request. Also, the article I'm thinking of is NOT this one: journalstar.com/sports/huskers/volleyball-preview-the-tools-the-huskers-use-to-train/article_9a9bcae5-e282-5834-b51b-4d802f6341d1.html

From that 29 second Nebraska summer work-out footage, I thought i caught a glimpse of Lexi Sun doing a lifting exercise. It would be real sweet(no pun intended) if LS could do all of the lifting type of exercises as the rest of the girls. I believe the S&C program could be a difference-maker for her. I could be far off in that feeling. IMO

She does a little more prehab, mobility, monitoring strain and total workload, etc., and continues to do PT, but she's not really limited in any way. She's essentially full go like the other players.

If you would have taken a poll on volleytalk at the end of the month of October on who the final four participants would be in Minneapolis, Nebraska would have had very few votes. I would guess a few only from Nebraska fans. The leadership of Foecke and Maloney, the bull-dog growth of Hames, improvement of the second backcourt member, team spirit and determination and the exemplary coaching of JC plus assistants created the actual happening.
Illinois gave Nebraska all it could handle. We persevered to the final match. Stanford, uber-talented, was the overwhelming favorite to win it all before the final four began. It took five sets for Stanford to triumphantly deliver. A total points difference of just one for the amazing Cardinal squad. The difference was the serving differential between aces and serving errors between Nebraska and Stanford. It might have been John Cook’s best coaching of his career. Certainly equal to any other year. The girls should be very proud to come oh so close to the pinnacle of their sport. Well done and onward to 2019. I hope the Big Ten, especially Nebraska, doesn’t cede the 2019 national championship to the overwhelming favorite, the Stanford Cardinal. The four returning all-Americans, overwhelming best recruiting class plus Gates equals a prohibitive favorite. The mere mortals, among the other top teams, have long odds to overthrow the reigning national champions. But that is why you play the games.

Huskerjen, thanks for the reply. I kind of thought she had a disk problem that could only be totally fixed by surgery. Otherwise, she was a time bomb that could detonate at any time. I hope she, and the other girls, stay healthy and maximize the physical gains for this summer conditioning leading up to practice.
