I think Miller-Ah Sue looks good ... Nice back row swing a few seconds ago

Why is she giving the Shaka sign? Or is that supposed to be a “Y”? If so, why is the Shaka sign the same as the “Y” sign?

BYU players and students have used the shaka as a Y sign for a while. I think Hawaiian and Polynesian players on the football team popularized it This is a pretty interesting question. When I was in college at BYU about a decade ago, I don't recall the shaka sign being prevalent among the students in general. However, I did some research, and according to these two articles ( www.ldsliving.com/Did-You-Know-a-Mormon-Hawaiian-Came-Up-with-the-Hang-Loose-Sign/s/82807 ; magazine.byu.edu/article/handy-way-rep-y/ ), an LDS person in Hawaii named Hamana Kalili originated the sign due to losing his index, middle, and ring fingers in an accident at a sugar mill. It seems that Kalani Sitake, who spent some of his younger years in Hawaii, is behind its more recent popularity at BYU. And as Sitake points out, it's also the symbol for the letter "Y" in sign language, so if anything, I'm surprised it wasn't popularized earlier.

Nice. Wouldn’t be surprised to see BYU use her as a RS.
