Why change sides of the court when 1) the nets the same height on both sides 2) no sun or wind interference
Why do players stand instead of sit on chairs during play Most indoor sports sit on chairs aka (“ bench warmers)
Don’t think double touches should be called. Very hard to determine and I don’t really think it’s that important except to set aside one setter vs another. The most important thing is to present the ball in a proper position to your hitters.
Finally got this off my chest after all this time. What’s your take on it

So you can watch both teams instead of just one/so that you can watch the home team even if you don't get a seat on "their" set 1 side.
So that they can really get after it with their cheer routines that look adorable and keep the energy up.
So that some eye sole can yell "DOUBLE!" into your ear every 15 seconds.

They should do away with switching sides in g3 in club. Unnecessary and more of a pain with the parents that insist on switching, too.

I have been in gyms where the air movement is mostly in one direction. Also, you can't be sure that the "home" crowds will behave themselves when the "away" team is on their side.

I can think of at least one D2/D1 Men gym with a large, very bright scoreboard in one end zone... agree on the doubles....everything made with one playing action going to a teammate should be legal, IMHO.

The OP raises some good points, but I think the reasons for switching sides are pretty obvious.
And many sports do it.
Football. Basketball. Hockey. Tennis. Lacrosse. Sex. Badminton. Water polo (if you can call that a sport).

Why do players stand instead of sit on chairs during play Most indoor sports sit on chairs aka (“ bench warmers) That's actually a major reason why they stand. Volleyball and basketball are often played in the same gym on the same court. Many college volleyball players were dual volleyball/basketball athletes in high school. Thus, it becomes important for volleyball to have a distinct identity from basketball, especially since basketball is so much more popular. This also partly explains why volleyball players wear spandex: if they wanted to wear basketball shorts, they would have chosen to play basketball instead.

Can I dig up a blocked ball near the net and then hit it over? Those are just doubles, with a longer-than-usual time between contacts.

It is impossible for players to contact a ball with two hands and it not be a double. Those are also doubles, with shorter-than-usual contacts. Call what you can see. Don't call spin.

Washington's gym, Hec Ed Pavilion, has some high, westward-facing windows. Early in the season I have seen the sun shining in through there right onto the court. I don't know for sure, but I think it must cause some issues for the team in the eastern court that faces those windows.

If you're the last player to touch the ball before it hits the ground, the other team gets a point. Weird.

I don’t mind the switching. Except during the deciding set. One team gets to pick serve/receive and the other team gets to pick side at the coin flip. If the sides are different make that a strategic decision.
Don’t think of doubles in terms of top level teams. Think of the balance of the game played at a normal level. Barely watchable high school varsity.
Taking away the double takes away much of the skill of the game.
Take away doubles and so much will become back yard picnic volleyball.
