Fired? Do you mean removed from the team now, the next 60 days, and a replacement brought in by spring to run the team for the next two years with an option for the next quad based upon performance? Or some one we hire in the spring to a six year contract? Do we need a General Manager as well as a head coach to completely reorganize the National Team process more in line with say a major league baseball team with very active management of the pipeline below the A team? The U-teams and possibly organized B and C squads. Why not sponsor a Club team in Europe like the Club Italia Crai in the Italian Serie A league. This is the Triple AAA team for the Italian NT and it's the reason they are going to contend for the next several quads. Their pipeline is loaded with potential. Germany has a very flexible foreigner limit that would allow for a US funded team staffed with US players and a US coach. The German league is at a level for our right-out-of college NCAA players. We could adopt a city near our overseas German bases. Europeans like good volleyball and American players are well liked overseas. A friendly American approach might be attractive to a small town with a nice arena but no sponsors for women's volleyball. Europeans understand our love for NCAA volleyball supersedes any chance for a pro league here. The German leagues, Alliance MTV, is already jokingly referred to as the American team with four US starters and in cases where Maddy Bugg starts, five. Wilhite, McCage, Rivers, PTapp, Bugg. www.stuttgarts-schoenster-sport.de/team/spielerinnenWe are certainly currently at the risk to be outcoached by several other NT's so the pipeline and player development seems really crucial.

Of course, simply firing Karch and replacing him is not necessarily going to suddenly transform the team. You guys are right it takes more than simply a coach change. As for having a general manager or sponsoring a pro club, sure, if it works. But more importantly, are there anyone at USA Volleyball willing to listen and try something new beyond simply a coach change?

I nominate Jim McLaughlin for the job. I think if anyone is capable of turning around a team in a short time, he's the guy. Hopefully his health issues have been addressed and that he would be open to it. I have heard him state that Karch is a friend so it would have to be handled right for him to even consider it.

I heard regular intercontinental flights are good for bad back issues...

Out of respect, I wouldn't fire Karch. Maybe just "fix the glitch."

Firing a coach does no good unless you have someone better in the wings ready and willing to coach. Some of these other ideas though, are pretty good.

It's much easier to conquer one of those small European countries: Estonia, Latvia, Denmark or Montenegro. We could call it New Crimea. Creating professional playing and training opportunities isnt the most pressing problem. The deficiencies start much earlier than that.

Why would you fire Karch? To me, he has proven his worth.
