CAL POLY will enter the 2019 season with plenty of experienced players. A total of five seniors and four juniors,...not to mention sophomore-to-be starting setter Avalon DeNecochea,...co-freshman of the year in 2018. It should be a smooth transition for first year HC Caroline Walters. Hopefully, TVW is 100% by the time the season starts, as that will definitely be crucial in Cal Poly's success throughout the entire season. Do you think the line-up will be: OPP: Torrey Van Winden OH1: Jessica McRoskey OH2: Nikki Jackson MB1: Madilyn Mercer MB2: Meredith Phillips S: Avalon DeNecochea L: Mika Dickson Adlee Van Winden was a huge loss for the stability of the outside hitter position, but in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Jackson looked decent filling in for TVW. I do think she had some nerves, and she lacked a bit of on-court experience, but I think she should be a good piece for this coming season. I'm a little more worried about Dickson filling in for Brouker because Brouker may have been a little under the radar, but she was a really solid piece in the back row. Dickson looked shaky at times the past season, so we'll see if she can step up. If not, Rose and Ungar looked good in their limited time last season, so maybe they can contribute at libero.

I am of the opinion that TVW would be the best option at OH1 with Davoracek being inserted at Opp. I would like to know what TVW hitting % was from the left side.It might be a difficult conversation with TVW after all her success at OPP. I think if she has any plans for an international career, a full season of OH would best prepare her for that . She is a tad small to play OPP in top international leagues and while her passing is not great its not horrible. Either way she stands to make a pretty good living if she decides to continue her career indoors. OH2 will be done by committee until someone shows they can grab hold of the position. Stivers, McCroskey,Jackson and perhaps a surprising Cavote who has shown some signs of being able to play at this level. The best passer will probably win the position. AVW is a big loss. Dickson has an iron grip on the libero spot but could stand some improvement with her serve consistency. Broker will be missed. Ungar and Rose will battle for DS minutes with both probably getting substantial playing time. Middles look strong with the 2 returning all conf. starters and a solid backup will challenge for significant minutes. Setters ability to connect will determine a lot for these 3. Don't see any changes at setter unless the starter has taken a step back. Hard to tell at this point. Reynolds can play and looked good in limited minutes last season. Denecashea (sp)ugg, Avalon is a big, physical setter that needs improvement in a number of areas but has shown an ability to execute in big moments. Don't know if any of the freshman will be ready to play right away. All the players appear to have been working hard in the weight room and look significantly stronger than last year. A tip of the cap to the strength coach.

Nice analysis from both,...kaipono & 642fiddi.
It was Maia Dvoracek (left handed) junior-to-be not Nikki Jackson that replaced Torrey Van Winden in the first round of NCAA's.
Dvoracek who has not seen much action played well. IMO, she will continue to improve and challenge for OH playing time.
Finding someone to replace Kathrine Brouker (L) is the biggest huddle for coach Walters. Brouker was steady and extremely capable. it's probably Mika Dickson's job to lose.
The 2019 team (for now) will be the 2018 team less AVW & KB. Everyone a year older and wiser!

With that said, Cal Poly should have a solid year, and I'm looking forward to watching the team do well!

Who are the 2019 CAL POLY recruits? So far only Jordyn Amoy, setter Top 100 Recruit from Temecula HS has been officially mentioned.
We are pretty sure there are 1-2 others,...unofficially.

Hard to say,...my guess little playing time this season,...mostly conditioning and learning the different schemes.

For the first year athletes that are not going to see lots of playing time and travel there's definitely an opportunity to cross over and play beach vb . No better time to check and see if you can handle the work load ( playing 2 sports ) then in your first year at college

Cal Poly Pre-conference Schedule:
8/30 vs. Kentucky 8/30 vs. St. Mary's 8/31 @ Utah
9/5 vs. North Texas 9/6 vs. Wichita State 9/7 vs. San Jose State
9/13 vs. Pittsburgh 9/14 @ Pepperdine 9/14 vs. Utah
9/19 @ Colorado State 9/20 vs. Oregon State 9/20 @ Northern Colorado
This is a really strong schedule for Cal Poly. Kentucky, St. Mary's, Utah (x2), Pittsburgh, Pepperdine, and Colorado State are all quality RPI-boosting teams (plus these are all NCAA Tournament teams). The rest of the field are also not too bad, and I think this will be an exciting season. I expect that the team should at least have a 7-5 record going into the conference season, but I definitely think it's possible for them to do better.

Coach Walters probably working with a schedule made 1-2 years ago. CAL POLY playing Pitt in Malibu for a little sweet revenge is one match I don't want to miss.
