Great start for the Big West, especially yesterday.
Concordia serving lights out, and LB struggling passing, down significantly each set, and grind out a sweep.
UCI, the story of the night, facing a razor-close sweep to Loyola...and possibly looking at the potential real possibility of an 0-3 trip to the Midwest, and killing their at-large resume. Instead, they salvage a huge win, which given they now have to face Lewis which after a 5 set multi extra-inning match on teh road two time-zones away is gonna be tough. Still, they are positioned to still go 2-1 on teh trip, and maybe 3-0.
then Northridge, down 0-2 to Harvard, come back to reverse sweep as well, so that's both SB & North who defeated the pre-season EVIA favorite. & Northridge looking much better than I expected, Kalchev is the real deal.
Big West. 7-1 after two nights,
the race for seeding is gonna be interesting, LB won't finish lower than 2nd possibly, but all the seeding is up for grabs, the tournement in Hawaii will be fantastic

10-3 after the first weekend
3-0 vs. EVIA 2-0 vs. MVIA 5-3 vs MPSF
the North loss to GCU stung a bit after a 2-1 lead.
observation of the night. UCLA had 31 serving errors vs. UCSD. SD had 19. UCSD barely won that single set, by winning 15 points, and getting the other 10 points on UCLA serving errors.
smh, serving and the men's game. wish there were some way to figure out that out for the betterment of the game. literally 30% of a match being serving errors, Imagine a Federer-Nadal match with 30% double faults !

The biggest race in the NCAA this year will be between UCI and Hawaii. ucsb and csun currently putting a beatdown on the top two teams in the mpsf. should be a fun bigwest battle.

I’m very glad BW tournament is in Hawaii this year, at least they have the home court advantage. With 5/6 teams doing pretty well pre-season, this season is gonna be a battle for that post-season at large bid.

Big West 5-0 so far on Friday
good win for UCSD to beat Sacred Heart on the road
SB headed to another epic battle with Pepperdine, tied at 1-1 going to the 3rd after SB stops the run of 4 straight Pepperdine set wins going back to Wednesday..
huge match for both teams, SB can make a nice statement for their resume with a win, and Pepperdine can make a case for the top MPSF team with a win.

Big West now 27-10 after a nice Friday, North came close to making it a special night, but dropped the 5th set at Dave Letterman U.
interesting, the Massey projections have the following teams between 4 & 6 losses:
Hawii, Irvine, Lewis, Loyola, Ohio State, UCLA, BYU, Pepperdine, George Mason
that's a log-jam at the at-large, as expected.
circle George Mason's game at Pepperdine in March, they have a soft schedule, but only the loss to UCI, and just beat Ohio State on the road. at the moment they are a conceivable 3 or 4 loss team and the 'latest' at-large spoiler to watch out for.
unbelievable still Hawaii only has 7 matches before their match at Irvine on March 1.......their scheduling is really proving to be extra difficult
basically, Hawaii's season is for all practical purposes is just about 2 months long...March 1 to May 1, really compressed....at least they should be rested! basically leaving Hawaii fans to sit around and speculate a bunch until then
and there's no easy solution out there - I think the Big West is gonna need to seriously look at some ideas....doing away with the 2 game back to back series, and go to home and homes, 4 conference home games is just bad. or maybe even a 12-15 game unbalanced conference schedule....with a conference tournament, unbalanced isn't that big of a deal. Hawaii simply needs more games, period, and these schedule gaps are glaring IMO

I'd be for an unbalanced conference schedule but against getting rid of home and home games because we still pay for those teams to fly here. Home and home games saves our program money. And we need all the money we can get because we ring up annual deficits with the Athletic dept and taxpayers are not happy with that. Maybe we can play each conference foe 3x?lol jk

There's not much men's volleyball can do except GROW THE GAME. And it seems like it is. Beyond Hawaii or the BWC trying to get more games in conference and out of conference, the following needs to happen:
1. The other BWC schools need to get behind men's volleyball. Cal Poly, UC Davis, UC Riverside, and Cal State Fullerton all need to consider getting men's teams. Honestly, if the BWC prides itself in being the first Division I conference to sponsor men's volleyball, then the conference needs to encourage their other schools to start programs. These are California schools after all. Cal Poly and UC Davis might have a harder time due to Title 9 (they sponsor football), but UCR and UCF shouldn't have a reason not to eventually.
2. Locally, Charlie Wade needs to continue to push for the Division II schools in Hawaii - Chaminade, HPU and UH-Hilo to consider starting volleyball teams. Again, there should be no reason the Division II schools in Hawaii don't have men's volleyball. These schools can eventually join the BWC as affiliate members in men's volleyball
Not sure if there's other Division I or Division II California schools the BWC could pick up. But these two things could help.

I'd also add that the Pac-12 has always been so close to fielding more men's teams, but Title 9 is always an issue. Arizona, Arizona State and California have all been thrown into the mix and have quality club programs. If the Pac-12 could sponsor men's volleyball, that would be a huge step in the right direction.
Title 9 is always the hindrance. Look how quickly Beach Volleyball has grown in just six years in comparison to men's indoor volleyball.

no idea why charlie wouldn't use the full 28 dates to schedule 3 other AWAY OOC matches, traveling out east or in the midwest playing against the bottom feeders int he miva or eiva would help unless charlie would be good believes practicing in home vs the A team and B team is more competitive than playing against other teams. Hawaii could probably undefeated in OOC but their good win away from home would be @byu.
