Maybe money is an issue. I don't know how this work but do host teams pay opponents to come to their place and play or each teams pay their own way to wherever they play? If UH is responsible for their own travel and stuff, then maybe its not a smart decision to fly to the midwest or fly east to play matches that do nothing for them.
Going to a tournament might be a better choice since some of the sponsors may help defray some of the cost. Maybe there are no tournament at this time so there is no where to go.
UH's schedule is load with tournaments already so they have a bunch of games in a row and then they have long breaks. They just had a tourney, they are gong to BYU for a tourney and will have another tourney(outrigger) later in the season.

We already have a trip out east 2x queens and st.francis from feb 7-9 with two true away matches, the following week it would have a been a good idea like what UCI did was to stay on that side of the country and a couple more teams like lewis, osu, gmu, etc than coming home to play 2 against lincoln memorial. It is what is but as of now UCI, Loyola and other teams have a major advantage in receiving an at-large playing quality teams on the road and thats the main reason we got left out last year and I hope it doesn't this year.

I don’t think Charlie is going to expect any at large bid this season. After the screw job last season, where we had all the advantages over Irvine....except geography.....and we still got screwed over, no way we will get any at large. The NCAA will find any way to leave Hawaii out. They will throw out everything in the book to not put Hawaii in.
Weak schedule, low RPI, no tough road wins, ugly uniforms, etc.....Only way for UH to get in is to sweep Irvine and sweep LBSU. Even then I think the NCAA will begrudgingly congratulate Hawaii on their trip to the tournament.

Just looking off the schedule it is obvious they are not depending on an at large bid. They want the auto and hope it goes in its favor come BWC tournament time in the Stan Sheriff Center.

Title 9 is the main thing holding MVB back. It's a really poor piece of legislation

UCSB hosting Loyola
it's early, but there are really huge huge implications riding on this match tonight.
before the MIVA starts, Loyola only has this match and then hosting UCLA next week to close out their western opponents for the year.
If Loyola beats both UCSB & UCLA, coupled with their win at home over Pepperdine, then the west has a huge nightmare on their hands with potential fratricide out west and possibly only one at-large for the western teams - as Loyola could realistically be a 2-4 loss team if they can win their next two vs SB & UCLA. & UCLA is looking like a team that will have trouble with Loyola
A UCSB win will make that Loyola resume more debatable, plus still keep UCSB fledging at-large discussion alive for some time as they'll be in the top 2 in SOS likely by end of year.
not to mention Zolg would be squarely in the NPOY debate if Loyola pulls out the next two matches

SB up 2-1 over Loyola
Loyola had their chances to close out the 2nd set and go up 2-0
& SB wins 3-1, after blowing a big 4th set lead but recover. Big Time win for SB and the conference.
Northridge blows a sizeable 5th set lead, as Lewis takes NOrth in 5 sets

in two weeks, SB has a chance to win the MIVA title outright and the MIVA autobid, as they are 4-0 vs. the top of the MIVA, and take on Ohio State in 2 weeks!

and now another early season match with huge implications
Irvine vs. Pepperdine
an Irvine win, coupled with SB's win over Loyola last night, would position the Big West well. Particularly for Irvine, having already lost to USC & Stanford, regardless of ranking they need to back up the Loyola win
Beating Pepperdine would be a big deal. They may very well win the MPSF, and the MPSF may be really chaotic as UCLA hasn't looked sharp, & USC and Stanford both may be better than expected and both beat Irvine. It seems some of the issues last year Irvine still dealing with, when they are good they have some unstoppable attackers, but they'll have receive/passing/setter inconsistency for long stretches as well.
having 3 losses before February was definitely not on the Irvine plan coming in.

UCSD 3-0 against GCU was a big win too. BW bottom dweller against MPSF.

Irvine tops off a big week for the Big West, with the win over Pepperdine
LB will be #1
people can sort out #2-4 with BYU/Haw/Irvine however they please. It's a difficult comparison since Irvine has played 9 matches and BYU/Haw 4/3
Stanford is an interesting team to rank as well, haven't played a road match
will finally get some more feel about BYU with them playing 2 at SB, and for Hawaii hosting Stanford. Big Big West vs. MPSF matches.

Big Big West vs. MPSF matches. ucsb is slowly in the radar for an at-large imho. if they can split the byu, ucla series and win the rest of their remaining OOC matches. i highly doubt it happens since i think they dont have the personnel to do so.
