Irvine tops off a big week for the Big West, with the win over Pepperdine LB will be #1 people can sort out #2-4 with BYU/Haw/Irvine however they please. It's a difficult comparison since Irvine has played 9 matches and BYU/Haw 4/3 Stanford is an interesting team to rank as well, haven't played a road match will finally get some more feel about BYU with them playing 2 at SB, and for Hawaii hosting Stanford. Big Big West vs. MPSF matches. ucsb is slowly in the radar for an at-large imho. if they can split the byu, ucla series and win the rest of their remaining OOC matches. i highly doubt it happens since i think they dont have the personnel to do so. every year plays out differently the MIVA, MSPF, & BIg West could all be logjams. even the EIVA could factor in... seems most teams will likely get some unexpected losses. to me, until a team has 6 regular season losses (more so out west), they have a shot. Cause 7 loss teams will be considered. and with a strong SOS (like SB has), can see more losses consdiered. heck, LB doesn't get to the meat of their schedule until late march, assuming they can take care of Ohio State & Penn State when they come out in two weeks

Really big weekend for the Big West coming up. Listing in order of relevance/competitiveness: #9 UCSB hosts #3 BYU for two matches. The Gauchos have played a challenging schedule with losses to #7 Pepperdine (2x) & #5 UCLA while BYU has yet to play a ranked team and, with just four games under their belt, are an unknown. Prediction: UCSB wins the first match in 5 and BYU wins the second in 4. Listing this above the Hawaii-Stanford match-up because if the Gauchos sweep, they become part of the at-large conversation before league play begins and Hawaii is in that conversation, even if they split.
#2 Hawaii hosts #8 Stanford. Like BYU, UH has barely played this year but they did sweep USC which is #15 in the coach's poll. Stanford has only lost to #4UCI and have wins over UCI, Ball St, Ohio State and Fort Wayne, all who have been ranked in the coaches poll. I think Hawaii sweeps with the first match going 5 and the second in 4.
#4 UCI has three games, against unranked foes in Charleston and Grand Canyon in Phoenix then hosting improving USC on Saturday. Prediction: Sweep. 3-0 over both Charleston & GCU then in 4 over USC, exacting their revenge.
#12 CSUN @ Pepperdine and hosts Princeton. The Matadors haven't done much since their big upset of UCLA. Obviously, the potential is there to upset the Waves. Regardless of the outcome of that match, Princeton is coming off a sweep of UCSD on Tuesday and will have just played at USC. Prediction: lose to the Waves in 4, beat the Tigers in 4.
#1 Long Beach in St. Charles MO for three unranked opponents in Lindenwood, Quincy & McKendree. Prediction: Combined, their opponents may take one set off of the 49ers.
UCSD hosts Concordia & UCSC. Prediction: Defeat Concordia in 4, sweep UCSC.

a Big Night for the Big West
5-0 so far with
North squeeking out a 5 setter over Princeton, & UCSD squeaking out a 5 setter over Concordia
Big West 3-0 over the MPSF, now see if Hawaii can make it a clean sweep for the day, up 1-0 over Stanford

Big West. 40-16
Big West is 18-10 vs. the MPSF so far, after a monster Friday
Massey Ratings now puts the Big West with 4 of the top 7 teams, with LB/Haw/Irv the top 3.
of course the Haw-Stan & BYU-SB matches could swing that some tonite.
still for Hawaii, gotta wait until March 1st for that first big road game to fully gauge this team - and it's interesting, after this weekend Irvine only has 2 more matches in February until the big Hawaii-Irvine game.

while UCI is putting the final stake in their comeback over USC
Big West. so far unblemished on the weekend. 44-16
2 more wins over the MPSF, so now 20-10 vs. the MPSF
if Hawaii completes the perfect weekend, things couldn't be more rosy for the Big West
the BWCT in Hawaii is gonna be a tremendous at this rate

Of course, that's months away and of course that won't happen because as each team loses to another, they will drop in the polls.

Big West deserves 3 spots in the tourney this year. well, that would be true if the tournament were to be held today. but Hawaii has yet to play AT BYU, and host Pepperdine, in additional to 4 road matches vs. LB/Irv LB has to play UCLA again. Irvine also has to play Pepperdine. Pepperdine in particular can play their way in to that at-large

Hawaii's matches at UCI will speak volumes in how far they will go this year. The Bows matches with Stanford were very entertaining, much more so than the Superbowl :-P

If Hawaii can split with both Irvine and LBSU on the road, they IMO deserve to be in the tournament.

If Hawaii can split with both Irvine and LBSU on the road, they IMO deserve to be in the tournament. it's the 8 matches vs. BYU, Irv (x2), UCSB (x2), LB (x2), & Pepperdine that will determine their fate. if they go 5-3 in those matches, they'll most likely be in even with a loss in the BWCT. 4-4 in those matches and a fifth loss in the BWCT semis could end up being dicey, depending on what other teams do.

Big West kicks off conference play with Irvine going to UCSD
Hawaii hitting an incredible 0.470 so far, LB @ 0.42
Hawaii #1 in hitting %, #2 in digs, # 2 in Blocks, & #2 in aces.....that's pretty impressive, even if only 6 matches so far
the real interesting stat is LB is last in conference in blocks per set, even with a schedule that hasn't been too demanding. Some of that is their hitting and serving, but still interesting as the only change in the front line was Huus

UCSD takes the 1st set vs. Irvine 25-23
just like last year, Irvine really struggles to be consistent
