I caught up with some of the matches at the Grandview Tournament and Ambrose got rolled by UC Merced and Ottawa. The Bees really struggled this weekend. They'll probably be up and down all season.
I am watching the last set of Grandview vs UC Merced and Grandview has Chapman lined up as the OH2 playing all the way around. However they move him around quite a bit. In Serve Receive he hit outside and middle and then on Defense he was blocking on the right side. Watching this last game and after looking at some stats Grandview looks to be more of a 2 man team with Chapman and Chamone.
None of the other results surprised me.

I was looking forward to that GV vs. Merced match to get a gauge on how good Merced is. I guess not as good as I thought. I thought they would give GV a tougher match.

Teams that stood out to me: • Grand View did a pretty good job at solidifying their rank of #1. Their first game against Cardinal Stritch they were put through a little adversity, but showed that they are capable of playing from behind in the first 3 sets. Chapman seems to be the go to guy and can almost put the ball away every time. I was not all that impressed with Chamone against Stritch, but he was able to rebound againt Merced. The setter needs to be a little better at distributing the ball evenly so its not a one sided, give the ball to Chapman type offense. On the flip side though, it seems to be working. • Cardinal Stritch in my opinion is a very good team this year. I do not think that their record paints that good of a picture of their team. Sellers and Oliveira have pretty good arms as well as rocket their serves. I think they are a pretty well rounded team with the exception with a slight undersized OH2 and a setter who is actually an OH and is now setting. But I think that they could make a good push to making Nationals this year once their setter finds better connections with his hitters. • UC Merced I really enjoy watching this team play. Their setter, Steele, runs a very fast pace offense that is fun to watch. Webb, their outside, seems to be the only one that can really keep up with that pace though. Their OH2 and OPP aren't anything too special but are good role players. Merced has 2 pretty physical middles that are good players and their Libero does a good job at this tournament of passing and making clutch digs to extend rallies. They could possibly make a push for nationals but would be hard being that Benedictine is also in their conference. • Saint Ambrose is one of those teams that you would love to be on, but hate to play against. They play with tons of emotion. Not only coming from the court but also the bench. I enjoy watching these guys play as well. Clarke is their go to guy and moves around and hits from everywhere. Against Merced, in the first set, they showed that they are able to compete at a high level. But the next 3 when they were down their emotion fades and that is kind of what keeps them in the game. Hopefully that are able to figure some things out and make a push for Nationals. • Ottawa played really well. With the departure of Jacobs and Pope, I wasnt too sure what they were going to be able to bring to the table, but they showed out. Smashing a good Stritch team in 4 and beating Ambrose. Their wasnt really anyone that stood out to me, they just play really well together as a team. Beside their loss to Benedictine, their other 2 losses to Mount Mercy and MoVal both went to 5 and I could totally see them being 7-1 right now. Once again with Ottowa, MoBap, Park, and Briar Cliff, this division could be very interesting to watch being that I believe at least 1, if not 2 could receive a bid to Nationals. Meaning that 1,2, or 3 of these (very talented) could get robbed like Park did last year.

Merceds win over Ambrose looks a lot less shiny when they got destroyed by Grandview when a RV Cardinal stritch team competed with them.

I took a look at the Judson Early Bird tournament on Saturday as I wanted to see Aquinas play. I caught their match against Lindenwood-Belleville. They have a good mix of experienced guys (California juco transfers) and talented freshmen. They're really big across their entire roster. My impression is that they are a very solid, but not spectacular team. The guy I was really impressed with was their libero Josh Evers. He is very good. LUB is not a very good team, but they have some tough servers. Evers did a really good job passing some tough serves and neutralizing what could have been an advantage for LUB. I don't see a lot of guys like him in the NAIA. Very impressive.
I didn't actually see Aquinas play other than that one match. From the results of the tournament, it looks like they played distinctly inferior teams the entire tournament (and one of their Friday matches got cancelled), but they handled all their matches pretty easily. I don't see a lot of really tough matches for them on the rest of their schedule. They have to play Lourdes twice; those will be interesting matches. I would like to see them play Grand View or MoBap, though. Maybe in the championship tournament.
The other team I saw that looked pretty good was Mt. Mercy, who went 4-0, including a win over a nice Siena Hts team. Robert Morris really disappointed. LUB was better than I thought they would be. They drew the lineup of matches that Aquinas probably should have drawn, and only went 1-3. They held their own for most of each set with Aquinas and then took care of host Judson pretty easily. The rest of the field was pretty forgettable.

I could make a case for Mt. Mercy to get some votes considering they beat Siena Hts over the weekend. Also, add Menlo College to the discussion and that new Golden State Conference out west is going to produce a really exciting race the rest of the season.
