Indeed! Ottawa takes down Park in 4 sets. The 4th set was 25-12. I'll eat my words on that one. That is a bad loss for Park more so than a good win for Ottawa. Park clearly played down and that loss will come back to haunt them if they are considered in any at large talk.

Their early losses were to good/decent teams (Benedictine-Mesa, Mt. Mercy, and MoVal). They face Briar Cliff tonight, which should provide a challenge. The real proof will come next week when they face MoBap for the first time. I will acknowledge that, save MoBap, the level of play in the Am West/Great Plains/Kansas conference is down a little bit this year. Probably still the toughest conference, but by a much slimmer margin.

The top 6 teams are clearly gapped far ahead of the rest of the pack. Last year the overall strength of the nation was much more even. Now there is a clear divide in my opinion.

Life's record looks impressive and they should receive some votes, but the combined record of the 5 NAIA teams they beat is 12-27. They have a couple matches with St. Andrews coming up which should push them a little bit more than they've been pushed. So what the heck happened in the Life/St. Andrews match over the weekend? Here is the point-by-point for the last several rallies of the match in the 5th set: 5090 (3-2) LIFE serving : Serve by #13 PEREZ (LIFE) reception by #11 Huerta (SAU) Attack by #11 Huerta assist attempt by #2 Stark (SAU) dug by #4 DE LEON (LIFE) Attack error by #7 MORENO assist attempt by #3 LARROCHE (LIFE) block by #3 DeSouza, #10 Twigger (SAU) 5100 (3-3) SAU serving : Serve by #3 DeSouza (SAU) reception by #9 GONZALEZ (LIFE) Attack error by #7 MORENO assist attempt by #3 LARROCHE (LIFE) block by #2 Stark, #10 Twigger (SAU) 5110 (3-4) SAU serving : Serve by #3 DeSouza (SAU) reception by #3 LARROCHE (LIFE) Attack error by #7 MORENO assist attempt by #2 CORNIER (LIFE) 5120 (3-5) SAU serving : Serve by #3 DeSouza (SAU) reception by #9 GONZALEZ (LIFE) Attack by #7 MORENO assist attempt by #3 LARROCHE (LIFE) dug by #3 DeSouza (SAU) Kill by #13 Friedman assist by #2 Stark (SAU) 5130 Time out Time Out Taken By LIFE 5140 (3-6) SAU serving : Serve by #3 DeSouza (SAU) reception by #4 DE LEON (LIFE) Attack by #7 MORENO assist attempt by #3 LARROCHE (LIFE) dug by #4 Rodriguez (SAU) Attack by #11 Huerta assist attempt by #13 Friedman (SAU) dug by #2 CORNIER (LIFE) Attack error by #7 MORENO assist attempt by #3 LARROCHE (LIFE) 5150 (3-7) SAU serving : Serve by #3 DeSouza (SAU) reception by #9 GONZALEZ (LIFE) Attack by #3 LARROCHE (LIFE) dug by #3 DeSouza (SAU) Kill by #3 DeSouza assist by #2 Stark (SAU) 5160 Penalty card issued Red Card Received By #9 GONZALEZ (LIFE) Match won by SAU Match Over: 2 - 3 It looks like during or after the point that made it 8-3 St. Andrews, Alejandro Gonzalez of Life did something to cause the match to end with St. Andrews the victor. I've looked around for a report to explain the outcome, but there is nothing on either team's website. DakStats and the Life website show the 5th set score as 15-3 for St. Andrews. St. Andrews' website has it 15-0. As you can see from my earlier post, I was interested to see how this match played out, but I had no idea something like this (like what?) would happen. Any insight would be appreciated.

Looks like the Head Coach was getting upset with two calls that he felt were missed, and then on the change of sides, one of their players said something to the down ref, received a red card, and the coach decided he didn't want to play anymore. Not a great look. portal.stretchinternet.com/life/portal.htm?eventId=514380&streamType=video

Down Ref signaled a net call, and did not signal the up ref when he did not look at her. That could be super annoying especially in a 5th set. The 2nd call is close to be honest. That court can make it seem like the ball is in, but shame on whoever though it would be a good idea having green lines and half an inch over a green border.

Thoughts on this week's matchups?

Thoughts on this week's matchups? There are a couple key matchups this week to look out for. - Tonight (Tuesday), St. Xavier plays at St. Ambrose. St. Ambrose has been playing better recently, including taking MoBap to 5 sets last week. I would take Ambrose even if they weren't at home, but definitely since they are in the own building.
- Wednesday, MoBap travels to Ottawa. St. Ambrose may have exposed a little chink in MoBap's armor and Ottawa has played well recently. I think Ottawa plays well, but I still think MoBap wins. There are a couple other interesting matches: Missouri Valley at Grand View (GVU should handle MoVal pretty easily) and Lourdes travels to Siena Hts (I will take Lourdes).
- Friday, we get the first of two matchups between Aquinas and Lourdes. I haven't actually seen Lourdes play, so it's hard for me to call. I would take Lourdes because they are at home. If Aquinas wins, that should definitely validate what they've done so far. We also have the rematch of MoBap vs. St. Ambrose in Ambrose's house. This time I think MoBap comes out motivated and dusts Ambrose handily.
- Saturday, UC Merced goes to Hope Int'l. Merced is good, but not as good as I thought they would be. I thought they had the attackers to replace Cole Smith this year, but the really don't. Should be a good match, but I pick Hope. Also, MoBap plays at Clarke; MoBap easily in 3.
What do others think? Any other matches to follow?

could be an interesting week. I think Ambrose could win against St. X but i just dont know. Ambrose is so hit or miss and they are just not as good as they should be. I think MoBap should destroy Ambrose, but they should have destroyed them at home too and struggled. going 5 with a team like ambrose isnt something that the #1 team should be doing. I could see Ottawa having a shot at beating MoBap just based on the struggle they had with ambrose but MoBap should win against ottawa. GVU over Moval and Lourdes over Siena Then the Aquinas v. Lourdes should be interesting. I havent seen much of Lourdes but i have seen Aquinas a few times. Aquinas is complete and have solid weapons. If Lourdes wins then i think that people will need to look out for them because aquinas is legit. If aquinas wins it will just further solidify what they have done to this point. I honestly dont think the california conference is that good this year, Benu will likely take it and are a solid team, i just think the others at the top are just much better than any other team in that conference. Mobap easily in 3 over Clarke
