Back in the old side-out scoring to 15 points days, Nebraska was down vs. Penn State 5-11 in the 5th set of the NCAA Regional Final and came back to win 20-18. Does any one recall if that was rally scoring in the 5th set at that time?

Yes, it was rally scoring. Just watched set 5 on YouTube. Still gives me chills. Also, while I love VB at Devaney, the Husker HCA at the Coliseum was much greater IMO. It was soooooo loud in there at times.

I had forgotten how dominant Reitsma was. The second was everyone was serving such lollipop serves yet Fiona Nepo still got two aces in that final set. Serving didn't seem to have any real purpose other than to get the ball over the net so you could play defense. It is soooo much stronger now than then.

Is there a VB equivalent to this? I've seen some volleyball teams snatch defeat from the jaws of victory before, but volleyball sometimes seems like a sport where a certain lead late in a set is almost bullet-proof. This week in Eugene, the UO men's BB team, in front of 10K fans, had a 17 point lead with less than 7 minutes left in the game. Despite a UCLA surge, the Ducks still had a comfortable 9 point lead with 51 seconds to go. But UCLA managed to tie the game and send it to overtime. And then, in OT, UCLA scored the final 7 points to win 87-84. I don't know about the volleyball equivalent, but just one day earlier Creighton had a five point lead against Marquette with a second left and lost. Even had a three point lead with .8 seconds left and possession of the ball and lost. Whoa that sux! I remember when Reggie Miller scored 8 pts in 9 secs in the closing seconds to beat the Knicks in a playoff game. 2 3’s and 2 free throws. That was unreal!

Imagine Hancock's serve in that era...yikes!

That's really not all that shocking of a basketball collapse.

Is there another VB end-of-match meltdown that would take the seppuku award? I don't remember the exact details, but there was a match in semifinals of the Nebraska state high school tournament about 15 years ago. One team trailed something like 12-7 in the fifth set and came back to win, 15-13. And they went on to win the state championship the next day.

Coached there twice in the 90s, once in an NCAA tourney and another preseason match that went five...our players couldn’t even hear us at all from the bench. Even in our timeouts we had to basically talk in their ear.

That moment kind of reminded me this, but MBB Oregon was more of an implosion while WBB took it

This goes back to the sideout scoring era. Stanford-Ucla 1984 National Championship match. Stanford is up 13-5 in the 5th. Loses 15-13.

Wasn't a high stakes match or anything but a collapse nonetheless: 2008 USC @ Cal
Had to look up the box score and play-by-play to refresh my memory: USC handily took set one 25-18 and was up 24-17 in set two for a chance to go up 2-0. Cal comes back and staves off 7 set points to take that set 30-28. Cal then takes the third set 25-17. And if SC fans thought it couldn't get any worse, they got holdmybeer-ed and Cal won the 4th set and match 25-6.
