Long Beach Mizuno tournament
massey odds for night #1:
Texas State 58% over Long Beach 42 %
UCLA 60% over Georgia 40%
UCLA would appear to be the favorite going in, considering all teams and the first weekend, almost any result in any match will be interesting.
Tom Black regularly scheduled UCLA & LB until he left LMU for Georgia, so lots of familiarity there
hard to remember the last time (if ever) the Beach hosted a tournament and were underdogs in every single match of the tournament
if ever this program was gonna get a chip on their shoulder and start playing like they are pissed, now would be a good time to do it

Concerning LBSU this weekend. I can see them winning every match this weekend and I can see them losing every match this weekend. This wild swing is based on the team’s inconsistency from point to point and their tendency to give up large runs for no apparent reason.
The team still has two important starters out for this weekend. Once they get back the team’s play should improve significantly.
However, this is the most important out of conference weekend for the program so I hope the ladies come out focused and determined to go 3-0.

LBSU's 2020 Recruiting Class landed four players in the Top 250 of PrepVolleyball.com's Senior Aces. Two incoming LBSU players made it onto the Prep Volleyball.com Top 100 Senior Ace list. Mater Dei HS senior setter Mia Tuaniga may be LB State's highest ranked incoming recruit since the early 2000's. She is ranked as the 11th best overall recruit of the 2020 class. Kameron Bacon, a 6'4 middle blocker from Rancho Cucamonga, has been lauded as a "side out machine" and is ranked as the 91st overall, best recruit in the 2020 class. Just missing recognition outside the Top 100 were two LBSU recruits who made PrepVolleyball.com's Class of 2020 Senior Aces: The 150. Jaylen Jordan--5'11, outside hitter, Chatsworth, CA--is an athletic, All CIF, six rotation player whose grandfather is Rafer Johnson(1960 Olympic Decathlon Gold Medalist). Meauna Booth--6'2 middle blocker, Blue Springs MO--is an Missouri All State performer and made the AVCA Phenom list. Three other, high quality, incoming, 2020 recruits--not making the Top 250 Senior Ace list--include: Jenna Giambi--5'6 libero Upland; Kailia Lopez--5'9 OH Torrance; Andrea Stone--5'10 Opposite, San Juan Capistrano.

Sadly, I think that the latter part of your prediction--"I can see them losing every match this weekend"--may come true. Georgia, and UCLA, will be decidedly tougher match-ups tomorrow and Saturday night.

I don't know if Georgia will be tougher than Texas State
I think UCLA will be just too much talent for LB especially with how mistake prone LB is
I don't know, it's so tough to watch this program. Granted, there's a couple clear development needs. You can see the players playing hard, they just don't execute in the crunch well. really dominated Texas State for the better part of sets 2-4, but could not make a play to save themselves at then end of the 4th and 5th sets. Texas State made an adjustment for the back row and got more attempts out of it - and that's the ballgame. LB did show a bit of grit to stave off a couple of match points in the 5th (ala Georgia Tech). It's become really hard to stomach. I'm not sure it would make the team feel better, but I'd sure like to see Joy throw a clipboard down in digust (or just any sign of life/being PO'd with breakdowns) other than looking exasperated when they don't execute. It's up to the players to do something about it I guess.

Kinda worried how LBSU may end the entire preseason. They have been in every match but just cannot find ways to win sets. This weekend the team travels to Florida to play a pretty good James Madison team, USF, and top ten Florida. The following week the team travels to San Diego to take on a very tough USD team, a top program in USC and SDSU a team playing pretty good this preseason. Not sure how many wins LBSU picks up down the final stretch but it sure looks like a very tough preseason unless they start putting things together this weekend. I think the components are there but plenty of improvements still needed.

Maybe some current players will be shown the door and transfer out.

Now days verbal commitments include scholarship and non scholarship players. My quick take on the incoming recruits lead me to believe there are only four scholarship players among the bunch.

What's the status of a few of the players that were recently brought in like the Greek national team member, the transfer from southern utah and the transfer from Laramie CCC?

The young lady from Greece will probably not see much court time if any this season. Nelson the JC transfer broke her finger but should be back in a week or two and Canez from So Utah should be in the lineup this weekend if not next.

It would be great to see 6'4 Yizhi on the right side and Canez anchoring the middle with Norveel. I can see this team improving a lot by conference with the addition of Nelson back in the starting line up, also.

If recruits are as talented as this board is suggesting I don't see why this team can't be more productive. You can say what you want about BG, but he always delivered a competitive team.
