THe beach team is having Portuguese Horse Shoe tourneys fundraisers for basically loose change. They could definitely use all the help they could get! I know the team didn't get new uniforms this year. How much do their uniforms cost? Anyone from here willing to start a Go Fund Me for the VT's Wolfgang Grant? I am not familiar with what to do and am a little limited on time right now, but I would donate. I know they have a page on the UH site where anyone could donate as well. We could donate there and report back here that you donated, but I don't think we would have any way of measuring our donations. Also, when you donate on UH does it go directly to the team you want to donate to? Don't bother with GoFundMe. Give directly to the team(s) of your choice, or the general fund. These direct donations can be tax-deductible, as discussed on the site page (provided you itemize). Here's a link to the donation site: www.koaanuenue.org/donate
When you give, you'll get email confirmation of your gift, and my recollection is you'll also get a statement at year end indicating the total of your donations and the amount which should be eligible for tax-deduction.

Crazy to see Huddleston basically go from #6 to #1 (or 2), but I remember Kaiwi Schucht made a similarly huge leap and pulled it off. Similarly, I thought Dreeuws to move up in flights this year and she hasn't cracked the Top 5 yet. Maybe they can't find her a partner? Huddleston played 7 matches at #5 flight last year, but yeah spent most of her time at UH as #5 or #6 flight. Big leap this season if she is at #1 or #2 flight with Maglio. Schucht's progression was relatively gradual. She played at the #4 as a freshman, split at the #3/#2 flight as a sophomore, played at the #2 flight as a junior and #1 flight as a senior. I thought maybe Mickayla Tucker might have made this kind of a leap, but she went from #5, #4, #3, to #1 flight in her four years. Ari spent most of her time at the #4 and #5 flights. Same with Amy. Martin played #1 flight as a freshman as did Maglio. Monkhouse played #2 and #3 as a freshman.

If you plan to give a huge $$$ amount in the form of an endowment, you can have it named after you, which is always a PLUS.

I was just hoping we could have some kind of an indicator of where we were at with donations as a group to see if we could match the other grant the team received...more incentive maybe for some? What if we did a challenge here say a minimum donation of $25. or something and then once you have donated report back here? Any ideas noblesol ?

I give a C note more or less, to each of the UH volley teams, directly or to their booster club, that I post about here on VT. It assuages my guilty conscious for posting about them, or missing their matches, or sitting on my hands when I do attend. I don't know what motivates others to contribute, but I hope they can find something. I'd like to hear why others contribute, I think that would be interesting. But, I'd be more interested in hearing that they gave and what motivated them. I don't really care to know how much they give. It would be fun to see a list of givers here; I don't need to see the $amount.
On the subject of giving, recently I think it was Scoles that hit me up for some loose coins for the 'Big West' coin drive. Don't know what that drive raises funds for, or why it's the volley girls I see getting stuck with that each year. Unfortunately I don't carry coinage and she was parked right next to the turnstile just inside the SSC. I didn't stop to hold up the line, and gave her the wave off. But, if I'd of been approached later after sitting down, I would have come up with a bill. I'm a soft touch, just need to know how and when to approach me.

It was for the Hawai'i Pacific American Cancer Society. I think this is the first year, Hawaii didn't have the most money raised. (UC Riverside "won")

www.bigwest.org/story.asp?STORY_ID=20927Now in its 12th year, the Big West Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is prepped to begin the annual Coin Drive this February. The Coin Drive is a group effort as each school’s SAAC collects coins during the month of February to donate to a charity of its choice. Cal Poly selected the Hearst Cancer Resource Center that provides guidance, support and resources to patients; the Mustangs look forward to donating to a charity that has a direct impact on the San Luis Obispo community. Cal State Fullerton has selected Team Impact, a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with college athletic teams. CSUN will be supporting California Strong to help those affected by the Borderline Shooting in Thousand Oaks, the Camp Fire in Northern California and the Woolsey and Hill Fires in Southern California. Long Beach State will be supporting the “Beach Pantry”, the official food pantry for all 49er students who may be in need. The Beach decided to select the Pantry to support their fellow students and to recognize the role that access to nutritious food plays in one’s ability to excel in academics. UC Davis has selected the California Fire Foundation in the efforts to provide emotional and financial assistance to families of fallen firefighters, firefighters and the communities they protect. UC Irvine has selected UC Irvine Health - Breast Cancer Center who has an equal focus on breast health, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. UC Riverside will proudly be supporting the Riverside Community Settlement Association, a free youth after school program for low income families. UC Santa Barbara has selected Food From the Heart because they prepare and deliver healthy nutritious food once a week to those in the community who are dealing with major illness, surgeries, or failing health and cannot take care of themselves. Hawai‘i has chosen Residential Youth Services & Empowerment (RYSE), an organization who supports homeless youth in Hawai'i. The Big West Coin Drive has raised over $200,000 with an 11-year aggregate of $211,016.99. Last year’s total was $14,215.37, with UC Riverside coming in first place with a grand total of $3,600.10 raised. For the fifth year in a row, institutions will donate 100 percent of the funds raised to their designated charities. The top three fundraising SAACs will receive a cash prize to put towards their SAAC budget.

There are more ways to give back to the beach program other than monetary donations. For home matches at Queens beach (hint, this weekend) the team will always welcome anyone willing to volunteer to help set up and breakdown tents, tables, signs, chairs, etc...

Whoa....noticed a new name added to the roster. Marina Adolpho. Why such a late addition? If she was on the roster before the semester why just now? If she was not on the roster, why do we need an extra player with only one year to play one?
She is listed as a transfer from LBCC. She have to have enrolled at the beginning of the semester to be eligible to be on the team. She seems to have beach experience at a lower level.

I'm assuming she must be a walk-on, and it is surprising that she is coming in as a senior. At LBCC, it looked like she played at the 2's for them, but I really don't know if that translates to playing in flight #5 (since it seems that at least flights 1-4 seem to be pretty secure). Maybe she could play at flight #6, but Hall might want to try put in players who could get experience for future seasons at flight #6. Also, although it was relayed in a post earlier, per Cindy's blog, here are how the top 5 flights turning out: 1/2. Maglio/Huddleston & Martin/Ozee 3. Scoles/Homayun 4. Loker/Napoleon 5. Dreeuws/Russo Apparently, Hall is playing around with the top 2 flights currently, and he said that the lower flights are subject to change depending on practice. Overall, I think the team is shaping out to be solid, but there is definitely a lot of question marks. Personally, I think that the Martin/Ozee pairing would improve as time passes (as Martin continues to work her way from her injury), but as of right now, Maglio/Huddleston may be the better candidate for flight #1. I think Scoles/Homayun is a great pairing for flight #3, as it incorporates the powerful and athletic newcomer to beach volleyball with a beach savvy player. The Loker/Napoleon pairing will be interesting since neither have any experience of beach volleyball at the collegiate level (as Napoleon redshirted and Loker is a freshman), but I think they have the makings to do well. Dreeuws should be improved from last season at flight #5, and I am looking forward to seeing what Russo can do.

She played left-handed in the Fall against Cal Poly just as a pre-caution but she has played a lot of volleyball since and not having any issues. Napolean could probably play at the #2 or #3. They'll do alright.

Our Lea Monkhouse playing at the #6 for UCLA against Cal Poly. It's a tricky thing coming in and missing fall camp and then trying to find a partner (and of course there is always coaches' biases). Monkhouse finds herself in an unusual situation as she is not the best blocker and is more of an offensive defender. UCLA is deep with defenders. She is good enough to be playing higher but...it's possible she moves up the ladder a little especially if Muret and Carey struggle at the #5 spot. Of course, there are several outstanding Freshmen who are not in the UCLA lineup today. It's too bad because I heard Lea and Maglio wanted to play together if Lea stayed. They would easily be UH's #1.

I'm still wondering what happened with Lea. Yes, I heard on VT that she didn't take to the island culture. But I wonder if she had some sort of issues with the coaches.

I do wonder about that too. We have had many Canadians on this team and you figured that Lea would be able to lean on them to help guide her thru whatever issues she had. I noticed that fellow Canadian Jenna Benz have embraced Hawaii and seems to enjoy her experience here. We have Anna Maidment coming in next season. Indoor, we have Mags, Natasha Burns and incoming freshman Tiffany Westerberg. Viva Canada? ;-)
