I'm still wondering what happened with Lea. Yes, I heard on VT that she didn't take to the island culture. But I wonder if she had some sort of issues with the coaches. Yeah.... I do wonder about that too. We have had many Canadians on this team and you figured that Lea would be able to lean on them to help guide her thru whatever issues she had. I noticed that fellow Canadian Jenna Benz have embraced Hawaii and seems to enjoy her experience here. We have Anna Maidment coming in next season. Indoor, we have Mags, Natasha Burns and incoming freshman Tiffany Westerberg. Viva Canada? ;-) From what I know she really just wants to play with the "best" according to Lea. She wants to be an Olympian and thought she has a better chance getting there playing for UCLA. For a lot of players, UCLA is their "dream school". Personally, I think she would have been better off at UH and playing. I'm sure with the graduation of the twins, Sponcil, Muno and Carey she will get substantial playing time in her final two years.

Whoa....noticed a new name added to the roster. Marina Adolpho. Why such a late addition? If she was on the roster before the semester why just now? If she was not on the roster, why do we need an extra player with only one year to play one? She is listed as a transfer from LBCC. She have to have enrolled at the beginning of the semester to be eligible to be on the team. She seems to have beach experience at a lower level. She was there in the first week back in January when they did photos but was "trying out". I heard she was a decent player and was a walk-on (local player). She had to prove herself, so maybe that is why she was added late?

Its unfortunate that players think like that. IMHO, it is much better to find a place to play(thus improve) then to go to a top ranked team and "warm bench". I like what we have coming back next season(Ozee, Martin, Scoles, Loker, Napolean and hopefully Norene Iosia) and the highly touted girls coming in(Hannemann, Hardisty and Maidment). With UCLA graduating such a large class, I think UH can overtake UCLA.

I forgot Monkhouse will be returning to Hawai'i this weekend! I wonder if they will put her in at the #5 flight so she plays in front of her old team! Maybe at least against St. Mary's or Stanford. UCLA has the depth to give a few of their girls a rest over a tournament weekend.

If true re. Lea's thoughts on UCLA, it doesn't even make sense to me. I can't even name a successful pro beach vb player from UCLA from the last 10 years. The successful names off the top of my head are: Kerri Walsh - Stanford Misty May - LBSU April Ross - USC Nicole Branagh - Minnesota Kelly Claes - USC Sara Hughes - USC Sarah Pavan - Nebraska Among the Canadians, the only well-known names are the McNamara sisters who just recently completed college.

Monkhouse didn’t leave Hawaii because she was looking for a better program. Also, Lauren Fendrick - UCLA and 2016 beach Olympian. Also also, the McNamara’s are still at UCLA. However, I think it’s safe to say that UCLA has in recent times not produced the quantity and quality of beach players that it did throughout the 80’s and 90’s.

UCLA will continue to attract top talent just as USC did when they were on top. The McNamara twins are still at UCLA. A lot of teams are adding top coaching talent (several have added pro-players, Olympians, some Brazilians etc. to the coaching staff). I think this is a draw for a lot of players. A lot of players want to play for Rogers or Metzger. UH might have a tough time competing (similar to indoor) for top talent in the future. Teams that are winning, have the good coaching staff and I think, have the social media presence are going to continue to get the best recruits. Social media presence is important and will continue to be. Teams that do this well are at the forefront of upcoming players. UH needs to do so much better!

I remember a comment of yours from a while back and know that you seem to have some knowledge on the situation (you definitely have inside knowledge on a lot of things on this board). What I know are the comments and things said to former teammates on a regular basis throughout her time here before she asked for a release. There were hard feelings in the end, but the bottom line is she wanted better for herself and career. And she did think that was with another program. As far as the coaching, undoubtedly there are better coaches out there than in Hawai'i, but the players who stay like the program, the culture and understand the benefits of the program and what the program may lack. I know I was a little upset at first when she left and so were some of her teammates. We could have been a legit contender without losing one of our (higher flight) starters! In the end, she did what she wanted for herself and I think we all wish her well after everything is said and done.

Good riddance to Monkhouse. She appears to subscribe to the "Me not We" philosophy. I don't care how talented a player is. Hawaii doesn't need players that believe they are better than their team.
Good luck to the Beach Bows this season.

I think it would have been more accurate if I had said "different coaching" rather than "better coaching" - Monkhouse and the coaching staff weren't able to see eye-to-eye, for lack of a better term, and leaving the program may have been the best option for both sides. I was a bit surprised Monkhouse ended up at UCLA, though. We'll see how that goes.

They mentioned 3 of the 5 flights consist of players who are best friends in real life. Who are these 3?

Hawaii wins duel against Saint-Mary's, 4-1:
1. Maglio/Huddleston defeat Knudsen/Chase, 21-18, 21-14 2. Ozee/Martin defeat Bible/Calvin, 21-10, 21-11 3. Scoles/Homayun defeat Parker/Young, 21-10, 21-12 4. Napoleon/Loker defeat Kendrick/Laird, 21-9, 21-15 5. Cowell/Christensen defeat Russo/Dreeuws, 13-21, 21-19, 15-11
It's unfortunate that Russo/Dreeuws lost in 3 sets, but they are a team that will improve as the season goes on. Hopefully, they will be ready for the duel against Pepperdine later today.
