Wondered the exact, same thing. @ 5'9", she makes Meghan McClure (a generous 6'0") seem like a giant! In my memory, I do not recall such a short OH (since 1980's). Angie Pressey was 5-7 or 5-8 for Cal and was an absolute stud on the left. Misty May was also 5-9 and recruited as an OH for Long Beach even though she ended up being a setter. I dont think there is much doubt she would've been a standout on the left for Long Beach. Well, that seems to be ~1.5 notable short OHs throughout history. Thanks for sharing!

Not all that rare- recent prominent sub-6' OH's in the Pac include Cassie Strickland and Stevie Mussey at WA, Dicey McGraw at UCLA, Nji Nnamani at Stanford- and that's just off the top of my not always so dependable head.

I think the poster was looking for standout OHs 5-9 and below. Mussie/McGraw were both 5-11. Strickland is a good example (same with Demi Morales at Wisconsin). Did Nnamani ever get playing time as an OH at Stanford or was she primarily a DS?

For All of y'all: this was originally a point-of-discussion re: a 'husker commit being a 5'9" OH - who's been confirmed to be a DS/L, by NE fans - just a curiosity Q.

My gawd, it's time for one of these ... *Where is KK? And, Kubik and Fields are IMO clearly better than Berty. Yea this award, much like AVCA awards are also based on both individual and team success. Kind of like it's near impossible to win POY unless your team makes the Final Four. Assumption was the only team that had a more impressive year than Berty's Mater Dei, so I'm sure that played into it a lot.

In 2005, yes - otherwise she was a DS in 2006. She was getting kills and blocks in her very limited court time in 2003/04, so not DS'ing her first two years.

She got to square off with Pressey (39" vertical, if I recall) a few times, which was interesting to watch. Counting on some of the rest of you to come up with examples (come on, it's off season- better than griping at each other for imagined slights)- I remember WSU having a libero at something like 5'6" who hit at least one year, can't remember her name*, and I'm sure there are plenty of others, not to mention other conferences- I know there was a 5'8" middle blocker at one of the Texas schools who was pretty darned good. *Oceana Bush, that was it- 5'5", shortest I remember in the PAC. She wasn't awfully effective as a hitter, but she sure could dig.

Since the younger Nnamani has come up; 2005 (only year she was a major OH): 226 K (4th on team): 9 double digit K matches (w/ a high of 16); hit .500 (7-0-14) against WSU, .438 (8-1-16) vs Marquette; had 15 digs vs. UC Berkeley (then a career high). She was also an HM All-Pac10 Academic selection. She is now Senior Director, Sales Strategy/Operations, FourKites Inc., Chicago.

Just to ask about N. Nnamani because I wasn't following college vball from for a decade or so, does anyone know which two were on the left pin and the other on the right pin between Barboza/Richards/Nnamani until Barboza went down with a season ending injury? I'd assume following her injury, Nnamani and Richards were the OH's and Waller was back in the starting lineup at OPP, at least by the end of the season? ETA: Sorry, I know this is off topic, and likely belongs in the Stanford thread, but she was brought up and figured I'd ask.

Upon Cynthia's injury (at Berkeley; 10/21/2005), Jennifer Wilson came in for her, & went 3-0-7. Thereafter, Erin Waller started @ OPP, for the final four matches; Kristin Richards and Nnamani shared the OH load: w/ Franci Girard (5th on the team in Ks with 136) subbing-in/ alternating. Yes, this query Should Have Been in the SU thread.
