1992 UCLA. Undefeated and only lost 6 sets all year until the finals against Stanford. Still puts a smile on my face.

Would be interesting to read people’s thoughts on the best teams that failed to reach a championship match/final four. Hawaii 1995. That team was very good. To me personally, the 1995 team was better than the 1996 runner-up team to Stanford. They lost one starter in Jenny Wilton, but let me tell you she played lights out her senior season. Jenny Wilton definitely had a great senior season...she is one that should be mentioned in the underrated/forgotten thread

1988 Hawai’i They were the defending national champs; had reigning player of the year, Teee Williams; and lost to Texas in the championship match. Dammit! No one thought at that time that year in and year out, the Wahine would continuously fall short chasing that elusive 5th title.

When I read the title of this thread, I understood it a little different than the rest of you I guess. When I saw the word "never", I read it to mean, the best schools/programs that have never won a natty. Interesting to see thoughts on that

Stanford 1995
- Folkl, Sharpley, Wendel, Ifejeka, and more I can't remember even though I watched Texas beat them twice that season (once without Folkl, though)

And that was a big part of the problem IMO. The only problem with that Stanford team was the amount of unforced errors. They committed a lot of hitting errors, not to mention serving the ball out. So you really think it had nothing to do with the setting?

It's still so weird to think that Foluke doesn't have a NC ring.

Penn State with Zemaitis, lost to Misty May and Long Beach State. They were very good.
Ohio State in Laura Davis' senior year.
Minnesota with KBow and Taajtes.

Next tier would probably be Wisconsin and Illinois. I am struggling to come up with others. Edit: BYU, of course. I was thinking Power 5 (I'm an elitist jerk)

The Stanford team that ran into PSU and Nebraska 06-08 were really good teams and would win most years. Heck they outscored PSU in one of those years.

2018 NJIT (came damn close!). OH. Seriously? 1984 Stanford: were ahead of the bruins 12-4 in the 5th set (rally scoring, even though it was the sideout era). They gave up 11 straight points; lost 15-13. Two other SU teams qualify: the 2006 + 2007 squads. Although I am describing some tight, close, heartbreaking losses, they have won some nail biters too -- particularly-especially in Regional Finals, along w/ a few Semis and a couple of Finals -- & 8 NC's, in total. I do not dwell on the past: with the incoming recruits and the core returning! I dwell on the future, BUT those who do not learn from history, or study it, are more likely to repeat past mistakes.

I wonder if the original intent of this question was "best teams" or "best programs"- the use of the word "never" would seem to indicate the latter- I'd have to go with Minnesota, Florida, maybe Oregon.
