Sara Kovac from LMU and Sarah Chase from SMC are playing for Canada this summer in the Pan Am Games in Peru. Good luck to them.

FYI, Allison Stapleton, reserve MB for BYU has decided to do Track and Field. Her dad and sister hold the school records for men’s and women’s high jump. Thank you for the explanation. I know she got some playing time last season, and was wondering why she was off the roster. Also, apparently UOP's athletic website is being completely re-vamped, and is currently unaccessible for another week. That is a very odd way to transition between websites...you generally keep the old one up and running until you roll out the new one. At any rate, no 2019 schedule posted for them anywhere.

Except for Illinois, it's a very easy pre-conference schedule, like many other WCC schools have scheduled this fall. Also, I expected a little more 'bang' from a website that had to be completely disabled for more than a week to be re-built.

There have been some interesting former-player-turned-coach hires in the WCC for next season. Several were former WCC players at a different program. Former Santa Clara star OH Nikki Hess has moved up from SCU volunteer coach to a first assistant coaching job at San Francisco State, and SCU has brought in former Illini DS, Danielle Davis, as volunteer coach. www.santaclarabroncos.com/sports/w-volley/2019-20/releases/20190711sbmlctPepperdine has added former Wahine libero, Tara Hittle, as assistant coach. pepperdinewaves.com/coaches.aspx?rc=347&path=wvballPacific hired former San Diego standout MB, Katie Hoekman, to their coaching staff this season pacifictigers.com/coaches.aspx?rc=605&path=wvball(Pacific now boasts a roster of 13 players!) Former Oregon MB, Kacy Nady, has joined the San Francisco coaching staff as second assistant usfdons.com/coaches.aspx?rc=743&path=wvballFormer St. Mary's MB, Meg Burton, is now an assistant for University of Portland. portlandpilots.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1911&path=wvball Gonzaga hired former Pepperdine star libero/beach player, Stevi Robinson, as an assistant. gozags.com/coaches.aspx?rc=247&path=wvball (Three of the new hires were MB's and three were liberos in their playing days.)

I watched a couple of the matches, hoping to see RJP and Plummer playing, but in those matches, they started veteran players instead. Never got to see RJP, but the article says: Jones-Perry’s top performance of the event came against Trinidad & Tobago when the West Jordan, Utah, native led Team USA with 14 points on 12 kills, a block and an ace.

^Link didn't work for me, but here's the article (and also I don't think it was ever mentioned about SMC head coach Rob Browning being the head coach of Team USA for the Pan American Cup earlier this month, and also apparently for the Pan Am Games in August): smcgaels.com/news/2019/7/16/womens-volleyball-vb-calvin-chase-sign-professional-contracts-in-europe.aspx?path=wvball"MORAGA, Calif. – Recent Saint Mary's volleyball alumnae Lindsey Calvin and Sarah Chase have signed contracts to play professionally overseas in both Switzerland and Hungary respectively. Calvin will be playing for Genève Volley in Geneva, Switzerland on Equipe F1-LNA. La Ligue Nationale A is the league that the top teams in the country play in. Calvin played all four yours at SMC and finished her career being named to the WCC All-Academic Team in three-consecutive seasons. In her final season of beach, she went 20-8 in the No. 2 position. In fact, she went 14-2 in March with big wins against No. 12 Cal and No. 13 Stanford. She also represented the Gaels at the USA Beach Volleyball Championship and made it to the Round of 16. Chase will be playing for Újpesti Torna Egylet (UTE) in Budapest, Hungary. The team is a sports club that is a hub for multiple sports in Hungary. Chase is another four-year volleyball player at Saint Mary's and was named a WCC Honorable Mentiona after the 2018 indoor season. She was also a part of the WCC 2019 beach volleyball Pair of the Year along with Lindsey Knudsen. The duo went 24-5 in the No. 1 position for the Gaels, defeating seven ranked opponents. She also received her second First Team honor and she was on the second team in 2017. She is currently training with the Canadian National Team in Richmond, British Columbia who will face head coach Rob Browning's USA team in the Pan American games in August." *Of note, LMU grad, Sara Kovac, as well as SMC's Sarah Chase, are on the Pan Am Games roster for Canada. Former BYU OH, Alexa Gray, has been the "go to" hitter for Canada at the Pan America Cup earlier this month. (I don't believe either Kovac or Chase made the Pan Am Cup roster.) ** BYU MB, Heather Gneiting, has been the starting MB for the USJNT in all of the U20 matches I've seen so far.

Per the spreadsheet on D1 transfers, the following players are no longer on the 2019 rosters: Erin Anthony, Jr. setter, San Francisco. (ran a 5-1 for the Dons as a freshman and was half of a 6-2 as a sophomore). Smallish but spunky setter. Edit: has returned to home state of Texas, not clear if playing volleyball. Also for USF, Tanner Pemberton and Saige Madden no longer on the roster. For BYU, Emily Lewis-Bushman (SR MB/Opp) and Allison Stapleton (Jr MB) are no longer on the roster. (Edit: Stapleton going to Track and Field only) Offseason transfers out of the WCC included: Kaitlyn Lines, OH, Pacific to Marquette Izzy Guzik, OH, Portland to Ole Miss Cali Thompson, Setter, Portland to UCLA Carly Lowry, OH, San Francisco to Arizona Beach Transfers IN included: Kennedy Kaminsky, MB, E. Wash. to Pacific, Kaelyn Saeler, MB, Bucknell to Pacific Jessie Brigham, L, Boise St. to Portland Callie Whitney, L, Salt Lake CC to BYU Others? Some former WCC players heading to Beach programs: Former Pepp setter, Blossom Sato, is going to grad school and playing Beach at Hawaii Former San Diego MB, Addie Picha, to UW for Beach (grad school) San Diego RS JR, Allyson Eylers, transferring to Arizona State for Beach San Francisco OH, Carly Lowry, transferring to Arizona for Beach No longer on roster: Pepperdine: Sr Jaiden Farr, Jr Grace Nielsen, Jr Julia DiBona Addition to Transfers in: Camryn Tastad, Soph L from Oregon to San Diego Tayah Mahi, RS-Fr S from UNI to Pepperdine Alexis Keith, RS-Fr OH from Eastern Washington to Pacific No transfers in or out for Gonzaga, St. Mary's, LMU or Santa Clara?

Borrowing bluepenquin 's analysis of WCC schools in his 2019 "top 20 mid-major teams" predictions. Bluepenquin's predictions:
1) BYU: The top mid-major last year is the best bet to finish on top this year. Jones-Perry and Haddock are big losses, but the other 5 starters return along with one of the top recruiting classes for the year.
7) Pepperdine: Pepperdine was Pablo #24 last year and returns 6 of their 7 starters - losing their setter and replacing with their prize recruit Isabel Zelaya. This team could be very good.
8) LMU: LMU hasn't posted any 2019 roster, so I am assuming they only lost their graduates - which would be 5 of their 7 starters returning. They have a solid Freshman class and this team usually does well.
10) San Diego: San Diego losses 3 of their 9 starters - with transfer Tastad being an easy replacement at Libero and top recruit Grace Frohling being the other.Read more: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/77611/top-mid-major-programs-2019#ixzz5uXI8CFK5I also think these are the expected top 4 teams in the WCC. I think Pepp, LMU and USD will be closely competitive with each other. They have all had good recruiting success. If Pepperdine is as good as predicted, this is a major climb back for them after 6-ish subpar seasons. San Diego will have to fight for a spot near the top. Looking forward to having some jostling for top position. I do not think that BYU will run the table this season. (And Saint Mary's has probably lost too much to graduation (numerous 4 year starters) to be as competitive this season.)

Agreed, and I really think Pepperdine is going to do some damage this year again. They were a better team than both USD and LMU last year and I think they will build on that this season. BYU is definitely the favorite but any of the 3 teams behind them have the ability to take them down if they take them too lightly. BYU does have to find the mixture to replace RJP and Haddock but they have the OOC to figure that out and should be on all cylinders by the time WCC starts. LMU loses their top scorer from last season but will be bringing back a healthy Megan Rice and Jesse Pritchard,. who redshirted last season, as an additional setter to AA Tess Reid. They also have the #23 recruiting class that includes two Gatorade State players of the year. USD is always tough and after the rough start to the season last year still found a way to win down the stretch, but couldn't beat Pepperdine, who again, just may have a shot at challenging BYU for the top spot if they can get their new setter clicking by the time WCC play begins.
