Challenge on the 4th point of the fifth set. You better be damn sure you know it was in. Good challenge. Tied 2-2.

The teams that we all keep feeling should be in solid 3rd and 4th place behind BYU and USD seem to be having so many struggles. I understand LMU with a slate of injuries, but really no excuse for Pepperdine not dominating some of these matches. Or, perhaps, outside of BYU and USD, the WCC is just a general mess... Okay, I wanted to wait to make sure LMU didn't actually lose before replying. Since they won (barely), I'll proceed. So Pepperdine and LMU haven't actually lost to anyone other than BYU, San Diego or each other yet in conference. Granted, Pepperdine seems to be spotting everyone except Gonzaga a set, and LMU hasn't even beaten Pepperdine (though they did push BYU to 5 sets in Provo). Pepperdine also pushed San Diego to a fifth set on the road. The real issue is that the non-conference for basically the entire WCC (except for BYU, and even their performance is down a bit from last year, though that is a high bar to clear) was extremely lackluster. At any rate, I think if Pepperdine can avoid losing to anyone other than BYU or San Diego, they'll have a pretty good shot at getting in as an at-large, but I don't think there is much margin for error. LMU might also have a chance, though it's not quite as good, as their RPI is lower. Ultimately, I think it will be a three-bid conference with Pepperdine getting the third bid, but two is a very real possibility.

No lead seems to be safe for San Francisco. What do you see as the issue? Is it the players? Is it the game plan? Is it the coach?

In the other match last night, Santa Clara swept Gonzaga -17, -18, -17. I’m surprised Portland and USF match was so close, although USF can provide a tough environment for visiting teams.

Who do you think was player of the match for USD tonight? Such a team effort. I could go with Newsome. She set a brilliant match, 5 kills (.556), plus 13 digs. But how about our little?! Annie Benbow outdigging Mary Lake 19-22, and when did her serve become so lethal? She served ‘em tough and passed a good game too.

And was thinking that USD finds littler (but very quick) littles than most teams. Benbow dug a hard ball that lifted her completely off of her feet to the ground. That was a great effort by USD. They looked very confident throughout the match, which is hard to do at Smith Fieldhouse. Frohling has been an important contributor to USD's success since she was inserted into the lineup. (Wiblin, who was touted pre-season as the go-to hitter by Coach Petrie, has turned into kind of a non-entity...) Jacobsen's quick attacks continue to be a key to USD's success also. And Turner has come a LONG way since the beginning of the season! The other 8 WCC teams are playing this afternoon: 12:00 pm: LMU at Pacific 12:00 pm: Portland at Santa Clara 12:00 pm: Gonzaga at San Francisco 1:00 pm: Pepperdine at St. Mary's

Benbow has been a problem server for BYU for several years, so I was very apprehensive every time she got up to serve. I was hoping against hope that somehow the passers would not be worse than last year, but it was not to be.

Either Gonzaga or San Francisco is going to get their first conference win today as they face each other. After San Diego won the battle of the unbeatens last night, who will win the battle of the non-winners. My money's on San Francisco? Gonzaga is just very lackluster this season.
