Is that setter of the year award new?! I don’t recall haddock-eppich getting it last year? Correct. Setter of the year is new. "Libero of the Year" rather than defender of the year is new. Second team is new.

Good to see added award categories. The WCC is behind on that, they should have more than player of the week. Should have the same awards as the Power 5 conferences- Offensive, defensive and frosh.

HONORABLE MENTION Santa Clara: Allison Kantor, Michelle ShafferShaffer absolutely robbed!! The disrespect! 1.47 kps 6.08 assist/s 0.43 ace/s 2.50 dig/s 0.73 blk/s Is anyone in the conference serving better than Shaffer? Those blocking numbers are really good for a S/OPP. No player in the WCC can match Shaffer's all around contributions and that SHOULD have been recognized. It's okay - homegirl is a Fantasy Champion and hopefully they make a run in the NIVC! <3

Not that that matters for stats, but just thought I would add that tidbit.

Some of the awards tend to go based on a player's previous years' history, even when they don't have a fantastic senior season. Reid (6.81 assists/set, .22 kills/set hitting .134 in conference) and Hoeft definitely did not have terrific senior seasons, but were recognized for previous contributions, I think.

So, both seeded BYU and conference champ San Diego were swept in the second round. A disappointing finish for the WCC this season. Santa Clara was the only other team to join post-season play, and lost in the second round of the NIVC (after losing their one remaining setter to injury early in set 3, and using an OH/Opp with no setting history to set the remainder of the match). Pepperdine apparently elected not to play in the NIVC.
Final conference standings:
SCHOOL CONF CPCT. OVERALL PCT. STREAK 1 San Diego 17-1 0.944 25-5 0.833 L1 2 Brigham Young 16-2 0.889 26-5 0.839 L1 3 Pepperdine 14-4 0.778 18-11 0.621 L1 4 Santa Clara 10-8 0.556 21-12 0.636 L1 5 Loyola Marymount 9-9 0.500 15-15 0.500 L3 6 Saint Mary's 7-11 0.389 11-17 0.393 W2 7 Pacific 5-13 0.278 13-17 0.433 L4 8 Gonzaga 5-13 0.278 11-19 0.367 W1 9 San Francisco 4-14 0.222 8-21 0.276 L2 10 Portland 3-15 0.167 11-18 0.379 L9
Final Pablo Rankings: (Teams in same order except BYU on top, and Portland finished ranked slightly above San Francisco)
West Coast Conference:
13 BYU 6720 14 San Diego 6715 36 Pepperdine 6185 65 Santa Clara 5770 68 LMU 5725 93 Saint Marys 5490 123 Pacific 5235 151 Gonzaga 5075 168 Portland 4970 175 San Francisco 4925 90.6 Average 5681
I think this puts the WCC Thread to bed for the 2019 season. If there are off-season roster changes, someone can start a new 2020 thread.
Onward and upward...

Disappointing to be sure, but in line with the overall season, in which I think the WCC was down virtually across the board. Oh well. On to next year.

I put the 2019 thread to bed too early!
Lots of WCC players were named to AVCA All-Region teams this year:
Pacific North First Team: Taylor Odom, MB, Santa Clara
Pacific South First Team: Heather Gneiting, MB, Mary Lake, L, McKenna Miller, OH from BYU, Megan Jacobsen, MB, Anna Newsome, S, from San Diego, Tarah Wylie, MB from Pepperdine
Pacific South Honorable Mention: Kennedy Eschenberg, MB, BYU, Shannon Scully, OH, Pepperdine, Grace Frohling, Opp, San Diego
Pacific South Freshman of the Year: Grace Frohling, San Diego.
Congratulations to all of these players. This is a LOT of All-Region award winners from the WCC.

Looking forward to next year, it looks again like it will be a 2 team race for the title, with USD probably the favorite over BYU.
USD has a great nucleus coming back with Lukes, Frohling, Thayad, Turner and Benbow. Lukes may be the most lethal hitter in the conference, averaging 3 kills per set hitting .285 as a sophomore. A lot will depend on the new setter.
Hopefully Pepperdine, LMU, St. Mary's and Santa Clare improve. The WCC should be one of the elite volleyball conference in the country.

There are some excellent Student-athletes on this list. (It is also the first time I have seen someone who played in 33% of their team's sets be named to an academic first team...but she does have the toughest major. There must not be a minimum qualifying number of sets played.)

Perhaps USD will transition more toward a pin hitting game next year. They have much more lethal pin hitters in Frohling, Lukes and Fayad than they have in recent years. They have a history of killing opponents with their fast, and very effective slides for many years. Not sure who is ready to take over that role next year. Jacobsen got up to speed last year when one of the starting MB's (Edwards) was injured for much of the season. That was huge for her to have that experience carried into this season. Turner will be very good, but is still a little raw. I really like Scully for Pepperdine. She made really big contributions to this team, as a 6 rotation OH, and had matches where she put up really high hitting numbers. Pepp's setters will have another year under their belts so accuracy should be improved as sophomores. BYU is a big question mark for me. Who is the next McKenna Miller/RJP/Alexa Gray to lead them? They've had the most dominant OH's in the conference for years. USD may have that now with Lukes, plus Frohling should be a killing machine for the next 3 years at Opp.
