LMU and LBSU played 4 games today at LMU. Set 1 LMU won 33-31, A little bit sloppy, as expected but also some very good play showing what each team may be capable of. Set 2 LMU won 25-17. Set 3 LMU won 25-14. Set 4 LMU won 17-15. Each team played a variety of players and lineups, though LMU seemed to put in more players and mix the lineups up. LBSU relied heavily on Williams who can certainly pound the ball and she played all 6 rotations, her passing is a little sketchy at this early point and LMU seemed to serve to her to avoid Harward, who was solid as usual. Beach middle XUE wasn't a huge factor in the match, got her hands on a few balls and actually had the toughest serve for LMU to control. Swesey distributed the ball pretty well though LMU served tough and did keep the beach out of system. Martinez was inconsistent but put the ball down hard a few times and was pretty athletic out there. Freshman Katie Kennedy had some good moments too and looks to have some good potential. LMU looked solid and seems to have pretty good depth. They served aggressive and though they gave up quite a few points on missed serves they never let up, even when the game was on the line. OH Slattery was pretty effective and played the 1st 3 sets, coming out then staying in in what seemed like the LMU plan with most players. Frosh outside Booth was impressive too along with Freshman middle Walters and libero Schroll (sp?). Megan Rice didn't play, had a strained AB so was rested but only as a precaution. The Beach needs to tighten up their play or they will have some difficulty this season. You can see their potential. I don't see the advantage yet of keeping Williams in at this moment for all 6 rotations unless they at least use her from the back row now and then, which I can't recall happening. LMU looked pretty good for the first scrimmage and for the first time in some memory have good depth on their roster and a bigger block so pretty impressed with their defense too. Spotted Kathryn Plummer's parents in the stands, friends with the amazing Hailey Harward, and a decent sized crowd all made for a good start to the volleyball season. Gotta say, I don't think the uniforms look bad on LMU, as many have commented on this thread, at least the Home ones. Did Teague play? Any insights? Teague looked pretty good. Still has a killer serve, seemed a little out of synch with her hits. Seems like the middle spots will be between Teague, Johnson and Freshman Walters, who impressed the most offensively in my opinion.

This is a step back. I wonder what athletes who played there 10, 20, 30 40 years ago think about all this. Notre Dame never rebranded. Agree on the logo, like the old lion much more, the home uniforms look good in person and the color scheme works well though the whole gym hasn't been transformed yet.

I like the new color scheme a lot more, but I agree that the new lion is not my favorite.

Fantastic info Zazu, thanks for doing this. Some really big matches against quality opponents for most teams. Tough start for St Mary's vs Utah and Cal Poly. LMU vs Southern Conference Champ and favorite to win the conference again this year Samford and then Arizona. Pepperdine against North Texas and of course USD vs Hawaii in what should be a good measure of both teams. Excellent!

The expectations are so high in both the San Dan Diego and Hawaii programs for a successful season. Really looking forward to this game. usdtoreros.com/news/2019/8/26/womens-volleyball-toreros-look-forward.aspx USD's remarkable success in women's volleyball has created a quandary inside Jenny Craig Pavilion. A large banner hangs on one JCP wall, commemorating every year the Toreros advanced to the NCAA Tournament. With San Diego making appearances in 21 of the past 23 seasons, nearly every stitch of the banner is full and that's not counting recognition of last year's stunning run to the Sweet 16. So what to do? Add space to the banner? Create a new one? "I've been asking that since December," said head coach Jennifer Petrie, about to begin her 21st year as the Toreros' head coach. "I don't know." A decision should be made soon because the problem, like Petrie's win total, only figures to mushroom. With four starters returning, a fifth player who started half the time, a talented transfer from Oregon, power up front, depth on the back line, it will be stunning if USD doesn't book its annual NCAA Tournament reservation. "Our expectation, at a minimum," said senior Megan Jacobsen, "is the Sweet 16." Outside hitter Katie Lukes took that goal one round deeper. "The Elite 8," said Lukes. "Our goals are the same," said Petrie. "Win our conference. Go to the tournament. And we want to reach the Elite 8. That's been elusive." San Diego has reached the Sweet 16 four times. The next trip to the Elite 8 will be the program's first. As mentioned, this year's team is deep, particularly with ball strikers on the front row. Junior Roxie Wiblin led the Toreros in kills last season (308) and should be brimming with confidence after making the U.S. Collegiate National Team. Other returning starters up front include Lukes (third on team with 229 kills) and middle blocker Jacobsen. Setters Anna Newsome and Laura Madill both return as well. As for depth, Cami May started 15 of 31 matches on the front line. Middle blocker Lauren Turner redshirted last year as a freshman. As for Turner's skill level, she participated in the U.S. Women's National Team tryout in March. "We didn't want her to spend a season on our bench when we think she's going to be a dominant player in our program," said Petrie. And Thana Fayad is back after compiling 180 kills as a freshman in 2016. Plus, San Diego landed a talented transfer when Camryn Tastad, a libero, left Oregon. Players reported on Aug. 9 with the first practice on the 10th. USD opens the season Aug. 30 at Hawaii. With that much depth, practices are competitive. "Things get pretty fiery and fun," said Jacobsen. "Our vibe has been great," added Lukes. Petrie thinks the key to the team will be how players mesh and ball control. "We've got a lot of fire power," she said. "I think we can play with anyone." Translation: Better get that postseason banner issue resolved. usdtoreros.com/news/2019/8/26/womens-volleyball-toreros-look-forward.aspx

Such a solid conference! I do believe the level of competition will rise in the upper half of the conference this season. BYU, SD, LMU, PEPP etc

Portland tied with Csun 1-1 leading 19-17 in the 3rd Hughes appears to be doing well setting a 5-1 for Portland. And Portland takes the third set to go up 2-1
