Teams are up for this 3* tournament. A LOT (11) of teams going for a 3* for a trip Down Under. -Brunner/Priddy - Burik/ Satterfield-Crabb/Gibb - Frishman/ Field-Hyden/Doherty - Johnson/ Austin-Kolinske/Evans -Patterson/Budinger - Roberts/ Mewhirter-Slick/Allen - Zaun/ CasebeerI'm surprised Crabb/Gibb are going to this one. They are technically the top 2 or 3 USA men's team. Dalcena is no-show, as is Crabb/Bourne. worldtour.2019.fivb.com/en/msyd2019/men/teamsinfo/entriesbycountry

I think Rich said on the Sandcast that Jake and Taylor are still undecided. Originally this was supposed to be a 4 Star.

I haven’t listened to that episode yet but unless they win, it could potentially ruin their points. 1st place is only 600 points at a 3*. They are still carrying a 4th place and 5th place from the last two Majors of last year. I would say they shouldn’t go. It’s just not worth it. Doha is the following week.

That team needs to improve more than they need to preserve points. I think playing often to try to keep the momentum they had at the end of last season is a good idea. Plus if you have medal aspirations and aren't confident you can take down a 3 star? I think an Australia trip is probably attractive to anyone not going to Doha

Kristopher Johnson/Christopher Austin
But 11 teams, I’m sure half of them will drop in the coming weeks.

Austin/Johnson played a Florida tourney over the winter. Johnson had some stint with the national team and is about 6'10ish... pretty raw still, but with that height we all know there is potential for some damage in the distant future.

I think an Australia trip is probably attractive to anyone not going to Doha It seems unlikely to me that Jake/Taylor would ruin their points by playing Sydney. Aren't they still carrying two 17ths and a 25th from 4 Stars last year also? They'd have to place 9th or lower in a Sydney to be worse than a 17th in a 4 Star. But finishing 1st or 2nd in Sydney would be like placing 5th in a 4 Star, which isn't a bad result at all. And it doesn't seem like they're in any danger of dropping into the qualifiers or country quotas. Maybe they're worried that the field in Sydney will be stronger than a typical 3 Star, or maybe Jake is worried about staying healthy over the long season. But I think I'd like to see them playing as much as possible and taking the points wherever they can get them.

There are 10 4 * the rest of this year, and probably another 5 or 6 before points close out next year. With only 2 5 * and the world Champ. this year, that is less than 20 available through the Q process.

Cut that down even further in 2020 when all 12 events need to be played by June 15th to qualify in the top 15. Any injury or setback that causes you to miss a 4* or 5 * along the way could mean that you don't have the right set of events left to qualify for Tokyo. The cancellation of FTL this year and uncertain status for 2020 make some of these 3*s way more important than usual. That said, Jake and Taylor might benefit from getting some of those 12 events under their belt early (before the meat of the FIVB and AVP schedules mid summer).

WTF won’t count as an event right.
