In your opinion is she looking at unrealistic schools and programs? What do you think is keeping her from the scholarship? An honest conversation is best, she may be being told an earful that just isn't true by others. I actually don’t have a specific athlete in mind right now. I write a recruiting blog for high school athletes and I’m looking for different perspectives on how to counsel unsigned seniors. Agreed that an honest conversation is best!

I'm always surprised at who may still have a scholarship for an unsigned senior or transfer that will be an impact player. What I tell my unsigned seniors is if you really want to play and get a scholarship, focus on schools you are MUCH better than their level or one that absolutely needs your position. If you can impact a specific level of school right away, some school in that level will have a scholarship. The student-athlete must be flexible with geographic location however. Also, the JC route can be great option as if you find a good JC to play for locally a family can save a lot of money to put toward the last two years. In addition, many JC-D1 schools seem to be able to pay for about everything as the other poster mentioned for that IMPACT athlete. Remember, your degree doesn't say XXX University via XXX Junior/Community College, it just says the university. :-)

I have a quick question related to the subject. what are the chances a kid can get offers if they only play highschool and not club because club is too expensive? Or is club the way to go? On that same token, are there any top players within the last 10 years or so who did not play club? Even at the D3 level if you have not played club you are too far behind to expect to last 4 years on the roster, much less be successful. There are always exceptions, the best bet being burned out basketball players who are athletic and can learn enough to be middles. To the OP, focus on school, let the volleyball fall out from that. GO, PATS!

Always A+ advice

This year there was a change to the recruiting calendar for NCAA D1 that resulted in 3-4 weeks less recruiting time for D1 coaches. Coaches lost the first week of December, the last week of January and the first two weeks of February to NCAA Quiet Period rules. For this year's unsigned seniors that means that 2/15 is the first time D1 coaches can evaluate players live since November.
I think a few things are occurring as a result. At this point in time, there are likely more unsigned seniors out there than there have been in the past. Also, there are likely fewer offers to unsigned seniors up to this point with coaches not evaluating. Finally, with the recruiting cycle being delayed, where in the past the middle of February was the beginning of big decision making weekends for unsigned seniors, now it's the first evaluation weekend and the decision-making is probably delayed at least 3 weeks or more.
This means that both coaches and unsigned seniors need to be more patient this year and keep working harder at recruiting even as we get deeper into the recruiting year. There's still a lot of recruiting of unsigned seniors that will happen this February, March and April.

My best friend never played club, and chose to end her volleyball career after high school. She missed it, and ended up walking on at Minnesota during her sophomore year. She then transferred to D2 and broke a few school records while on scholarship. So, it's possible to have a college career without playing club. It's not common, but it can be done.

Like a previous poster said, there is more to this process than D1. As a former Juco coach, I would consistently get emails from D1 and D2 coaches looking for players in March and April...things happen on an almost yearly basis, that are out of the colleges' control. I would not depend on that though. In a nutshell, MOST D1's are done by now, but if you are willing to put in the legwork and email work, I guarantee there is a school out there still looking. D2's are not quite as done as D1's, so there are probably more opportunities at the D2 level right now. As far as scholarships go, I agree with previous posters, a full-ride at this point in the calendar is probably at the Juco level. Depending on where, it can be a D1 or D2 level of play (FL, TX, CA, other random schools in various states). If you have already been emailing a ton of schools at all levels, I would look back and see who has been positively been emailing you back and see what they have to offer. There are still schollies out there at all levels

Still lots of opportunities out there. Keep working hard, contact coaches to see where they are in the recruiting process.
DI will have some schollies still (very few), DII will have a few more...should be lots of DIII opportunities.
Check the jobs page. Schools still in the process of hiring a coach may have opportunities is previous coach was not done with recruiting class before leaving.

...should be lots of DIII opportunities. " ...at schools who's application deadline hasn't already passed. www.collegesimply.com/guides/application-deadlines/Some of these schools may be flexible but many of them, especially small schools, are not the least bit flexible. It is late. No question. They should still be looking but the ability to be choosy is fading by the week.
